A few weeks ago I came across the YouTube channel of this guy named Herbert Midgely. His channel has about twenty million videos on it, which are kind of try-too-hard-to-be-funnys, but are mostly short, harmless, and inoffensive (see How to Eat a Banana After Getting a Haircut or How to Look at a Carton of Eggs, for example).

At the end of his videos he puts a bumper to watch his movie: Rise of the Robots, which is somehow available on Amazon Prime for free. I had a couple of hours a few weeks ago and I figured I would check it out. I like watching bad movies and amateur stuff sometimes, and can usually find something to like in them. Rise of the Robots, though, was one of the exceptions. It was bad, yeah, but it wasn't even the 'so bad it's good' kind of bad. It was just 'these people don't really know what they're doing and it shows' kind of bad. There were plot holes, bizarre pacing, audio levels were all over the place, and they hit the viewer over the head with the blunt end of the moral message hard enough to detach a retina.

I did manage to make it to the end and through the post credits sequences (there were a few of them), but in hindsight that was a really bad idea, and I don't recommend anyone do the same thing.

Dad and I sat down to watch the new Ghostbusters; tried to give it a fair shot given all of the garbage that surrounded it. We did not finish it, it is actually pretty bad. I kinda hate it when a movie turns out to be bad. Look at Spider Man 3; the actors were having such a good time, only for it to be a pretty awful movie, and the last one before the reboot. It must feel awful.

D-War is such a shit movie. I actually had some hopes for that movie, but it's so messy. You're bouncing from scene to scene and you've no idea where the plot is going. It's going to bad places, mind you.

The Force Awakens. It's one thing to be a bad movie, it's another thing entirely to be a bad movie that constantly references other movies that are better than it. It doesn't make me want to see more Star Wars sequels, it makes me want to go back and watch the old Star Wars movies that were good.

At this point the Star Wars franchise is basically the stereotypical boomer who sits on his sofa and does nothing with his life, all the while reminiscing about how he used to be so much cooler when he was captaining the Varsity Football team back in '78.

man normally i'd just write this off as an intentionally contentious Nuclear Take

then i remember how people reacted to The Last Jedi for actually trying to do anything interesting with its characters/story at all and i'm tempted to agree just to spite dipshit star wars fans

The Room: The Game essentially goes through the whole movie's plot, basically line for line, but with some Easter eggs and deepest lore involving spoons.

For whatever reason, I hate movies that are part of an installment (Digimon Tri OVAs being the exception so far). Lord of the Rings? Gave up some time early in the 2nd. Harry Potter? Only saw the fifth movie and I can't see myself watching more (incidentally, couldn't get through the first three chapters of the first book). Star Wars? Saw the first trilogy, thought it was overhyped and dumb, so I've no desire for more. Transformers? I prefer Egoraptor's take on those.

But the worst movie? Ratings-wise, Caligula counts, but I'm fascinated by said film for how extreme the director went in the name of art.

I'm probably gonna have to go with Ted 2. I know which movies to avoid, so I don't waste my time, but I remember I kept checking my watch wondering when it'd be over. Heard the original Ted was great, so I'm hopeful that if I'll see it I'll like it, but Ted 2 felt unnecessary and kinda mean at some points.

Swiss Army Man at least ends with Daniel Radcliffe's corpse motorboarding off into the sunset with the power of his farts.

Can I just give a special shout-out to the 2003 Cat in the Hat movie with Mike Meyers? I still genuinely can't believe that exists. It just feels like the living embodiment of soulless capitalism took The Cat in the Hat and made a raunchy movie about Mike Meyers being a goofball. Sure, it had some really neat visual design and a couple of funny scenes, but it just feels like it's profiting off of you.

There's that infamous scene where the Cat literally stops the movie to try and sell the viewer on going to the Universal Studios themepark, but there's also the merchandise. There was so much merchandise (video games, board games, plushies, blankets, I once saw a The Cat in the Hat: The Movie: The Book?!) that came out when that movie came out, and they made sure to put on a tacky "official movie merchandise" logo on all of it.

It just feels like they don't care about the source material at all and they're just milking the name for money.

last October i watched the movie Wish Upon and it is among the worst movies i have ever seen. it is hilariously bad stupid horror and the whole thing feels like the plot to a Mike Scully-era Treehouse of Horror

also i didn't really think of it as such at the time but The Imitation Game is pretty fucking stupid -- it's basically 2 hours of neurotypicals romanticizing autism in stupid ways (all autisms think like computer brains, yo usee,) and trying to shoehorn a het romance into a movie about a gay man

special mention to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which is worse than any of the prequels (not joking or trying to be hyperbolic here)

There are two movies that always stick in my head for genuinely being awful.

#1. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Now, I'm sure it isn't a surprise to anyone that I'm saying a film by Michael Bay is bad, because let's face it most of his films are fucking terrible. I think this one really holds a special place in awful movies though, I don't know how he managed to do it, but he made a film about giant robots beating the shit out of each other such a boring slog. This is generally a problem with a lot of his Transformers films but it's ESPECIALLY a problem in this one where I swear over an hour is the unlikable human cast fucking off in a desert somewhere looking for something to revive Optimus Prime or something, I can't remember. I don't think my hate boner for this movie will ever die, especially since I know someone who claims this is like one of the best movies ever made.

#2. Independence Day: Resurgence
I don't actually have a rant for this one, all I can say is I kinda feel bad about it because a friend took me to go watch this movie for my birthday because we all wanted to see it and I passed out for like an hour of the movie because of how incredibly boring and nothing the film was.

Not many bad movies come to mind (especially since I don't really watch movies ), but one I can say was bad was one of those 'straight-to-DVD grandma checkout line' movies, called Santa Stole Our Dog. Despite having Ed Asner in it, it's super-cheap and honestly kind of so-bad-it's-good at points. They even make a half-hearted point about global warming at the end of the movie for no reason. It's so fucking stupid and I kind of love it.
