if you know me, you know my weakness is Japanese business chic. that’s why i’m drawn to the Panasonic Let’s Note CF-SV7, a 12" 1920×1200 laptop by Panasonic designed with the businessfolks in mind. the circular touchpad is a nice touch—a throwback to the Panasonic toughbooks known for their distinct trackpads. i currently own the Panasonic Let’s Note CF-RZ5, which i enjoy but it’s netbook-sized. when it comes to notebooks, i’m starting to realize there is a such thing as too small.



includes an optical drive for those fascinated w/ antediluvian media.



no touch screen. new research suggests that touching your screen gives you cooties, tbh.



if USB 3.0 isn’t enough, it’s got USB 3.1 as well.



perfect for computing in Tokyo traffic. or carrying next to your hip as you stride around in your office.

but, wait. i’d be lying if i said i weren’t into Chuwi’s Hi8 Pro, a sweet tablet for $75.



Chinese products have started to catch my eye. Xiaomi 小米 looks like it could be fun, someday, maybe if it ever drops the pseudo-Apple look and moves towards crafting its own identity.

anyway, we’re all technology lovers here. so what do you have your sights set on, gang? it’s okay to marvel—i probably won’t have money to buy any of these any time soon, either.

Let's have a good time together!
This laptop looks surprisingly late 2000's to mee. But I somehow like it.

Something I would like to have, because it looks so freaking cool but it has absolutly no use for me. Would be the Surface Studio by Microsoft.

Not only is it expensive, for my needs it's too underpowered and don't really know how I would use it's unique featres in daily use.

I'm also looking at those Surface Laptops and Books, but for me, they are all to big. Using a Surface Pro 2 since July '14 for my protable computing needs, and except for mid and highend gaming, I don't see a need to upgrade anytime soon.

Would this thread also be compatible with tech we want, even if said tech isn't new?

that’s what i like about it! 16:10 aspect ratio, which was really prominent in the late 2000s.

That is an excellent laptop design, 12" is a very good size for a laptop IMO.

As for me, I've been on a retro-computer bent as of late and am thinking about getting an MSX machine... there's just so many options and models that it's a bit intimidating.

yeah, i used to think i could go smaller than 12" but i think 12" is the limit for sure now. i’ve learned my lesson.

what MSX machines have you been looking at?

"Old"/new tech I want to buy: the Ultimate 64, an FPGA-based C64 mainboard with HDMI out, USB disk/tape/cartridge emulation, dual SID emulation (plus sockets for real ones), etc.

Unfortunately you're supposed to provide your own case, but I know at least a couple of companies that sell new C64C cases (aka the flat ones), so it's all good.

Ever since that video was released I've wanted it too!!

On another note I've thought about getting a PC-8801 again, they're just so expensive, and all the good ones are on Yahoo Auctions, which of course requires me to find a decent proxy for it.

There's a whole bunch of other computers I would want, but I think I'm going to go after the PC-8801 first.

I've kinda wanted to get a Leap motion sensor, even if it's mostly an expensive toy. It's a little thing that supposedly tracks your hands and you can interact with some bits of software with it. It's a bit hard to justify, especially for 70€. They seem to be going all-out on VR now (It can be used without) and I'm not interested in that. Otherwise I don't know of much software going for it outside of what came out of a game jam specifically for the Leap.

Also the site just made a noise at me for a newsletter signup thing, so I'm angry with that now.

I want one of the modern Amiga 500 accelerators, tho I'm not quite sure which one...

- The ACA500plus is really easy to use, has all sorts of stuff on-board - 8 MB Fast RAM, Kickstart ROMs and Workbench disk images, etc. - but it's only a 68000 CPU (tho it can be [over]clocked pretty high), it's external and doesn't come with a case, and it's currently not available.

- The Wicher 500i (Ex) is internal, which I'd prefer, has a 72-pin SIMM socket for up to 8 MB Fast RAM, but is also just for 68000/010 CPUs, plus depending on what shop you're looking at, it might not even come with a CPU or RAM.

