Xkeeper was just saying in the Surveillance Capitalism thread about internet-connected devices that die for various reasons. He gave the Pebble as an example.
And it just reminded me of all the shitty things with the whole IoT trend. Like, we have a wifi-connected air-conditioner. You can turn it on and off with your phone (even when you're away from home). But the wifi unit itself doesn't support newer standards (so it's on a separate wifi network at our house) and it can't be updated for the Krack fix. And Daikin are shitty about updating their iOS app too so it's frequently kind of slow and bad. Also we have LIFX bulbs that are older, and they also can't be updated any more for the Krack fix (although LIFX said they might be working on that one). The newer ones had a firmware update though. And I had a Parrot Flower Power that I used to monitor some plants and that's just… Parrot stopped caring. ____________________ Tarale.net |
