A curved ultrawide 4k monitor.

Also a more powerful GPU.

Also a more powerful CPU.

Also more RAM.

Also multiple, bigger hard drives and SSDs.

Also a nicer case.

Also a nicer mechanical keyboard.

Also a proper computer desk.

Also a proper office chair.

Also a bigger room in which to put it.

In the short term (until the end of the year), I should probably buy a new motherboard (LGA 775 - DDR3) because this one has been showing random signs of malfunctioning for at least 5 years now, the first of which is that graphics cards which have a lot of VRAM tend to crash frequently, but also the audio & mic ports are a bit screwy at times.

Then I'd probably buy a keyboard. This one is still working fine, but the print on the keys has been vanishing so I think it's time to replace it (the A for example has completely disappeared and now it's just an empty key). And then one more SSD, this time for Linux. Been looking at either SanDisk or Kingston SSDs for this time (recommendations are welcome).

In the long/medium term (by the end of 2020):
- A proper computer/office chair
- A Full HD Monitor w/ DVI or DisplayPort or HDMI (recommendations are welcome)
- A "full" upgrade to this machine, which means LGA 1151 (preferably mini-ITX) + 6th/7th gen Intel + DDR4. This will cost about $550 (R$ 2000).

Patience is key.

I'd really like to fiddle around with a Pi for a while now. It'd be cool to have a dedicated something so I can watch my digital video collection on my TV.

Though I've been itching for a New 3DS for longer.

And wanting to replace the SSD on my laptop for a 2TB so I actually have room to both have Windows and my programs in one place and have the 1TB as a backup (possibly RAIDed to a partition?)

And pimp out my RAM to 32GB.

Right now, though, I'm genuinely trying to save some money, so I've been pushing the upgrades further and further down the road.

I'd really like to get a new laptop within the next few months, something under $600 preferably

I'm not too picky about specs, but hopefully I'd like to get something that's half-decent, though really I'm just looking for something to replace my crappy aging Chromebook TuT

i just caught this, but i'm really flattered to hear it. this comes to me as a great compliment. i put a lot of effort into the layout and aesthetic of my posts because the way Jul works allows me to experiment. i'm not japanese either, but i am this asian woman obsessed with interior design posting from a 50 m² flat in Central Europe. i've been moving out of the Japanese business chic aesthetic lately, i've been craving something more cozy.

on topic, i keep wanting to expand my SSD too. it seems like lately i've been obsessed with having enough disk space. will i get it though? i'm not so sure. 1TB does sound nice...

Bleeeeehhhhhhhhh 3 of my motherboards failed a few months ago so I need to buy new ones....

I also want to eventually upgrade/repair all of my desktops and laptops to "full power" (which isn't much considering all of my computers are from <2009)

Oh jeez I sure hope this isn't too late, but trust me, you do not want a Dell U series monitor. They have terrible color quality (Fine for office drones, terrible for anyone else), and are notoriously bad with sleep mode. Just search for u2415 sleep mode. It's insane that these monitors passed quality control.

I work at a company that bought over 50 of these, and they've been nothing but trouble. Trust me on this, don't buy one.

If you don't mind the washed out colors, get a P2415, same monitor, much cheaper price, and doesn't suffer the sleep mode problem.

I needed a new PSU cause my current one is kinda failing. I also picked up a new gamepad for my computer, since my off brand 360 one broke a while back. This one was a bit expensive, but the company making them has a good reputation and everyone I have talked to like their shit, so...

It also has some good pros:
1. Works on the nintendo Switch too. (Big appeal for me, tbh)
2. Cheaper than a pro controller for the switch.
3. Comes with software so you can customize everything from inputs to the deadzones of the sticks.

The 50% width/height on that image is really screwing things up for some reason. Might be worth it to set a defined size for it.

Anyway...

I just got a new computer chair! It was a bit expensive, but it is pretty comfy! It's a bit hard to get in it though, mostly due to the lack of space around here. I pratically have to turn the chair 45º (which is as far as it'll go) then move my legs out from beneath the computer table and into the living room and THEN I can get out (same thing for getting in it).

Everything else is still on the to-acquire list. Again, patience is key. Oh I guess I also have a new keyboard now, that was also on my list. The new temporary LGA 775 motherboard on the other hand, I ended up not bothering with it. Better for me to just wait until I can do the full upgrade.

New things to add to the list:
- Ink cartridges for this printer (not in a hurry right now).
- A proper gamepad that isn't a bootleg clone of a PS2 controller. This one isn't recognized by Sonic Mania or Puyo Puyo Tetris.
- A laptop. I just need it for work/college, so all it needs to be able to do is browse the internet and do other basic stuff. A cheap one would do just fine.
- A Nintendo Switch. This might have to wait until 2021.

I recently got two capture cards from Digitnow! I accidentally though one was an adapter for the other, but as it turns out they were two separate capture cards, which actually saved my bacon somewhat because the one I wanted to use needed an HDMI output to a TV, which I don't have at my parent's place, but the other card worked... adequately enough. I sort of had to fiddle around with the settings and post-processing via After Effects to resync the audio to video, as well as be absolutely gentle with it or risk the USB plug to disconnect and stop recording.

I brought back the other one home since I do have an HDMI TV, but now I have to get an extra HDMI cable and a splitter if I want to hopefully, maybe, start doing some streaming of video games on weekends.

