With a bit of dedication and sillyness and a lot of luck, I feel like I could reach Reinfors 1. But doing that and keeping post quality reasonable, I'm not sure.

I'm fairly positive it's just mentioning it. The persistent JCS was "officially" (IIRC) killed a long time ago.

these JCS-like threads have sort of appeared occasionally during periods of high forum activity though

JCS was a thread that grabbed the rankings from the JCS page, added them up as the month went, and then people discussed about it and various other things in the JCS thread

it was killed because, IIRC, it encouraged too many bad posts

all the old JCS threads from when it was restarted in 2009 to 2012 are archived in the Display Case. and here's the original March 2009 thread from when it was "rebooted" the first time which actually does a pretty good job of explaining what the JCS is and why it existed :p

A little of column A, a little of column B... The staff (myself included) saw it as just encouraging people to post post post without thinking or reading what they were even replying to, making a lot of noise and making the board move needlessly fast. It also disadvantaged people who took the time to write longer, thoughtful replies (like this and yours) as opposed to short replies or jokes, like most of my posts ...

It got cancelled and restarted and cancelled and restarted a few times, but in the end the lack of activity did it in for good; there's not much to award when a few days had nobody post at all.

All in all, the JCS link — that is, Acmlm Jul Championship Series — should probably have been purged at some point, but it's one of those historic cruftules that doesn't get in the way enough to bother.

ftr, i don’t support actually reinstating JCS; i pointed it out as a rhetorical device re: the activity in this forum. actually, it’s pretty funny that the link to JCS is still prominently displayed in the top link panel. we could honestly probably safely remove it from the top panel and no one will complain.
