i kinda stole the idea for this thread from another forum i'm on. woops

anyway, this isn't even necessarily a thread for your favorite games or even games you think are good (there's gonna be a couple games which i think are kinda bad on my list ). i'm talking games that are special to you for whatever reason. maybe because they were formative, or because they're nostalgic, or because they remind you of people or the time you spent playing them with others, or they just give you feelings.

- Super Mario Bros.: SMB was the first game i ever played!!!!!! literally i learned how to play games playing SMB lol. i found the warp pipes on my own when i was like 4 years old and i got genuinely super excited then i went to world 3 because it was snowy and nighttimey and i thought that was cool/pretty

- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past: other than Kirby's Adventure i think this might have been the first game i ever truly really really loved. it's definitely the game that made me a huge Zelda fan and i still adore it as a game. i spent years trying to find some way to play this game again after our SNES broke and when i finally found SNES emulation it was like, amazing and i'm legit nostalgic over ZSNES cuz of it. many many years later i got into speedrunning this game and met a lot of really cool people through it. not everyone i met through ALTTP was great, but the people i did i think will be lifelong friends of mine

- Commander Keen/Jill of the Jungle: Episode IV of Commander Keen, specifically, and only the first Jill game. i dunno, i have a lot of nostalgia/personal attachment to that era of computers/shareware PC games in general. i guess i tie them to the process of discovering computers in general, maybe?

- Kirby's Adventure: i don't really have a specific reason for this one; i guess it was formative to me (one of the first games i ever played) but i don't think that's the only reason i love it so much really. i guess it's just, special/important/personal to me.

- Ragnarok Online: the game frankly kinda sucked but the music's great and nostalgic for me and i had a lot of fun on it with a lot of really close friends of mine back in the day

- Yoshi's Island: sincerely one of the most beautiful games i have ever played

- Pokémon Silver: i actually think this game is like probably not one of the better pokémon gens and i have a million criticisms of it. THAT SAID i was insanely excited for it and it was the first game where i think i was squirming in anticipation waiting for it. and at THAT age i actually really loved it and i still think all the things i loved about it are cool! johto's beautiful, the colors and aesthetic and music are all wonderful

- Rock Band: i don't care about Guitar Hero-like games at all really and i'll never play it again, but it was the last game me and my family really spent a lot of time with together and i'm like really attached to it because of that

- NieR: this is one of my girlfriend's favorite games and it's one of the few she showed me that i ended up loving lol. just a really emotional game even if it's not a great one gameplay-wise

Hm, I'll also try to go with less obvious, less common ones...

Digimon Adventure 02: D-1 Tamers (WSC): First game that came to mind just now. It's the first Digimon game I played, if I remember correctly, way back in 2001 or 2002. Not the first game I ever finished, but certainly the first game I played through to the end in Japanese, just barely being able to read the language and not understanding much of anything beyond loanwords in katakana. Also one of the first games I played a substantial amount of emulated, and afterwards one of the first import games I ever bought. It is just a simple, B-tier-ish RPG, really nothing special even compared to some other games in the franchise, yet I remember it and some related things I did or tried fondly (fan translation, hacking, etc.)

Traps 'n Treasures and P.P. Hammer (Amiga): Some of the first games in general I can recall playing for more than one stage or whatever. I guess these might've been for me, at least to some extend, what the early Mario and Sonic games have been for others in terms of lasting impact and such - and funnily enough, I do remember playing Great Giana Sisters on C64 (aka blatant SMB1 clone), but didn't really take to it. I should revisit these two, and maybe Giana Sisters too, sometime.

...hm, that's about it for the lesser known stuff, I think. I could also write some more about Pokemon (GSC in particular), Zelda: Link's Awakening and Ocarina of Time, etc., but nah, not right now at least.

Common games: Super Mario 64 (first game I ever played, even though I liked the DS version more), Paper Mario, Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie, etc.

