So, I was talking in another thread about… a mishap… involving a HTC Vive Controller… and a TV. My husband was getting a bit excited in Onward and he punched the TV with the controller, cracking it.

And it reminded me, I don't think we have a thread for Virtual Reality here at all. I know some of you do some VR things, but… on what platform? What stuff do you do?

My husband is really the VR guy here. He was convinced we'd never have any "fun money" again after we had kids so he bought a HTC Vive beforehand. However, I also do play with a few things. I like Tilt Brush the best, but I'm also fond of Audioshield, and there's bunches of things in The Lab I still like to dick around with (archery! ARCHERY!!). Also had a ball in some mini golf thing, I think it's uhhhhh Cloudlands?

I had to stop though because pregnancy hormones mess you up for VR sickness. So I've only been in VR again once since the baby's arrived, and I played the Voltron game, and I was so very very bad at it.

that new Vive Pro looks pretty neat

though i'm kinda scared to hear what the price is, since the normal one is like $600 or w/e

i have a few games that support VR, and a couple that were designed around it (but obviously i haven't played them yet)

I've really wanted to try more VR, but it's just too expensive right now, especially after having just bought a car which I'm still making payments on and having bought a decently new laptop. I'd have to upgrade my computer to boot, since the video card in it is a few years old, and maybe even have to install a different OS (ugh).

I also don't know how well it will work for me considering I wear glasses ... I got a little headset you can use with your phone (though mine isn't really supported) and I either had to have them squashed up against my face or just deal with the fact I couldn't really see well

I want a VR headset just to roam VRchat.

Upgrading my computer is a necessity though.

The other thing that seems to be needed is often a lot of room, which is definitely not something we have

I played Eagle Flight on a PlayStation VR thingy once and liked it.

Eagle Flight is way cool because someone who comes around here every now and then actually worked on it

Until more titles come out for VR, I really wouldn't suggest it to most. It's frickin' cool, but it's a bit empty still yet. Plus we may have a few generations of upgrades which makes older hardware too 'dated for use'. Though, Valve may continue to support old hardware even if they replace it with improved hardware in newer models.

It's definitely not a greenhorn tech now, but still not been easily accessible enough to consider worth the cost.

My brother has bought a HTC Vive some time ago. I've played it a couple of times since, and I don't know if I'd consider it worth the money. SUPERHOT was fun, and I remember playing some weird ninja wave survival thing. The latter was very complicated and required a lot more accuracy than I could provide.

I also had one short experience with an Oculus Rift as part of a research thingy once. I found both headsets to be really blurry, and I've had trouble reading text on the Vive. I'm mildly nearsighted, which I figured wouldn't be much of a problem when the screen is so close to my face. Maybe I'm misunderstanding how it works.

I'm not entirely sure how it works, but I can definitely tell you that being nearsighted does very much cause things to be blurry, just going from what I saw. I assume the lenses that headsets use try to make the "focus" of the screen distant and that's what causes it.

I don't have access to VR equipment yet even though I do meet the requirements to run it (GTX 1060 6GB, not sure the CPU requirement though). Been hearing that the Bethesda's take on VR is a bit of a mess on PC, especially in Fallout 4 VR. Also been hearing about the VR Chat shenanigans right now.

Posting from VR, sort of. I have one of those goofy put-your-phone-in headsets and some boring VNC-to-VR app ... while it's laggy and fuzzy (owing no doubt to the low resolution and my nearsightedness) it's an interesting experience to use my computer in VR, in a way. I'm still typing on my real keyboard but I'm not actually looking at my screen at all.

It's the kind of thing that makes me want real VR. Maybe some day.

I wonder if you can use it to view something like this? Tilt Brush Virtual Art Sessions ??

I would assume so, but it would probably work poorly. My phone was already getting quite warm just from rendering a very basic 3D view of my desktop, and the framerate is definitely sub-60

Time to build your own VR headset.

Pi, VNC method, cheap LCD+driver, gyro...

I mean, that is more or less what all sit-down VR is.

it’s ok.

i almost got into VR photography when i was still working at the paper, but they laid all of us off before it could happen. maybe some day.

a good pal of mine works for Epic Games, though, and spends a lot of time on VR development & he can’t even think about VR w/o getting upset. i guess he’s too close to the whole thing.

Yeah, I also have a friend who gets quite upset about VR because he's so close to it (co-inventor of VRML). Although I think he's a lot happier now with things like WebVR being around.
