Although internet access on the go is convenient for example when you're trying to get to a place in an unfamiliar environment.

That's about it. A phone that does calls, texts and internet access via a decent browser is good for me.

Pretty much what my phone is, though, minus some games and specific apps. Nothing related to social networks.

You know you don't have to install any of the bullshit that spams you with notifications and crap, right?

I'm torn on smartphones. I miss the days of my Nokia 3330, where the battery lasted for a fortnight, and I didn't have to worry about having a large plate of glass in my pocket ready to smash at a moment's notice. However, having constant access to a map, translator, wikipedia, etc., is a massive benefit, and I don't have to carry around a separate music player, since smartphones come with just as much storage space. Having "location services", bluetooth, and NFC disabled means the battery lasts several days on standby (currently at 73% after 2 days), and not installing a bunch of social media apps or games means I get pretty much no notifications except texts and emails, all of which I want, and could disable if I didn't.

My Nokia 3330 fell out of a first story window, went through the wash twice, and fell out of my pocket and got stepped/jumped on countless times. Eventually it stopped charging the battery, but because the battery lasted so long, I could just charge it in my sister's old one and swap them out every 2 weeks. They were so convenient, and you could pretty much just forget they existed until you needed them, but I'm constantly worried my smartphone is going to fall out of my pocket and break the screen (my old HTC was dropped countless times too, and only recently finally broke, but I definitely treated it a lot more carefully than any old Nokia).

I don't know where I was going with this. I haven't forumed for a long time and am still waking up. ☕

I bought a Pixel 2 recently after years of using a Nexus 5. The battery lasts three days of use as opposed to twelve hours. It's nuts.

I don't know where all you folks are getting a dozen notifications a second out of. I get a notification for any incoming messages or emails and that's it. I think there's three or four apps I've turned notifications off for altogether because if you get tired of seeing notifications you can just do that unilaterally for an app.

That's probably the worst part for me in the adjustment.

I have greatly enjoyed not needing to charge my phone more than once a fortnight and being okay with the ability to just drop it when I'm having low-spoon days and just klutz everything ever.

Oh, right. Vista.

I really liked Vista. Probably helped that I had a machine that could capably run it, though. (iirc, a lot of its bad rap was manufacturers trying to cram it on underpowered hardware?)

For a while I even had better luck with it than 7.

(also WinME was, from my experiences, pretty damn solid)

okay to be completely clear there were a lot of things i liked about vista and at the time we got it i thought it was beautiful and absolutely loved it. but it ran so slow, i dont know enough about optics i couldnt tell you why this was.. but it just got slower and slower over time and everything kept breaking. and to be fair it was a shared laptop, possibly had some viruses that i wouldnt have known about at the time.

my actual worst experience overall with it was the parental controls center?? it constantly had popups and stuff. my parents actually used these features so maybe this isnt something anyone else had to deal with but i absolutely hated it 9_9 ... at one point my parents set it to log off my account at like 10pm and i had friends who were 'hacker' types help me get around them lmfao. that part was kind of entertaining at least.

The tech community is horrendous, especially programmers (open source). See: Pale Moon developers DMCAing an install script and then making bullshit claims as to why. Plus most of the "tech kiddies" around don't actually remember the simpler times, they don't know the facts and a lot of them are pervs tbh

Trust me I've been in those "tech fan discords". It was a dramafest hell.

I think Vista is better than 7 or 10. Also, I really like Program Manager and just the 3.x GUI in general, and when ReactOS reaches 1.0 I think I might see if I can port it over. If I do, I'll call it Daytona.

Anyway, to get off the topic of Redmond, I think BeOS was probably the best commercially released OS ever made. It may not have been feature complete, but it didn't have the crust most OSes have and was designed with home users in mind first, not dead-souled office pencil-pushers like Windows or stuck-up creative types like Mac OS, and I'd mention Linux but in 2000, Linux was basically just for servers and research labs. I share the same love with BeOS that I do with its spawn, Haiku. Which is why I'm using Haiku right now, besides it being light enough to run on a 90mhz Pentium. Even a purpose-built-to-be-lightweight Linux distro is too heavy for this laptop, but besides XP (which even for me is looking a little long in the tooth), this is as good performance as I've ever gotten out of this laptop.