Minecraft: So many memories everywhere. It's probably because of its open-ended-ness that I played it for so much. I also watched other people play it for a while with some changes such as modded, custom maps, UHC, etc.

Mario Golf/Tennis (N64): Their menu songs induce instant nostalgia on me. I wasn't good enough to get anywhere, but still.

SimCity 4 (and 3000): Building cities, getting yelled by advisors, not earning enough money to build things. Good times.

Less common games:

Railroad Tycoon 3 (and 2 as well): I was always trying to see how I was gonna achieve the necessary goals while keeping the company profitable, and I always wanted to make renovations to everything as soon as I could. Finding ways to connect cities was always fun. It's probably what helped me learn how to manage money I guess.

Densha de GO! (64/Pro): I like trains, and these games make driving trains possibly as fun as it could be.

Pac-Man 2, The New Adventures: This is a goofy-ass point and click game and it's so annoying to go anywhere, but the amount of crazy things happening and the overall expressiveness of Pac-Man himself make this a very memorable game for me.

And more as well I guess.

Mostly Knytt Stories. But I already detailed that on the 'oddly interesting games' thread. :3c

Honorable mentions go to Tower Unite, Firewatch, Habbo Hotel, DOOM II, Minecraft, Roblox, and Manyland.

Fairly obvious, but Ocarina of Time will always remain one of my favourites; it's what I grew up on, and just starting the game and hearing Epona gallop across Hyrule Field as the opening notes for the title them play never fails to calm me, and make me happy. Aside from that, Unreal Tournament is what got me in to wanting to make games in the first place, so that's very important to me, and Metroid Prime 2 is by far my most favourite game. Pretty much solidified the Metroidvania style as my favourite genre, though I'll lean more to the Metroid than the Castlevania. What I've played of SotN I've enjoyed, but I'll take Metroid over it any day.

okay here we go

- Puzzle Bobble: One of the first games I remember. As in, I saw my father playing this in arcades when I was younger. At some point around 2004/2005 I had the "Bust-a-Move 3DX" game for PC (which is the best in the classic series, but not the original). And when I realized MAME existed, I started playing the original game on there.
fun fact: for a long time, a separate PC in the garage was dedicated to "MAME32 0.97", which meant I had to stay there if I wanted to play it.

- Wario Land: This was part of a bunch of cartridges I were lent to me by a cousin long ago (around the time I was 5, I think). I wasn't particularly good at it, but over the time I managed to beat in its entirety.

- Duck Tales 2 GB: Also part of the same bunch of cartridges, but I didn't really play it as much. And at the time, I didn't manage to beat any level either since I was godawful at video games.

- Sonic Spinball (aka Sega Smash Pack GBA): oh boy. The original game in retrospect is kind of okay given how it was developed. But the GBA version (the very first GBA game I bought) is an horrifically lazy port, especially since they had the actual source code. Screen crunch was inevitable, but the butchered sound or little details like how the normal speed there is faster than the original version's 'Fast' setting are... yeah. It's a why tier port.

- Speedy Eggbert: A lil fun platformer my father bought back in 2004 thinking it was something he would enjoy. For him it wasn't, but I liked this game and so I ended up playing it a lot. I really didn't have many other PC games at the time (huge collection of Flash games aside). I didn't even know a sequel existed until I had internet access.

Did you know they're re-releasing all the old Blupi/"Eggbert" games for free??? And eventually open-sourcing them?!

I love it when old games come back from the dead like this. Really needs to happen more often.

I'm gonna second Commander Keen. I grew up with a PC, and they were one of the first games I set out not just to beat, but to complete entirely. I never did, but oh boy did I have fun trying.

I wasted hours and hours in The Incredible Machine, although I have to admit that I mostly built idiotic things designed to upset the cats because the animations were funny.

I absolutely ADORE Theme Hospital, and I still return to it, again and again, to try to beat it, usually abandoning it a few levels in and then restarting again months later with a new game because I have forgotten all the ideal placements of objects for maximum efficiency. I am thoroughly stoked that there's likely to be a spiritual successor soon.

