Colored lights on businesses aren't that bad, unless they're either bright, or animated. Or worse, bright and animated, like some of the signs around here.

uninventing blue LEDs will also uninvent blu-rays

side note: cool video about blue LEDs by LGR here

more on topic, i heckin LOVE colored fairy lights

i wanna make it look like a fairy light factory exploded in my room at some point but that'll take a bit in materials and assembly time

right now i have a battery-powered string of lights around my corkboard (you can see it flashing in the background of my streams) and two not-really-working solar-powered strings, one over above my desk and another that mimics the shape of a lightbulb on my window

dunno what i'll do to make them work properly (if you try to leave them in the sun to charge they still last only like 10 minutes at night) so they're just hanging there inoperational for the time being

Next time I'm out downtown Halifax in the evening, I should take some photos around Argyle and Grafton. We recently made one of the streets one-way with limited vehicle access, and there's permanent stringed lights out. There's also The Taboo Nightclub which has their entire building outfitted with lights that can be seen down the entire stretch of Grafton Street through the Nova Centre's Rogers Plaza, down to the southern end of Grafton.

Not quite coloured lights, but still pretty.

I meant more like blue LEDs on (what seems to be all) consumer electronics, which are invariably blindingly bright with the main lights out.

Seen it, love LGR

Also: the problem I have is that in both my bedroom and office, the only socket that'll accept them is in the ceiling fan, so if I want to do something like play MTG by webcam, everything is shrouded in shadows and glare.

I have a green light on the bedside lamp if that counts. I use it at night because it gets too dark in here to actually see anything, but I don't want it to be too bright to the point where I can't sleep. Previously it was yellow but after thinking about the subconscious effects of colors I thought "maybe it's better if I bought a blue light". Turn out, there wasn't any, so I got a green one instead. It works well, I think.

Only colored lights I have are my pinkish-red lava lamp back at my parents' house, and my UV flashlight here, which doesn't even count because of its "DON'T LOOK AT IT"-style nature.

And I guess a couple of old finger rave lights I have are blue.

Would you believe that Accent Stove & Spa wasn't actually that bad? It was obnoxious, but we mostly laughed at it because it had a ton of very obviously stolen animations; it was like someone just dumped 1,000 Amazing GIFs onto a lit-up sign.

Far worse was Cafe Dolce, which was just down the road; a much larger, brighter sign that would flash this white-on-black text very rapidly.

Back in town here, there's apparently a mobile billboard (ugh) that is very bright, flashy, and drives around on roads. So, good luck seeing anything if you get stuck behind that.

I bought a few more Hue bulbs and the bedroom is actually really nice with two of them (on torch lights)! The living room, too; it's nice being able to make a mixture of pink and cyan lighting, or change lights from white-blue to orange to reddish. It's like f.lux, but for lightbulbs.

I forgot how nice it was to have adequate, good lighting.

Of our LIFX failed
And we also reported a problem with the KRACK patch

And LIFX sent us FOUR replacement LIFX Plus bulbs.

Aw yiss.

Now to make them dance with IFTTT.

I've had our lights doing a f.lux kind of thing with IFTTT for years now, and it really helps with sleep and stuff.

It also really pisses my mother in law off, she doesn't like that our lights just do stuff on their own.

i love fairy lights.. christmas isnt an exciting holiday to me but the lights are always a delight to see amidst dreary winters. i tend to prefer the subdued colours (whites, yellows, blues) to the bright ones (greens, reds). they can be very pretty.

The palm trees are outdoors, so there's that.

One nice thing about these lights is that they're a lot less expensive to run; the Hue that replaced the can light in the dining room yesterday is a whole 6W, while the original was 65...

Finally I can pester people less about their lights being left on all the time
