Do you practice any sort of meditation? I've been meaning to get back into it (and just tried to do it for a handful of minutes to mixed success), but in a world that constantly has things needing done, taking time to specifically "do nothing" feels wrong, even worse than procrastinating, where something is getting done.

It's very hard to convince myself that it's still valuable, useful time, even if it is the opposite of being active.

Not meditation exactly, but I have some ways to reduce stress at times. For example, since I live on the side of a hill, if I need to get my mind off of things I can just go around the house and stare at the city below for a few minutes. Since I'm still inside the house (sort of), it's not likely that anyone will end up interrupting me as well.

I can also play a bit of Densha de GO! to distract myself. Sure some stages are difficult, but other stages have mostly nothing happening, or significantly less things that it still ends up being a relaxing experience instead of a boring one.

If I'm having a particularly rough time I may just lay on the couch for a few minutes while I organize my thoughts.

I really enjoy meditation when I can do it, and regular practice had a lot of benefits for managing anxiety and depression. I was better able to regulate my reactions to things.

I can't really get to do it right now, but I practice a bit of mindfulness when I do some things, like rocking the baby. Helps keep me calm when I might otherwise get frustrated.

Sort of! I'll play Stickerbrush Symphony and close my eyes and take deep breaths when I'm stressed or want to calm down. It helps me a lot. A few other songs do it too, but that's just the one I use most commonly (especially some remixes of it).

I'd say it's more of a calming ritual than actual meditation though. I have others too, like closing my eyes and covering my ears in the shower (makes it feel like I'm out in the rain). Also if we're getting heavy rain (which is very rare here...) I'll turn off all sound distractions and just listen to the rain.

I do not understand meditation. I believe I am mentally incapable of times of peacefulness. I can't even lower my stress levels any more.

Oh, on this note, Buddhify recently updated their app if you like guided meditation things. And it doesn't seem to cost a small fortune, like Headspace…

I want to but every time I try I get restless (or uncomfortable with the invariably-substandard space I'm more or less stuck in)

This is pretty common, actually. It doesn't happen all the time with me, but it definitely happens.

What is it about the space that's substandard? Is it a noise thing? Just wondering, because there are meditations that have you just… listen…

It's not comfortable, for one. I'm a fat shit who keeps breaking chairs, so for the time being, if I want privacy, I have to sit either on the edge of my bed or on the floor. Which means I'm in my room, so there's the temptation to just dick around on my computer or something instead.

(Unrelatedly: Watching myself type, and type quickly, is oddly fascinating.)

You just have to work on your focus. It is difficult at first, but if you keep trying eventually you can make progress.

Or you don't have to sit at all if you don't want to. I meditate lying down sometimes, flat on my back. Although there is the risk you'll fall asleep.

This could be meditative. Paying attention to just about anything can be a meditative activity. I know drawing and cross-stitch have a very similar effect on me as meditation, if I am focused enough.