I will forever have a soft spot for Final Fantasy VII, one of my first console games, and the one that gave me a community online in the Final Fantasy VII Citadel.

I love Metal Gear Solid and to a lesser extent the rest of the series. I just dug that whole spy melodrama in Shadow Moses.

I've been following the BlupiGames account on Twitter and I've set a bookmark to this discussion long ago.

so yes, I'm particularly waiting for the open-sourcing of Speedy Blupi

same and... kinda same? i built some pretty great memories playing Minecraft with friends of mine and i had a ton of fun, but also i don't really miss the game itself at all, and the creator being as big of a douche as he is kinda turned me off of the game in general. i know notch isn't involved anymore, but it really makes me feel like there's a fundamental... ethos? or something? at the heart of minecraft that just makes me kinda wanna avoid the game. it's hard to explain and this isn't really the thread for that anyways

also i just realized another one which is kinda unusual: Donkey Kong Land 3. it was the first game i got on the Game Boy Pocket and it's pretty nostalgic for me cuz of that

right!? probably same for me, haha. i was never all that keen on 100%ing things or even really beating them so much as playing around with them, but Commander Keen really made me care about achieving goals in games for some reason. i dunno, that game just made completing things feel really fun to me.

Okay, actually, don't think I did my post in this thread justice. Let me try ONE MORE TIME:

- Knytt Stories. My favorite platformer ever. One of the few platformers where it's preferable to use a keyboard rather than a mouse (at least, in my opinion). Also, the ability to make your own levels results in people coming out from the woodwork every so often to release levels that I have a grand ol' time playing. I also like the general '4:3 2007' aesthetic it has. It feels like a game that was made in the OS9 days (except it isn't). Please play it, for yours and my sake. Also here's my KS fansite. It's good.
- Firewatch: Good game, alright story, great graphics, not-so-great ending (wasted potential, imo). I'll remember it forever.
- Minecraft: Yeah, I was on the Minecraft hype train back in 2010/2011. (Heck, I remember playing Minecraft Classic before that shut down. Remember that?) Strangely enough I can't really play it for more than a few hours before getting bored (and heck, I never play it singleplayer anymore) nowadays. I wonder why? Anyways I have an entire playlist of old Minecraft videos I used to watch back then. If you're interested.
- Roblox: Guilty pleasure game. I always say that Roblox has peaked after they removed Tickets, but for some reason I can't help but come on every now and again and check out some of the good places (that aren't obbys, adoption places, or tycoons). I also like to fiddle around with RBXLegacy (which is a classic Roblox server emulator).
- Manyland: Underrated 2D virtual world where all the blocks are created by the people within it. I wish it would go open-source, though... (And the web version has a banner ad now. BOO.)
- Hiveswap: It's Homestuck in point-and-click form. What's NOT to love about it!?
- Tower Unite: The official sequel to GMod Tower. I don't play it much, but I still do check its forums to see what the devs have been working on. (Also doesn't have the greatest of communities with the prepubescent meming teenagers and whatnot.)
- Portal 1 + 2: Beat all of Portal 2 in one go when it came out. Make life take the lemons back.

And now, for the games that are less memorable to me, but are still worth mentioning:

- DOOM II: I... honestly mostly like this one only for the copious amounts of ZDoom mods people have cooked up, but I can't help but also appreciate the original game as well.
- Habbo Hotel: Eh, I just only really like the pixel art style. Best one I've ever seen in my life up to this point. Other than that I don't even touch it, thanks to the hard currency. (One of the first games I ever played to have that sort of thing!)
- Blockland: Good game, but the community? Not so much, sadly.
- ZZT and MegaZeux: Two ASCII-based top-down crawler games where you can make your own levels. Did I mention I like games where you can make your own levels?
- Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!!: Underrated cooking simulator that relies on fast reflexes and muscle memory. Good stuff. (I don't play it much cause it stresses me out, though...)

