So… one of the first things you learn when you're trying to get babies to sleep is that everyone has "sleep associations". That is, things we do, or have with us, to help us sleep.

With babies, this can be things like being swaddled, rocked in a parents arms, having a dummy (pacifier), having white noise playing… they can't fall asleep without it, and if it's gone when they go from one sleep cycle to the next, they wake up.

But we don't grow out of these when we're adults. We all still have sleep associations, and if they're not there, we have trouble sleeping. We also wake in the night a lot, we just don't remember a lot of it, because we go right back to sleep.

I hug a pillow, and I seem to have trouble sleeping if my husband isn't in bed too. I also can't sleep without the weight of a quilt cover on me, even when it's hot. If I try to sleep just under a sheet… yeah… no.

Do you know what your sleep associations are?

So there's several things that help me sleep.

I need a pillow under my head, but that's common enough.

I do hug a pillow. In cases I don't have one, like when traveling, I tend to grab at least a piece of clothing to squeeze, or a bit or my sleeping bag.

I much prefer to have the window open. Can't stand it being humid; fresh air throughout the night helps me a lot.

I used to sleep almost exclusively in pyjamas but I've started sleeping naked or nearly naked and it's pretty nice. Can be add odds with the window being open if it's cold, though (in which case air takes precedence!).

I sleep on my side, usually. Generally I start sleeping as such, too, but when I feel like I have time and want to think a bit, I lay on my back instead. Tends to be that then I get to the point where I feel like I'm dropping asleep, and roll onto the side to be more comfy.

Sometimes I don't turn off notifications and if somebody messages me and I'm awake to hear the vibration, I check my phone, even if I don't respond... this part probably isn't very healthy.

I don't have much of a problem sleeping in unfamiliar places. It can happen to me that I lay awake for what feels like forever, but it doesn't bother me too much.

Yup, I also sleep on my side primarily and need to hug a pillow. I don't ever check my phone at night though unless someone is calling. In fact, for the longest time I used to have my phone off at night. I only started leaving it on because I'm on call for sysadmin stuff (but there's almost never anything going on anyway...)

Most importantly perhaps is I need some white noise. That's why I have a fan in my room. I turn it on even in the coldest days of winter

Oh, did I mention that I don't like noise in the night? It bothers me even if there's just a computer on whirring, or a charger producing a constant low-volume beep.
I really hate where I am now because of the traffic. Please can I live on the countryside and hear the crickets instead... ;v;

I never really needed anything to get me to sleep, other than just... trying. These days I guess you could say that putting on my CPAP mask is that, but it's certainly not required judging from how much I fall asleep without it.

Maybe it's because I'm too tired in the first place

Hug pillow is needed as well, but for me I also have to put a piece of cloth on top of my ear. If I happen to be specially tired then I can sleep without those for some time, but not during the entire night, at least not easily.

My phone is silenced at night, so I don't get any notifications interrupting me, but if I do happen to wake up for a brief moment, I can sort of look at my phone to see if there's anything important, and if there isn't, back to sleep I go.

I can sleep easily with no sound as well. I need the white noise of a fan because I live in an urban area where there will always be other noises during the night. White noise at least covers all other noises so that footsteps upstairs or cars outside won't keep me from falling asleep.

I had to live in our Central Business District once (I think people in the US call it "downtown"), right near some noisy nightclubs, so I learned to sleep through all kinds of noise and light. It was either that or not get much sleep.

My husband USED to be very sensitive to any source of light, but he's gotten used to the night light/thermometer we have in our room for the baby.

Like FieryIce, a fan going at night year-round is a must for me. Any noise other than a fan will wake me up quickly.

The room in which I am sleeping also has to be dark. My neighbors love to leave their porch lights on, and there are always several vehicles driving down the road late at night. I have worn sleep masks in the past to address this, but now have blackout curtains on each window and a rolled towel covering the gap under my bedroom door.

Lastly, perhaps stemming from some sort of phobia, I have trouble sleeping if any three-dimensional object appears to be staring at me. This includes any sort of plush character or figurine and even my own reflection in a mirror.

