…what's your naming scheme based on?

All of my things are named after stuff from Watership Down. My husband names his things after Neon Genesis Evangelion stuff.

Past workplaces had naming schemes based on Muppets, and on different words for being drunk.

My devices are all named after characters from the webcomic Outsider.

x86-based devices are named after loroi characters. My current desktop is Stillstorm (replacing Tempo, who replaced Greywind, who replaced Eighth Dawn; another late-90s desktop, named Sunfall, has not yet booted, and several mid-2000s desktops in my possession are unfinishable and unnamed.) My current laptops are Nova, an Acer laptop from 2009ish, and Ashrain, a 2007 MacBook Pro (there's also Talon, a 2007 MacBook, and Swiftsure, a Dell laptop from 2001, which are currently inoperable.)

Non-x86 devices are named after alien characters. That includes both of my phones: Alex, a Samsung Galaxy S6, and Hamilton, the Galaxy S5 that's temporarily replacing Alex while it's inoperable. There's also Rigai, my 2005 eMac that is also inoperable. There aren't very many more named alien characters, so I may need to move non-x86 devices to a separate naming scheme if I come into a bunch of them.

There's been an impressive array of laptops in my hold (though one generally acts as a desktop): kuriputo, ooshe, warata, suguri, and keshi. kuriputo has actually evolved into kuriputoraido with the last reinstall, which is a bit of a mouthful tbh, but it fits the clunkiness.

My past server was rikorisu and the current one is ikusora.

My phones have been the fangasu line. Currently I'm in hold of fanbuusuto.

These are all Denjuu and I'm still far from running out!

the first time i had n computers to manage at a job where n is a number larger than 4 i thought i'd be real clever and name each one after a chemical element

i later realized i had absolutely no way of knowing which was which at a glance and having just plain numbered them would've been better

at one point i had my desktop, a laptop and a netbook and i thought i'd be cute and call the desktop mars, the laptop phobos and the netbook deimos

these days i have a server called univac (actually univac2 since it's its successor), my desktop is uss-voyager and my thinkpad is tabby, for its tablet screen

My old naming scheme: garbage + processor speed. The new one is just whatever nice name I can come up for it.

Desktops:

* Kinect (old work laptop, because it's an MSI... get it?)
* Revya Mk.II (current laptop)

Servers:
* valkyrie (old TCRF server)

* noodle (node.js server for TCRF's visualeditor, going to be axed eventually)
* mini



I'm vaguely in charge of naming servers at work and I just name them env-func, e.g. dev-database or dev-database2 etc.

My naming scheme's very boring, if you'd even want to call it a "scheme" - anime characters! (+ recently a suffix of some sort) So currently, there's...

- Nanami-X, main self-built desktop PC
- Rin-G4, PowerBook G4 laptop
- Tamaki-G4, Power Mac G4 DA desktop
- Yui-A3, Samsung Galaxy A3 2017 phone
- Sakamoto-san, Fire Tablet

...as well as a couple things not in use and/or pending repair (ex. Iffy, an iMac G3).

And there used to be...

- Kazari, Asus X5DAB-something laptop ( RIP)
- ...and a bunch more I can't quite recall.

I'm boring, I don't have a naming scheme. I think my current computer is still called E7500 and it was previously called the E5500, but that's it. I guess this isn't much of a problem for me because I don't have a home network. It's just one computer, the rest is just cellphones or game consoles.

My previous computers didn't have a name, so I just called them by their manufacturer.

if/when I start naming things it'll probably be after trains, like the 9000 series or the 681 series and stuff like that

I think Iffy might actually be named just that, it's been a while since I had her running (ca. 1½ years?). Nanami could be something like "Nanami-X4", since she's based on an AMD Phenom II X4; the "X" just stands for "extended" or "expanded" or somesuch, since I added it to "Nanami" whenever I upgraded her at some point... either when she got the SSD or the current mainboard and RAM.

The PBG4 I lucked into for rather cheap after basically getting ripped off with a 100% dead one - 17", 1.5 GHz but on a fried logic board, and missing parts. The working one's a 15" from 2005, 1.67 GHz, 2 GB RAM, Radeon 9700 with 128 MB VRAM and a 64 GB SSD via a mSATA-to-IDE adapter, running OS X 10.5.8. Older post about here here.

My desktop's name is SHINONOME and the hard drives are NANO and HAKASE.
And then my laptop hard drive is SARIA, on MEADOW.