I think it might have been the Easter Eggs that helped with this one. Like, I discovered some stuff that was obviously kind of secret and it was like OMG WHAT ELSE IS THERE and then I just had to try to find everything I could. Whether this was just the little secret areas with lives and things, or the Standard Galactic Alphabet…

I'm really looking forward to one day having a chance to play it. I was very into Homestuck and still love it, I just haven't had much time since the baby arrived.

OH OH

I also like Bust A Groove. It was the first rhythm game I ever played, and at first I didn't get it, and then all of a sudden I GOT IT and it was GREAT and then I pretty much mastered it and yeahhhh good times good times.

BUBSY In: CLAWS ENCOUNTERS of the FURRED KIND

It became cool to shit on this game in the last few years (and it kinda deserves a lot of it), but this was one of my most-played games as a kid, and probably the one I became best at.

Besides that, I played a ton of Super Mario All-Stars (1/2/3/lost levels), and A Link to the Past.

I had slippers with Mario on them, and would run to put them on for good luck, and watch my dad play, since he was so much better than me.

ALTTP is still probably my all-time favourite game, even though I don't think I ever managed to beat it as a kid. I loved having a world to just explore, and I was genuinely scared of the soldiers, since I was like 5, which just heightened the experience.

Pokémon Red - Again, a massive world to explore, and tons of things to discover.

Age of Empires 1/2, Red Alert 2, Theme Hospital, Sim City 3000 - These are the 4 PC games I had as a kid. My computer could only hold one of them at a time, so I'd rotate through them and play each for a few weeks. They're all solid games, but they were just in the right place at the right time in my life that I'll never not feel intense nostalgia for them (also, bottom of the shelf in blockbuster in a 3-for-2 sale for the latter 3 was a pretty right place/right time thing too :P).

Catz/Dogz - You could have virtual kitties and pups sitting on your desktop for you to play with! I forgot about these until right now, but I loved these as a kid. :O

GoldenEye - I absolutely loved watching James Bond films as a kid, so when we got an N64 and this game, there was no way I wasn't going to play the everliving shit out of it (or rather, watch dad do so, for a while at least). My cousin later lent me a cheat book for it that they got with some magazine, which let me play a lot more of the game than I would've otherwise managed. I miss cheatcodes.

Quake 3 - The demo was this was on the computers at school, so we'd play it occasionally at lunch, or before the holidays, and I was a fucking god compared to everyone else there. I mostly play FPS games now, but thanks to this game, if a game has a rocket launcher, I will play little else.

Ecco the Dolphin - Just a fantastic game, with a solid sequel, and the soundtrack is amazing. Annoyingly there doesn't seem to be a good Sega Mega Drive emulator that works on Linux? I tried playing it recently and could not for the life of me get it to run (although I do have it on Steam, so maybe I could've tried that in Wine).

Mirror's Edge - I don't tend to replay games, and really don't care about achievements, but I've played through the story like a dozen times, and I'm pretty sure I've gotten every achievement it has. The gameplay is fast-paced, the soundtrack is phenomenal, the setting is the kind of thing that I love, and I identified with the main character more than almost any other at the time (hmm, I wonder why... 🤔). Don't get me wrong, the game has a ton of flaws, but I will love it forever.

Yume Nikki - It hit the exploration and mystery buttons that Zelda had given me as a kid. I'm not sure what else to say about it.

Lone Survivor - Ditto. It's just a fantastic game.

Minecraft - Again, hit those exploration buttons. That kind of died as soon as I had to look at the wiki, but up until then, it was a wide, unknown, expanse, full of opportunities. I also met most of my current friends through it, in various ways - MCBans, Avo forum, mod IRC channels. I don't really give a shit about the game itself anymore, but it'll always be what introduced me to so many people.

