Unless you're hyper paranoid, you really don't have to run every bit of security software under the sun. Ever since the advent of secure boot, the amount of virus cases I've actually had have dwindled to nothing. Even ransomware cases have pretty much gone to businesses exclusively as targets, usually through Exchange. It's money thrown away anymore.

Most I'll give an individual on a start of their new system, or after a recovery from some scam (most common thing I'll see as compromise anymore), is uBlock Origin in their primary browser. That's it. There is no longer any need for anything else. Browsers are the hardest hit piece of software for a standard user but if you put at least something in like that, you're fine 99.9% of the time unless you commit digital suicide and go somewhere you obviously shouldn't.

I know people say obscurity isn't security... but I dunno man, I'll take being called a moron by Mental Outlaw if it means not having the Management Engine sniffing each indiviual bit of my RAM, even if that does mean doing it at 1420MHz.

Anyway, I don't like KDE all that much. At least not what I've seen of Plasma 5. The only time I've ever used KDE was Plasma 4 and even then I was underwhelmed.

He's definitely not the least abrasive person out there, but if there's one thing he takes seriously, it's privacy and using open source. Less so than rms, but he kinda starts to look like him next to your average person.

I heard someone here before say they didn't like 3:2, but... I dunno, I like it enough that I'm kinda becoming a convert. At least, until I try out 1400x1050.

Also, clicky keys good. My absolute favorite switches are probably Zealio 67g tactiles, but I'm not paying $50 more for them, so I'll just go with MX Blues when I get around to getting a new keyboard.

that might have been me, but i don't dislike 3:2 necessarily, i mostly dislike it in photography, where 3:2 had become a standard because of 35mm film (i generally shoot in 4:3 and use compacts, even when i'm doing commercial photoshoots)

i actually haven't tried 3:2 in depth yet, but i find myself most productive in 4:3. i'm getting a 3:2 (2160x1440) laptop soon, so i'll see how it compares to my experiences with 1400x1050 laptops. i do wish they made 1400x1050 laptops still though...

a bonus to 3:2, though, is you can in theory play Game Boy Advance games full screen without any letterboxing

I hope 3:2 becomes more popular. I'd personally welcome a comeback of 4:3, buuuut... I can take 3:2. I'm often just wasting vertical screen space on my desks. 16:9 is an abomination.

i haven't tried it but i love the idea of 3:2. it's the closest thing to 4:3 since 4:3. i always have every window on my computer sized to roughly this ratio, anyway (as is why every site/layout i code is <1000px) i've grown to find wide screens kinda disorienting... though i imagine 3:2 makes split screen less ideal...

whenever i end up getting a new laptop, i don't want to have a hidpi display though. i like seeing the individual pixels. my opinion used to be the opposite, of course.

I'm liking this high res screen specifically because I can have a bunch of programs on screen at once even with the dock on screen. Could even fit another window up there in that upper right corner. I can respect liking seeing the pixels, but for me, my 14" iBook now just looks a little blurry until I readjust. And hey, it's not all that high of a PPI -- you can still see pixels, they're just smaller. About 114 PPI, to be specificish.
The previous PowerBook G4 models were 1280x854, and before then 1152x768, both at 15.2". And of course, you can always pick a lower res by an integer multiple (e.g. 1128x752 for a 2256x1504 display -- such as Framework's 13.5" [100PPI]) and try to get integer scaling.

I like both and think the diversity and characterization they bring to their respective OSes helps make things more interesting in the long run. It's nice to be on an NT and just have an installer, and it's nice to be on Linux and be able to just xbps-install -y firefox and have it just work out of the gate.

Yeah, that is a huge advantage to wizards. I would love to see some more of that come over to package manager OSes... that would mean adding one more standard onto the pile of package managers there already are though.
Also I suppose not, but I don't know if I'm just in an echo chamber, but I don't usually hear package management as the first and foremost issue people have with non-NT OSes.

i'm still undecided on whether i prefer macos or windows, because while macos has a nice terminal and a simpler interface (and a universal menu bar), the selection of software is worse than both windows and linux, and the context menus in finder are oddly limiting. also setting default apps is weird.

windows however doesn't have a good terminal experience with little package manager support. i use ffmpeg and imagemagick all the time on my mac, but i wouldn't even know where to begin if i were to hop on windows again and try to install those.

well, i guess there's WSL, which is pretty good at that kinda thing

i think package managers are best for command line utilities while i prefer installers for gui applications

Tbf, unless you're using something like Arch that just bundles everything into one massive package, that same level of options is possible with package managers. I do think that it should be more common to provide those options up-front, though. It's non-traditional, but Flatpak is actually pretty good with this, where I can choose to install Steam and be offered addons like Proton-GE or luxtorpeda or whatever.

The install size issue is way overstated. There's an upfront cost but it does a reasonable job sharing dependencies and if you use more than a few of them, the difference is negligible.

I'm pretty firmly in the "flatpak is the future" camp. Appimage is cool too but I don't see it becoming much less niche aside from maybe software preservation purposes.