Haha, I grew up next to a freeway, with a woefully insufficient sound wall between it and our neighbourhood.

Sleeping requires lots of noise.

Lest I wake up in panic at everything.

I usually listen to smooth jazz before sleeping because it reminds me of when I'd stay at hotels and we'd put The Weather Channel on

I always sleep hugging a pillow. ~w~

I kiiindaaa wish it was my boyfriend instead, but that might just be even more impractical since I move around a lot and I want to keep hugging, hehe.

I, too, have found the pillow to be far superior to an actual dude.

They don't move. They don't fart. And very importantly, at this time of year, the pillow doesn't sweat in the hot weather.

when it comes to sleep, the first thing you need to know about me is i hate total silence b/c of tinnitus. i usually crack a window open, but this is harder in the colder months.

my routine goes something like this. i usually slowly dim the lights as i get ready. i write my journal on my computer and then conduct my bedtime washings routine:
  1. shower

  2. oil cleanse

  3. foam cleanse

  4. chemical exfoliant¹

  5. toner²

  6. serum

  7. face mask²

  8. eye cream

  9. moisturizer
incandescent rope lights line my ceilings and they get warmer as they get dimmer. by the end of the night, i have them on the lowest setting until it’s time to move into my bedroom. i usually play Japanese relaxation music from the 90s to help me get in the mood for sleep. i also have many electronic candles which help set a sleepy mood as well. these produce warm, soft ambient light. i adjust the heater to ensure a humidity of 40–60% and a temperature of 65–71°F.

finally in bed, i’ll read my Kindle or play a relaxing Game Boy game in my LED strip light-lined loft next to my 100 lumen DRÖMSYN lamp (the cloud lamps in the picture below):

then i think about nothing, focusing on the ambient noises of the night.

i don’t rly hug anything. and honestly i usually hate having another person in bed w/ me, but maybe that’s b/c my bed is only full size and it’s lofted.

i keep my phone far away, plugged in in the other room, so ask to minimize the distraction from the task of rest.

as far as clothing goes, i’ve cycled through T-shirt + shorts to sleeping nude, but have settled on Japanese pajama sets:³

i actually sleep great every night.

¹ Fridays and Mondays only
² to be integrated in future routine upon the arrival of product
³ i’m considering going back to sleeping naked ever since the decision to shower at night

Before I fall asleep, I like to read in bed, preferably from a book rather than a screen. I don't always do this, but it really helps if I need it.

I always sleep on my side with my head on one pillow and at least a sheet covering me. I need to stay warm, so in colder weather, I'm usually under warmer blankets. I prefer to sleep in the dark, but a little light is fine. I like to sleep in silence or with some white noise like from a fan or the rain, but anything else is distracting. I can sleep anywhere between fully clothed and naked, but I usually sleep in my underwear.

I don't sleep with a stuffed animal or a pillow to hug, and it felt unnatural every time I tried it. Hugging or being hugged by an actual person is nice, though, assuming I'm comfortable enough with them to sleep with them.

Fellow on-side-pillow-hugger checking in. Usually the pillow is also under the sheets.

Sharing the bed with another person instead of a pillow is usually nice, but how long that stays comfortable really depends on the size of the bed...

I don't mind sleeping alongside someone else, but when I do it's usually back-to-back so we can lean on each other. I have to be facing away from the other person in any case because of my mask, and I can't stand feeling warm air against me.

Also I have no idea how anyone can sleep on their back.

i don't have much of a routine to sleep, if i'm tired enough i just fall right asleep on my bed however i do

i sometimes sleep hugging a teddy bear slightly larger than my whole torso but it's not a requirement for me to sleep

something i really like to do to sleep though is being in a voice call with my partners because i like feeling like i have company at all times

on the rare occasions that i did physically sleep with someone else, i'm the little spoon always

I need to have a fan, on the highest setting. not sure if it's just the noise or the actual breeze, but both of them do help.