- The TerribleFire TF530 is also internal, is intended for 68030 CPUs and supports FPUs, and can be pretty quick, however it's an open source design that's not being mass-produced, I've only found one place that does sell complete cards so far, and that particular one only has 2 MB Fast RAM, while the design supports 4 MB RAM in theory, but apparently no-one's been able to source RAM chips that would allow 4 MB?

All of them have some sort of mass storage capabilities - ACA has 2 CF card slots (one for native Amiga use, one for data exchange with other systems), the other two have IDE connectors for HDDs or CF-to-IDE adapters, and presumably CD-ROM drives and the like. All of them cost between 130 and 160E(*) each.

I know there's also FPGA-based accelerators, mainly the Vampire, but I'm honestly not a fan of those. They're great technical achievements and surely cool as stand-alone devices (Minimig etc.), but in my opinion, as an "accelerator", especially something as expansive as the Vampire (CPU, GPU) degrades the Amiga itself to some sort of dumb I/O slave, which doesn't really make sense to me...

i am a huge fan of Zojirushi rice cooker and currently own a 0.5L rice cooker from them that i found at a thrift store.

however, i just learned that another rice cooker of this size not only cooks rice but also bakes cakes. specifically, the Zojirushi NS-VGC05 (pictured below).



Zojirushi demonstrated the ability of this cake-making process in this strangely soothing and retro video, below. sounds good, i’d love to bake a pretty cake sometime.



i mean, ok, there’s another rice cooker this small that cooks rice, bakes cakes and also steams vegetables (the one i own as well as the one mentioned above does not have a steam rack). Seems like this bad boy is Hong Kong market, only, sadly.



one day, i’ll have this multitasker rice cooker.

Real quick, I just want to say I love that layout



• A rice cooker
• An instant pot
• An SGI Octane or similar
• A Power Mac G4 MDD
• A Power Mac G5
• An iMac Pro, ideally fully tricked out
• A computer store near my house had a Mac II in the window that always caught my eye, even though I have no particular use or nostalgia for 68k Macs
• A Sega Saturn, plus either a Rhea/Phoebe or (when that comes out) a Satisfier
• A GD-EMU
• A multimeter
• A 1080 Ti, or a 1070, or even a 1060
• Also, a Kaby Lake i5 or i7
• And more RAM wouldn't hurt, either

I'd really like a "New Nintendo 2DS XL", since I've finally got enough games on my wishlist that it feels worth buying a console for them.

I'd love a Game Boy Camera, to try hooking it up as a webcam or something, and maybe a Game Boy Printer to go with it. I regret not buying a Game Boy Light while I was in Japan - everything was so cheap!

I also want one of these cute little things:

GPD Pocket, a tiny laptop computer

It wouldn't get much use, but it'd be neat to have as a little travel thing, or for wardriving, etc. (and omg, did I mention how cute it is?!).

Copious amounts of GPU horsepower for machine learning stuff would be cool, and more cores for our build cluster would be a nice quality of life upgrade, but those are pretty boring answers.

Although, yeah, realistically: a washing machine and tumble drier, and probably a new hoover, then replacements for some broken PC components. :/

nothing too exciting, just a decent/reasonable computer that can actually do stuff and isn't constantly lagging would be a huge plus

i'd like a phone, at all. right now i don't have one, mine broke (it was a galaxy siii tho so i'd have wanted a new phone anyway prolly)

i really want a game boy color for some reason, hopefully modded with some kind of light but i haven't looked into that stuff yet really. the original GBA is really cool too, i really like its aesthetics (if it had a backlight, the GBA micro's screen quality and had rechargeable batteries it'd be the best GBA, imo -- that'd be the best combination of ergonomics/screen/features)... my roommate literally made her girlfriend a backlight modded GBA for her birthday and it's super nice and i'm sooo jealous

there's a lotta flashcarts (everdrives) i want. an sd2snes would be nice. aesthetically i'd also prefer the super famicom to the super nintendo but modded U.S. SNES is way more practical

also i think the famicom's design is super super super cool and i'd like one of my own but yeah, that'd be super impractical too

oh and a new 3DS of some kind (actually prefer the standard kind to the XL by miles, i had a standard New 3DS with the Super Famicom buttons and that was really really cool, but it just kinda died). i'd really like to have the kind i used to have (or at least get it working again) but a New 2DS XL would be nice
