The recent patch that ports the GCN-only translation to N64 has revealed that, although the English name entry screen doesn't allow entering them, if present Japanese characters are recognized and displayed correctly.

Either by dumping the game's VRAM or decompressing the ROM itself, if compression is used. Otherwise, use an image viewer of sorts to dig in.
