I never thought about that. I figured that applied to Jul, but I never thought about that when applied to Kafuka or Kuriboh64. Dang...

Holy fuck, I forgot about syndromes.

It's nice to see this place more active. I'll try and marginally contribute to that.

Also, my post radar:
You are 5363 behind Lyskar (12211), 3204 behind Colin (10052), 2837 behind DigitalBasic (9685), 358 ahead of Tiden (6490), and 619 ahead of Eppy37 (6229)

It was originally just people who were closest to me in post-count. I guess it's a relic from... Shit, 2013?

i've actually been trying to get my friends to post here, including my girlfriend, but most of them are just like "oh i hate forums" or "i don't really do forums anymore", which i feel like is really unfortunate...

i didn't really appreciate how active this place was until i looked at General Chat and saw that the first page only goes back to about a week ago. the only other forum i've really been a frequent poster on that's still alive has posts from several months ago in its most active forums

To be fair, until about two weeks ago it had threads going back months.

"oh i hate forums" or "i don't really do forums anymore"

This is kind of ... sad, in a way. Especially if they're using the other main social sites. I mean, not entirely unexpected, but still...

Yeah I hear similar attitudes. "I don't know what I'd do on a forum."

I find that Acmlm style boards (layouts, ranks, syndromes, bio, etc) are far more interesting than most forums out there. Despite forums like these being way before my time (I wasn't even seven years old when the 3rd gen Acmlm died), I think it's definitely a lost art and I'd love to see boards like these get more activity. But alas, people have moved on to other things.

My problem until a little while ago was that I felt most of the stuff I come up with would be below the bar of a "proper" forum. I feel like there has been a lower bar here in earlier years, but I can't say for certain and I don't know for other forums. (as I understand some people have been here since they were teens, and were not necessarily the most mature back then)

Some people could do with using a forum or at least a blog. I don't think I've ever found it pleasant to have to scroll though 30+ tweets, let alone 100+. All the text is bunched into maybe a third of the screen, and Twitter at least managed to make viewing a thread like walking a tightrope for clicking. At some point the person making the thread starts repeating themselves as well (admitting they're doing so) because they're bringing up stuff from several screens of scrolling and a couple of "view more" prompts ago. I'm not sure how many more of those I'm willing to sift through.

Glad to see the place liven up a little since I chose it as sort of an internet home.

Forums are for longform discussion (or at least more nuanced shitposting). In this day and age, when's the last time you had more than a few minutes to crap out a tweet or a status on Facebook? We've become really conditioned towards that quick feedback loop, and having new information constantly shoved in our faces, that having to actually seek it out and think about it starts to feel alien.

I am suddenly thinking of how this resembles Wall·E, the Pixar film, where the people on the ship get completely complacent in having everything done for them that they forget how to do things themselves. Hmm...

The stricter rules were definitely a thing, and something that in the last several years we've very strongly relaxed, as long as you're contributing to a discussion (and not being an asshole). Even then more than a handful of my posts are basically just shitposts in forum form

This plus the "last read" feature just make things easy. My go-to comparison is probably the commissions thread I have in the other forum. To find the newest thing, just look for when it's got something new and jump to the most recent posts.

If you wanted to do the same with, say, Twitter, have fun scrolling through literally thousands of unrelated messages, only to find one orphaned tweet. Then you have to go digging even further back to find the rest.

It's the organization, threading, and marking that makes it work.

I remember this got me a bit confused on my first few posts in here. Like, the place was already becoming less strict I think, but it still seemed like the strict rules were in place for some reason. Though to be honest that could just be because I was dumb.

I appreciate the more relaxed feel to Jul, I think it fits the forum better, specially nowadays. I'm happy to look at the stats page and see the average posts per day be around 50-150, when before most days had below 10 posts, save for a few posting sprees.

The rules have changed over time, mostly in response to problems. For a while, there was a sect of the old community (< 10y ago) that was into channer culture, and the increasing strictness dealt with that decently, though not optimally.

Over time as the community has shrunk down to a smaller, closer-knit community, those sorts of issues go away, and we're mostly able to relax with spot-cleaning in the event we get a bad person.

Well, forums were I have grown up posting all the time, even if it was me being 12 years old, or even 19, like right now.

Everywhere I've seen a hacking community, I've always seen a Discord. People find Discord better than forums mostly because you can just ping somebody and ask them something rather than posting and waiting for them to post back.

But on the bad side, you get a lot of idiots who have no idea how to do anything productive and shitpost all day. Seems like the norm on Discord.

The other thing is that in Discord you constantly have to re-ask questions because there's no way to permanently have a good resource for shit.

God, tell me about it. I had to deal with someone for an entire hour just after I woke up today because I muted them on my server for being annoying. Just quit being annoying. That's all I'm asking you to do is apparently too much for some people to comprehend, let alone accept.

Being able to communicate quicker with people is nice, but it is extremely tiring. Only reason I really use twitter is for art, like Pixiv. Forums tend to make conversation far smoother and more thoughtful than IM, like drinking cream rather than milk. (With that analogy, Twitter would be like drinking thumbtacks.)

That's basically why my posts here are so damn short, honestly. It's sad that I really don't have time to sit down and make something anymore. But I don't necessarily think that's only due to it being 2018, my life in general has gotten really busy.
