Have recently started watching "Altered Carbon" on Netflix, and I'm wondering who else is (no spoilers, please!)
The general premise is that we (generally) no longer die. Our selves are encoded in a little puck-shaped thingy in our spines, called a "stack" and we can switch bodies ("sleeves") when they are damaged. There is real death -- when a stack is destroyed -- but generally people can, in theory, choose to live forever… if they can afford to pay for the sleeve/cloning services/etc. Of course, this is all not distributed evenly, and not everyone wants to switch sleeves. There are themes of inequality, as well as what happens to the soul. The rich live for hundreds of years and are abusive and exploitative and everything is very ultra-capitalist and nasty. There's all this tech that could benefit humanity, but mostly only the rich have access to it, and they're not interested in helping humanity at all. It's very cyberpunk and very violent and I'm enjoying it so far. ____________________ Tarale.net |
