Yeah, "eliminated" was poor word choice -- what I really meant was "elminated as a compulsory element of doing these things". My WM has plenty of optional mouse control. Sorry for any confusion there.
it's ok, you're fine; i misinterpreted your post and i jumped to conclusions, and i'm sorry. i'm kind of used to people *genuinely* having the opinion that things they don't like should be eliminated, and i tend to not assume good faith because i'm not used to seeing it in tech circles
for the record, i agree with you. i don't believe *any* kind of input should be compulsory if it can be helped.
because i feel like i need to clarify because my original post was terse and unkind, and because i don't want people feeling like they're not allowed to see good things in windows 10:

for the record, i wasn't trying to say this opinion sucks because i don't like the fact that people like windows 10 more than 7 (i'm actually not sure which i like more on a personal level! there's things i like about 10 and things i like about 7), i was just not fond of the implication that nobody has a legitimate reason to not want to upgrade to Windows 10 (peoples' grievances are valid) and furthermore saying people deserve w/e virus is kind of ridiculous and pointlessly vindictive
i frequently see w/e appeal to novelty bullshit about how people should upgrade to Windows 10 because It's The Future and also generalizing everyone who doesn't like Windows 10 as people who just hate change. i am sorry for the bitterness, and it was unwarranted; it's just a sticking point for me, i see it so, so exhaustingly often, and it frustrates me.
i guess i'll contribute my unpopular tech opinion:
- i don't find the start screen as seen in 8.1 all that bad, really? i mean, i still prefer a menu, but i found that when i used the start screen it didn't really impact my workflow very much (not like i need to multitask anyway when i have the start menu open), and i could fit more icons on the screen, so in some ways it was nicer