Oops, this post became a lot longer than I meant it to. I feel like there's something else I'm missing, but now I'm just feeling ridiculous amounts of nostalgia, so I'll stop before I just start gushing about every game I've ever played.

I'll just get these games out of the way, since honestly, what even needs to be said about them?
Super Mario Bros. 3
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Pokémon Red
(i never owned an snes as a kid)

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link: Okay, so yeah, this game does have a few problems, but I respect it for doing something different. I would actually love to see another Zelda game in the same vein as this (cd-i games don't count).

ZZT: ASCII DOS game I grew up with, with its actually pretty robust language (ZZT-OOP). You could actually make genres with it (even platformers). Thing is, though, most of the ZZT worlds I've played as a kid were part of the ZZT community that was prevalent at the time, so a lot of them had many inside jokes nobody outside of the community would ever get. Playing it again these days, I find myself playing the original four worlds (Town, City, Dungeons, and Caves) more often, despite them being primitive compared to others.

Zelda Classic: I have fond memories of this, mostly because I met some really cool people through it. I still dabble in this from time to time. I just wish I were more motivated to actually, well, make something with it.

Final Fantasy: I am, in fact, talking about the very first one on the NES. While, I admit, 8-bit Theater might've played a factor in my 13-year-old me's interest in this mound of bugs and oversights, it has some replay value to me. I've actually considered doing a solo run a few times.

Sonic the Hedgehog CD. Came preinstalled on an HP Pavillion PC with a Pentium 166 from 1996. I wasn't very good at it, with the bosses being the main gatekeeper for me, so the game truly felt like an adventure with each new zone feeling like a whole new chapter. It was very fun to explore, and the dreamlike aesthetics (especially in the Future variants of levels) influence my work to this day.

Diablo II and Pokémon (first two gens from others/magazines and finally Emerald on my own) was what got me into gaming. Yoshi's Island for nice memories with a schoolmate and a great great game. Mario Kart/Bomberman DS for most hours spent over like 8 years playing it on and off at our crew meetups. MineCraft for my only major online experience, freedom and creativity at a special time in my life. Mata Nui Online Game for being much more charming and artistically well done than a advertisement flash game had any reason to be, walking simulator prototype right there.

Link's Awakening for being a big metaphor of some of my life and being such a deeply philosophical game whilst being a pretty hidden gem.

Here are a few from when I was a kid, roughly in chronological order. In writing this list, I realized that they are mostly special to me for experiences I had associated with the game rather than the game itself.
  • A Link to the Past - This is probably the first game I ever played. The sense of having a big huge world to explore was amazing. One of my oldest memories is my older brother and I sitting in a sandbox pretending that it was the Dark World while building some of the locations in the game.

  • Cosmic Osmo and the Worlds Beyond the Mackerel - This is one of the first computer games I ever played. My family only had a Mac growing up, so my options were much more limited. It's an aimless point-and-click adventure game, but there's an awful lot of things to see and do. I remember it as being one of the few games I played with my parents.

  • Marathon - My older brother got a demo of this game onto our family computer somehow. Our parents didn't want us playing violent video games, so he hid it in a secret folder, and we would only play it when our parents weren't looking. You could play the game with two players, and you got to pick your color. He would shoot at me if I picked his favorite color, though. I didn't play the game proper until many years later.

  • Ocarina of Time - This was the first fully 3D game I played, and the wonder at the sense of exploration was back again. I spent a very long time running around and exploring the starting area, and I remember being too scared to fight the Business Scrub I found in the lost woods.

  • Pokemon Blue - I was caught up in the Pokemon craze when it first began. I played the card game, I watched the cartoon, I collected those recalled Burger King toys, and, of course, I played the game too. Hearing about glitches and rumors about secret Pokemon was one of my first encounters with the internet.

  • Mario Tennis (GBC) - This is the first game I remember playing where you could pick your character's gender, and I happened to pick female. I remember playing this game on the dim GBC screen during long trips. My neighbor and I would play in my back yard pretending to be characters from the game.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