I literally just name all my things after random characters I like. It's customary and it works reasonably well enough... it's sorta based on my Dad's custom, which was to use video game characters and have all the drives on a computer named after characters from the same game... I kept that custom even after I started getting my own computers, although I stopped limiting myself to video game characters.
My old desktop (and this one for a couple years) was all named after Star Fox 64 characters -- the computer was FOX, and I had three drives, aptly named PEPPY, FALCO, and SLIPPY.

That sounds like a ridiculously terrible idea unless you like constantly babysitting your hard drives to they don't crash and burn

Fun fact: One of those drives actually did end up crashing and burning at some point...

And of course the one it happened to was SLIPPY.

(well, okay, there was no burning involved, but the drive did die)

Blobby: desktop, K6-III @ 412 MHz, Windows 98SE
Eclipse (8-bit Beast of Power): desktop, Phenom II X2 555 @ 3.2 GHz, Windows 7
Microchip: laptop, Core 2 Duo T6400 @ 2 GHz, Windows XP/7 dual-boot

For whatever reason, the naming scheme (but not the "computer description" scheme?) fell apart half a decade later:

CrashBox (16-bit Bucket of Bolts): desktop, i7-3770 @ 3.4 GHz, Windows 10 Pro
MogBook (32-bit Book of Magic): laptop, i7-7700HQ @ 2.8 GHz, Windows 10 Home

I suspect the current "computer description" scheme will fall apart after the next upgrade, lest I wind up with a "512-bit Eater of Worlds" in a couple decades...

I never named anything until 2010, and my naming schemes have changed a few times.
links for context because loads of things named after stuff

Back in 2010, I first started out using names inspired by demoscene stuff:

derpbox (okay, this doesn't count): my custom desktop, back when it was powered by a Celeron and a Mac from 2003 ran circles around it
asskicker: my custom desktop, after the Core 2 Duo upgrade
vixen: Aspire One D250, kinda ties into my next naming scheme
altirra: Old HP Pavilion laptop that became my main driver before I got my MacBook Pro. Also see below, because it kinda ties into two schemes at once, and it kinda didn't fit in this so much

After those names, I kinda went onto just using feminine names for a couple devices:

cerise: Satellite L355D, a laptop I got in 2009 but never named until it got a Linux install in 2010
lilith: iPod touch 4
celia: Asskicker, but Linux
altirra: Old HP Pavilion laptop that became my main driver before I got my MacBook Pro. Also see above, because it kinda ties into two schemes at once

And there weren't any new devices for a while, though when they started popping up I gave them names related to music I like instead
shortbus: HP EliteBook, still gets some use today if I need Windows 8.1 for something ... also the only machine to be named after an album outright without a title track
polaris: iBook G4, actually obtained in 2011 but never got a name until it got a Linux install
orion: my second custom build, which is currently my main machine to this day
octavarium: 2011 15" MBP feat. 6750M ... again, didn't get a name until I booted a new OS on it
blackearth: Raspberry Pi 2, used as a secondary PC until the Pi 3 (also fun is that there's an album sharing the same title)
painkiller: Raspberry Pi 2, used as a retropie box/media center
advent: iPod touch 6
tuonela: Raspberry Pi 3, replaced blackearth as secondary desktop
generator: WinBook TW802, my Windows 10 machine that I never use anymore because it's an exercise in frustration
nonserviam: WinBook TW800, big Windows 8.1 tablet I sometimes lug around in case I need a Windows machine
limbo: WinBook TW700, was supposed to be a RetroArch handheld thing of sorts but then I got a bluetooth controller and the Vita got hacked

Wow, that's quite a list.

There's also my servers, too, following the gaming theme:
belmont: Optiplex GX220 (or something) that was my server from 2010-2014.
oak: Raspberry Pi B+, named for its pink case at the suggestion of Typhoid

Way too many things. A lot of them were project machines that just.. didn't go anywhere, unfortunately, like the Windows tablets, or just got named near their end of life.

Bet you I've still missed stuff, too.

Naming schemes?

As long as I remember, my main computer is always named Washuu-Inverse (currently on the 3rd iteration). And the 3 storage devices inside had the same name too since like, forever. Washuu (System SSD), Ayeka (Data HDD) and new Lina (Game SSD)
My main Laptop is always the Mercury Computer, and it's SD card is Saturn.
and after that I use mostly Sailor Moon charachter names for consoles and stuff (PS3 is Haruka, X360 is Minako, Wii is Setsuna).
And my mobile phone is the Disk System.

The Network is called HUBA and the NAS is known as Osaka.

URIs must be properly escaped, they must not contain unescaped
characters below U+0021 including the space character and not
above U+007E. Tidy escapes the URI for you as recommended by
HTML 4.01 section B.2.1 and XML 1.0 section 4.2.2. Some user agents
