Xkeeper was just saying in the Surveillance Capitalism thread about internet-connected devices that die for various reasons. He gave the Pebble as an example.

And it just reminded me of all the shitty things with the whole IoT trend.

Like, we have a wifi-connected air-conditioner. You can turn it on and off with your phone (even when you're away from home). But the wifi unit itself doesn't support newer standards (so it's on a separate wifi network at our house) and it can't be updated for the Krack fix. And Daikin are shitty about updating their iOS app too so it's frequently kind of slow and bad.

Also we have LIFX bulbs that are older, and they also can't be updated any more for the Krack fix (although LIFX said they might be working on that one). The newer ones had a firmware update though.

And I had a Parrot Flower Power that I used to monitor some plants and that's just… Parrot stopped caring.

The trend is mostly a cash grab with zero longterm thinking. I would not touch any 'smart' device with a 20m pole.

Not all actors in that market are bad though, but a lot of the least bad ones are your typical fresh graduate techbros who launch some dumb startup thinking it'll be epic, and end up crashing and burning.

The main problem I see is that everything is locked into proprietary systems; things would be a lot better if you could open them up and make them use your own system, or anybody else's. As they are, they're almost always black boxes, and once the end shuts down it's game over. The problem is some of it is really nice (like the Hue bulbs we have, or the Nest) but even then there's no promise they will continue working.

I didn’t even realize that the Pebble smartwatch essentially went under. It was around and then mysteriously disappeared.

Have to be honest, I thought of this thread and immediately thought of Nintendo WiFi connection for DS and Wii. Although the true reason it ended was because the servers were owned by Gamespy, I believe, and Gamespy became no more. At least there was a good span of time to play those games over WiFi.

But anyway, I get tired of each and every device needing access to WiFi. I’m basically talking about smart devices that aren’t phones or tablets. For example, smart TVs. Depending on the brand and the software, they can have spotty support for apps and such. You are better off buying a console since those at least have long term support.

Nintendo Wifi Connection (and online services in general) are not terribly far from the main content of this thread, I think. There's just nothing you can do in those cases when the servers go offline, only because the people who created it can't or won't release the tools needed to keep it alive.

(Often because, who would buy the new shiny toy if they could keep using the old one?)

Somewhat related: I fucking hate smart TVs. Ours runs Android and it crashes and does weird stuff that just makes it unreliable. We don't run Netflix or anything through it and it still manages to screw up.

Also, on the subject of the Pebble, if nothing else, they kept it going, if I recall correctly. There are no more updates for it any more, but all of the servers and stuff are working, or at least working enough to not break the watch.

Smart TVs are a huge mistake, and it's far better to just have a device that plugs into it to handle all the "smart" bullshit. The problem is that those are rapidly getting assimilated into the TVs themselves and sucking badly.

See also: sorry, you can't use your TV because it's updating, hope your WiFi works.

That reminds me, we should talk about pronouns at some point (or we did and I missed it?) But not here.

But yeah, we have other devices to do all the Smart shit, but the damn Android-based TV thinks its the boss of everything. Sometimes it decides it knows all about resolution, for example, only it does stuuuuuuupid stuff, like make the entire screen a thin horizontal band across the middle of the screen.

Oh yeah I totally want to watch Netflix in, like, 3840x100 THATS MY FAVOURITE RESOLUTION, TV, HOW DID YOU KNOW

TV we had here, while not smart, decided that the HDMI port was quite obviously putting out "13720 × q" resolution.

Technology is weird.

It’s interesting because this reveals the idea that devices can be better if they are built with few and/or specific functions in mind vs being more complex and “do everything”. Mainly because if one function fails that you need to have work, you basically have to scrap the whole product. One such overkill product I can think of are fridges with touchscreens on them and that connect to WiFi. I don’t give a fuck about any of that, just keep my food cold. God forbid if the fridge has to connect to WiFi to perform an update to continue running properly. Which goes to my next point.

It’s like a universal law. “If it can connect to the internet then it’ll try to update”.

UPDATE ON SMART TV:
You can only reboot it by entering a service code (that authorised technicians are meant to know) into your remote. Then it says THIS IS FOR AUTHORISED TECHNICIANS ONLY USING IT WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY and then you get SPECIAL SERVICE OPTIONS but all we fucking want to do is REBOOT THE FUCKING DEVICE.

This is so stupid it makes me shouty. But they only have it like that because to put a reboot option in the regular menu would be a tacit acknowledgement that their TV is crashy as fuck.

An always on TV sounds absolutely horrible - I guess it'd be ok if it was just a TV?

but a smart TV???

My parents have a smart TV and they literally never use the apps on it because the bluray player has all of the same apps, but it actually functions and doesn't take forever to load

Yeah, it does a kind of fake off thing, which means that turning it "off and on again" won't resolve any weird behaviour.

Worse, the sleep mode doesn’t even give you a faster start time. There's always loading lag, and it displays the manufacturer's logo while it loads.

It's an Android device, and you can add apps, but several of them just crash the TV. It's too underpowered to run 4k content natively too (without crashing). It's all really disappointing.

Guess it's time to put it on a on/off interrupt switch or something?

That's how I'd handle one of those TV's.

Also calling back to old post; isn't Nest partially open? Like, I hear tons of OSS types cling to it for smarthome setup because it's more open ended than others. Or am I thinking of an old version and they've gone corporate or something?

This honestly sounds like nothing but dealbreakers for me; there's no reason I'd ever get something like this over a decent "dumb" TV.

Unfortunately they are all things we were not aware of until we had it for a while. I guess also part of what happens when you have to get a new TV quickly because your husband put the HTC Vive controller through the old one. He punched the screen playing Onward.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
