retroarch is utter arse and the only time I use it is when I have no other options.

The lead dev is a gigantic arsehole too and is known to harass both emulator authors when they don't make retroarch specific features, and the userbase.

I hate RetroArch and its UI (rgui makes it better but it's still annoying), but as with everyone else, it is convenient and some emulators just don't make themselves available through a UI at all, making it really the only option. Genesis Plus GX and ParaLLEl come to mind.

Also the hostility sometimes shared between RetroArch and other emulator devs is just petty and sad to see.

oh, i know someone like this too. they're a joy to talk to, they go on all sorts of rants about very specific things regarding computing

running qemu-system-ppc is relatively simple, and cheaper than buying an old powerpc mac, albeit slower. i had a lot of fun with the VMs, but when i was briefly using a PowerBook G4 around a year or two ago, it was really surprising to me how, i dunno, not-sluggish it was? and the battery still held up normally. kinda felt like i was just resuming my childhood for a brief moment

full keyboard layouts are by far the best layouts, the numpad is a useful input area to the point where i'd much rather have one then not and i can't ever imagine not having the arrow cluster

i'd agree for windows, but as far as macs go, i think i prefer using the command key instead of page up and page down. it's nice having a proper "super key". otherwise, i never really used the numpad

Depends on if you just want to try the software ecosystem or have the actual experience. For the former, QEMU is probably enough, but for the latter I'd suggest probably looking for a PowerBook G4 or a later iBook G4 and if you like it grabbing a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver or PCIe G5 for the expansion ports and swappable GPU (you can shove an AGP HD 3850 in the G4 and an HD 6970 in the G5 if you're using Linux or a BSD that supports it). There is a project going on right now for an open source hardware laptop using a QoriQ T2080 dual-core 1.8GHz processor, but that's not out of testing yet and the T2080's AltiVec only works in big-endian, where most PPC64 Linux stuff is focused on little-endian so that maintaining a port of x64 software doesn't take as much work. It's not like there's no software for big endian, the difference is only a few percent, but stuff like Firefox you definitely feel it. Big endian Firefox 96 doesn't have a Javascript JIT, where little does.

i was running Mac OS X 10.0-10.4 in qemu recently, it was very slow, but that was also running on my 2012 MacBook Pro, with whatever Apple's hypervisor is(?)

still cool tho

10.0 and 10.1 are just really slow, terrible OSes that nobody likes. It took until 10.2 Jaguar for X to not just be a novelty you played with before going back to 8.6 or 9.1 to do actual work. 10.3 is the fastest of them, but considering you need to to full system emulation, I wouldn't expect it to be especially fast, and 10.4 and 10.5 get all of the new software written for them. On real hardware, 10.4 is comfortable on even pretty slow systems, it's just doable on my 450MHz G4 tower for instance. It definitely helps to have a faster system, though -- my PowerBook G4 at 1.5GHz runs Tiger very smoothly. L3 cache beats clock speed, so something with a 7455 will be faster than a 7447 that's clocked higher. A 7448 can beat it out through sheer cycles per second, getting up to 2.5GHz, but Apple never used them for whatever reason.
I've never really been too happy with emulation, whether emulating a PC or a game console, but I definitely acknowledge it's more of a collector's market these days, even if I kind of rue that fact I'm at least grateful that it gives people a reason to sell their machines rather than gut them and stuff them with Mac minis or just kind of chuck them in the garbage. Sometimes you'll find a decent deal on offerup, like the aforementioned G4/450 that I got for $30, but it's definitely the exception and not the rule, so I really don't blame you, just that you aren't really getting a super true picture if you're emulating a whole computer on a laptop with a different architecture.

It depends on how much else you have open, but it's generally at least usable unless you're on Leopard with a web browser, the GIMP, and YouTube all open as well. There's a client written in Objective-C, Discord Lite, that apparently runs really well but I couldn't log into my account when I tried to use it.
Edit: I just tried it again and it worked. I can say that with a web browser open, it is still pretty quick to use.

i'm in agreement with you here; i think it's a shame that small layouts ever became standard. ok, i understand for small devices of course, or for circumstances where you must be portable, but otherwise i don't understand the point.

people seem to value these smaller keyboards on their desk setups to conserve space. but to what end? i looked up early computer set-ups to see just how they differed from modern ones and although there are indeed some `atrocities' out there, many of them manage to fit a lot into a small space (i.e. they are dense set-ups)

(source: flickr)

(source: applefritter.com, 360.here.com)

in comparison, modern set-ups seem to value empty space. there is something oddly suburban about the way many desks (the likes of which you see on r/battlestations for example) look these days, as if the logic of urban planning has trickled down into our logic of desk arrangement. but what do people even do with that empty space? in theory, you can write, read, play games, etc. on it. but i struggle to be convinced people actually do that or that… even in my set-up, which involved a lot of empty space, i still found myself retreating elsewhere to do anything that doesn't necessitate the desktop computer directly. i hardly ever write by hand, but when i do, it's at my kitchen table. i read in bed, or on a beanbag chair. i play handheld games anywhere i can sit or lie down. taking apart electronics, working with screwdrivers, even all that happens elsewhere. are my habits a relic of these vertically integrated desk-for-computer times? or have we suburbanised our desks and created empty parking lots within our own homes?

i can't imagine a human persistently even having a perfectly clean desk, there's always something going on on mine, as obsessively tidy as i am, whether it be paper, headphones, my microphone and audio interface, or especially if you're the kind of person with a shit ton of audio gear and synthesizers and stuff

that's a really good observation, sofi... it is very suburban, my family always kept every surface empty, everything put away, nothing in an in-between state. no works in progress, everything is finished, everything is perfect

That... makes a lot of sense. I knew I really didn't like the whole germaphobic "clean" thing people had, and this is the best explanation as to why. I always have something on my desk, like cups, books, projects I haven't worked on in two years, my reindeer doll... come to think of it, it kinda feels uncanny, like it's not an actual desk actual people sit at.
I guess it melds in perfectly with my general dislike of whitespace (which is honestly the whole reason I joined jul, the forum software).

cleanliness is interesting because there's always someone that can see me as a neat-freak in the same world that my parents can see me as messy

i'm really organized with my files, i try to keep my home folders and external drives organized, and i really don't like having desktop icons unless they pertain to something i am presently working on. when i'm using windows, i keep the start menu from having too many folders, and i delete url shortcuts and uninstallers that i don't need. it's a bit obsessive but carefully making sure my computer doesn't overwhelm me A. gives me an illusion of control over something in my life B. keeps me from ever filling up my disk space more than halfway (thanks WinDirStat)

i really want to make it clear that i actually have no issue with cleaniness itself; you can have a setup that is both dense and clean. i'd even argue the two `old' setups i shared pictures of are technically clean, just that there's a lot there.

for my own set-up, i admit there's actually very little on my physical desk, and i keep my icons on my desktop to a minimum. i used to outright disable icons on my desktop, but now i keep a few for aesthetic reasons (it simply felt a touch too clean without it).

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