I may need to rethink the whole cabling situation I currently have though. It's a tangled mess and it interferes with how well the card can pick up input. X_X

I bought (and installed) the upgrade to my computer!

Aquamarine (old)
- GIGABYTE MicroATX Socket 757 Motherboard
- Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400
- 8GB RAM DDR3 (4GB x2)

Aquamarine 2.0
- GIGABYTE Mini-ITX Socket 1151 Motherboard
- Intel Core i5 6600
- 8GB RAM DDR4 (8GB x1)

Things that I didn't change:
- nVidia GeForce 750 Ti
- 240GB SSD WD Green + 1TB HDD WD Blue
- EVGA 500B PSU
- The case

Still testing and benchmarking everything, but it's nice to be able to use melonDS without the CPU even sweating about it. The thing I'm most excited about is that, everything worked first try! I seriously expected the computer to start beeping on me.

Meanwhile, as far as everything else I talked about earlier:
- My current monitor is 1600x900, 20" and VGA-only. I have to use a DVI-to-VGA adapter for it, and even then, not all DVI ports support these adapters. It's definitely lagging behind the rest of my computer, and it's the next thing I'll have to upgrade. I still more than welcome any recommendations for any modern monitors (DVI, DisplayPort or HDMI).
- Ink cartridges are doing fine, no need for me to buy more. HP is just being HP (as usual).
- A proper gamepad would still be nice. I managed to get it working on both Sonic Mania and Puyo Puyo Tetris, but it still sucks to use. Trying to play HUE was painful because the analog stick is a bit finicky sometimes.
- The people at work insisted that I shouldn't spend money on a laptop right now and that I could just use one of the ones from work if I ever needed to, so I guess for now that's already resolved.
- I would definitely want a Nintendo Switch, but I'll definitely not be able to buy it this year.

I think that's about it?

I'm pretty happy with my current monitor, which is a Sceptre E248W. 24”, 1920×1080, has VGA/DVI/HDMI inputs.

If I had more desk space, I'd love to get a mechanical keyboard. I used to have a sweet IBM Model M2, but that died of capacitor plague a while back. Not sure if I want another buckling spring or something else. I might order one of those switch sampler boards just to see. ...and to have a cool fidget toy.

Keychron makes one I want in a squished full-size layout; they also make tenkeyless boards if that's your thing. The former comes with your choice of brown (tactile) Gateron switches, red (linear) switches, or optical red switches.

Julbench3.1  94% full, 55K free, 824K in use
A few bits and pieces for two retro PCs I put together; one a 300 MHz AMD K6-2 for DOS and Windows 98, the other a 3 GHz Core 2 Duo for Windows XP.

- a Radeon HD 6xxx series graphics card for the C2D; the current HD4670 is decent, but it's a passively-cooled card that can get pretty hot, and still doesn't allow me to max out the settings on certain games

- a PCI graphics card for the K6-2 that's better than the S3 Virge DX it currently has, and that still has decent compatibility with weird DOS video modes and such; something like a Riva TNT2 should fit the bill, assuming I can find one

- another ISA sound card for the K6-2; the current card is just borrowed from another system (pure MS-DOS 6.22 Pentium 100), and it's gotta be ISA because this mainboard is finicky when it comes to PCI sound cards and DOS support

Some other "neat to have/try, but not important" things would be a compatible Xeon CPU to replace the Core 2 Duo, just for the hell of it, as well as a newer sound card than the SB Live 5.1 for said machine, an original SB Audigy or something...

I kind of misinterpreted the topic at first as "technology you want to see exist," so I'm going to do that still on top of real stuff and something that's in the process of becoming real.

So, real stuff first: a Commodore 128D with monitor, JiffyDOS, and 1581. However, an Amiga 4000 in the setup shown on the Wikipedia page would be cool too.

I still have to Americanize my N64, which is to say rebadge it, get a US power supply, and maybe one day if they make replacement shells get a new bottom piece and see if I can have a sticker that reads Ultra 64 printed.

I guess also getting some speakers for my DOS machine would be good too.

Also, TI-84s seem fun to mess around with, maybe one of those?

Non-real stuff:

A half-decent portable console released since 2012.

A 3:2 or 16:10 CRT monitor that is brand new.

A SID chip reimplementation that is indistinguishable from an actual SID chip, along with more Innovation card clones.

A tea kettle that makes tea that tastes like the store bought stuff. Though that might just be my own incompetence.

A programming language with decent syntax and easy to understand grammar, but it defaults to being a procedural language rather than object-oriented.

The thing that is in the process of becoming real:

A 64DD clone that is priced at, at most, $400. I really want to see people make games for 64DD, the N64brew game jam went swimmingly, just about matching all of the Ultra 64 games released throughout the 2010s just in 2020 alone.

i really want a PCMCIA sound card so i can listen to higher quality music out my tiny Panasonic Let's Note laptop without using up a USB port

(so to clarify: i actually ended up getting the laptop from the OP, but sold it for a glossy black Fujitsu from 2012, and also traded my other Panasonic netbook for an even older 10.1" 4:3 one, which i use almost as my main mobile computer now - the added height to the screen makes all the difference in the world for me, however the built-in sound card isn't so great)

i really want one of those really old tiny elecom gamepads from the 2000s, like one of these:

sue me i love my 2000s design objects

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
