Starting to realize that with AIM going away, there's not much reason to have that there. Technically imood still exists (yes, really), but what else can we put in there?

An alternative is just not having anything like that and suggesting people just put that information in their bio, which is sort of what happens as it is...

Probably replace AIM with like, Discord or something. Maybe Telegram as well. Those are kind of my first two knee jerk reactions, but I'm sure I'll think of something later on down the line to add to this.

Discord, Twitter, and Steam are all I can think of. Given a common interest in games, at least Discord and Steam are relevant.

I highly doubt we need to litter with more like Snapchat, Instagram, or any other nonsense like that.

I didn't even think about Steam or Discord, but those seem like two pretty good options. Telegram is an option, but it's one of a billion of the "classic" IM style programs (WhatsApp, LINE, Signal, etc)...

I don't think we really need an IM program, though maybe I'm just behind the times.

Discord seems smart. And definitely Steam.

One thing I don't think has been mentioned so far is Mastodon. Maybe there's a good way to combine that with the possible Twitter field mentioned earlier if you want to keep the list small, since most people I know of mainly use one or the other.

There's also the possiblity of a pronouns section, but we already have a "Sex" one (which itself should probably be updated). But at the same time, name colors were traditionally used to show that (and staff levels); it may be time to decommission that idea and instead provide some generic colors that can be picked and just offer a pronoun area.

It seems like Discord, Twitter, and (maybe) Masto are probably the best ideas for messenger/site fields these days... or just allow one and add in some internal parsing for Twitter vs Masto URLs or something.

The nice thing of having profile fields is it encourages people to fill them out.

There is, of course, a lot of options; Telegram is my primary and preferred method of communicating with people currently, so I'd vote for it to be included.

Alternatively, maybe just a "messenger fields" with a dropdown of ones to include or something, so you can add as many as you want (up to what is supported) or something...

Discord and Steam are definite "should have"s.

Twitter would be easy to add as well.

I think I said something about the pronouns/sex/gender thing once. About how it'd be nice to have? Or just that people could put it in their title.

A mastodon field would just be a URL. Could be useful. Though, might just be better to put that in main bio field. Would look nicer than a generic link text. Especially considering how many masto instances exist. Would also then support other oauth services essentially. "Federated Networking" or something.

I like the idea of Steam and Discord. WhatsApp is very much a bad idea because it uses phone numbers and contacts as usernames. I myself only use it for talking to other people I know IRL. I'm not sure about the other mentioned IM programs.

That's probably going to break the custom name colors on the different themes though.

Kuribo64 has actually separated the color field from the gender field sometime ago.

Around the same time I ended up suggesting more colors:

Blue
Pink
Purple
Green
Orange
Red

Yeah, that's one thing that isn't so good about separating the name colors, they're usually intentionally set to fit with whatever color scheme you happen to be using. And to be honest, plenty of people used the gender field for choosing their favorite color in the first place

Discord
Steam
Telegram
Mastodon
Decouple gender and username color
As a corollary to that, list primary usergroup (e.g. administrator) under username
Maybe show timezone?