Anyway, besides that, I think cartridges and magnetic disks were actually a good idea in 1996. CDs were slow, easily damageable, and mostly wasted since the PS1 and Saturn couldn't really even handle games big enough to actually use all 650 megabytes, that all just ended up going to FMV and music. Despite being big on cartridges, I really dislike the Nintendo Switch. It feels so soulless and for a portable is such a downgrade from the clamshell design that manages to be worse at being portable than the original GBA that it recalls, due to its large size and bad battery life. And as a home console... well, it has to be a portable too, so it has to compromise on hardware. I hated the concept back when it was revealed in 2016 and I still don't like it now. Don't get me wrong, being able to play portable games on TV is great, and the Super Game Boy is one of my favorite ways to play my Game Boy games, but the Switch isn't how I'd do that. Too many compromises were made between the generally incompatible goals of portable and home console usage, and now besides mobile gaming (which really isn't that fun, not with all the ads) there isn't a viable portable console on the market for me.

I hate cell phones. Maybe it's because mine is a $51 POS off eBay. I dunno, but I don't enjoy using them and I especially don't enjoy connecting to the internet with them. Mobile internet sucks, but it sucks even more when you can't use a mouse (which is to say, when you're on a phone). Slow, buggy, unresponsive... but I guess I'm verging into popular territory, so I'll move on to discord. I don't like discord. It is designed for someone with a personal space bubble much smaller than mine, and fingers much faster. I'd rather be on forums, which is why I am.

There'll be more but it's 10:58...

i'm glad to see the love for Vista growing because i feel very nostalgic for it lately, but i have just become more ambivalent about Windows 10, mostly because i've watched its flatness grow even worse over time. i reverted to making my install as close to the look of 90s Windows OSes as much as possible.

i see that i trolled this topic a lot in the past, some of which i feel a bit of regret for doing, but i do want to say that i never liked the Game Boy SP. i've always found it to be cumbersome, even though in theory it should be a more ergonomic experience with its clamshell design. in fact, i like almost the entire Game Boy line except that one, which sits at the very bottom. (i also think the original GP is just too big—always preferred the Pocket, personally)

i would love to try Haiku some time, it had always interested me.

It's good, but its driver support is abysmal, so expect something that feels slightly rough around the edges and can at times stutter. On the other hand, it has so many good things to it that it evens out and you can still find yourself falling in love with it. However, I also have yet to use it on half-decent hardware, so there's that to consider, too. YMMV, but I really, really like it and am thinking of switching to it full-time when it hits R1 final.

Linux is terrible, it's just less terrible than the alternatives.

As for the actual maybe-unpopular opinion: command lines are actually really good. They just need to be smarter and easier to use, and better integrated with GUIs. Like, any task I can do by interacting with the GUI, I should be able to easily automate with the CLI.

Yes, they're a power tool and you should never need them, but you should definitely learn how to use them if you do anything moderately complex with a computer.

It's a lot of hacks piled on top of eachother with a very user-unfriendly interface. System updates should not break the web browser or sound.

Varies depending on your distribution and your hardware. But ultimately Linux is a bit like assembling a bunch of mismatched lego pieces, but it's easier to fix than the alternatives, at least for me.

Pick a distribution that's too stable and you'll always be left behind when it comes to updates, which is specially bad if you plan on using Steam's Proton or Wine to play games. Pick a distribution that's too cutting-edge and things break very frequently. Finding the sweet spot between the two is not always easy.

It is now 2021, and I have somewhat changed my stance on Windows 10.

I still enjoy the flexibility of Linux and the feeling of having some control over my machine, but after ending up on a Win10 machine as my daily driver again I've been finding it a lot less infuriating than I used to. (Part of this, I guess, is actually running it on a reasonably specced machine - surprise, more resources make things run better!)

I find 10's start menu more favorable to anything prior, too. A-Z applications list on the left, and I can pin my most frequently used tiles to the right. I'll find I more often use the search function anyway, though, and being able to just slap a quick calculation in there as opposed to firing up the calculator itself is nice.

so, an actual possibly unpopular opinion
Windows 10 is by far the best option available for tablets nowadays. I don't even really know of any decent Android offerings aside from Samsung tablets that aren't just focused on media consumption, and I just don't think I could ever get along with the limitations of iOS. There's definitely some jankiness on Windows tablets compared to Android/iOS, but it's not bad enough to really outweigh the pros of... basically having a full-on touch-usable PC.

totally agree, the whole files, folders metaphor is so good and i wish smartphones used it more as opposed to the current centralised data silos for different apps, tom scott did a better job of explaining it then me here

I think modern Android could be good on tablets (if it weren't so busy trying to wall in the garden). But all I find are obsolete versions, or versions hacked to death by the manufacturer, stuck on awful glitchy hardware that's way too weak for it.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
