No thank you! And thankfully there's less of a risk of them appearing in households around me because none of the devices obviously support Czech.

I have an Echo Dot, but I mostly use it to make turning the lights here on and off easier. And for adding things to a shopping list so we stop forgetting them.

I've considered getting a copy of HAL2000 (a voice assistant designed for Windows 95 or later) for turning on desk lamp, but besides that, no. Also that's not a 2001: A Space Odyssey reference, rather a badly named product.

Beyond that I don't even use a cell phone (which means no Cortana/Siri)

I've heard there's an open-source one of these available, which kind of interests me, but otherwise… I am pretty sure you can guess my feelings on these things from the thread title and meme image I chose to include.

That said, I wonder if, as time goes on, it'll become weird that I don't have one. If I'll succumb eventually?

The only thing I get Siri to do regularly is set a timer when I'm poaching eggs.

I've just kind of given up. I used to think it was weird, but I've eased into Alexa, turn the living room lights on.

I think my hard-stop is video. Voice I don't care about any more. Tracking is already everywhere (including all over the internet, now) and it's just... not worth it to fight.

I don’t have an assistant like Alexa.

Honestly, to some degree, monitoring could be happening anyway. Any cell phone can track where you are and reveal your location. A smart phone can do the same but more efficiently. Use the internet? I’m sure ISPs, to some level, know what domains and websites you access and when. Different websites track your habits so they can show you ads that you are more likely to click. Pretty obvious when and where you are spending money if you are using credit/debit. Even straight cash will reveal fluctuations of when you make purchases.

For me, talking to a computer is really super weird and I just can't bring myself to do it. It's not even a privacy thing, it's just that the lack of a human element creeps me the hell out for reasons I can't really explain. I can't stand voice-driven automated phone systems, and the first thing I do whenever I get a device with some sort of "personal assistant" functionality (Siri, Google, Cortana, what have you) is turn it off and/or uininstall as much of it as I can. I don't see this changing anytime soon.

Oh, it certainly IS happening anyway. I know our government tracks a lot of metadata from your phone and internet usage, and I doubt our government is alone.

But why opt in to more?? And who is to say that these companies can be trusted with your personal data? Or won't have that data breached?

Like, I know every man and his dog is tracking us, but I am not sure I'm at the surveillance apathy level yet.

Someone should rewire the mic in on one of these things to eternally be fed sweet saxophone music.

Then you'll be giving the privacy invaders hot sax action 24/7.

believe it or not, i was one of the first people to see the Echo. this is b/c they brought a prototype of it to my school to show way before it was even announced.

i thought it was pretty meh. i still think it’s pretty meh.

this, however,

is still meh and rly disappointing that they’re trying to transform their classic robo-pet into a subscription digital assistant.

shame on you, Sony.

not only that, but

those 'smart' gadgets are connected to the internet and need it to function

which allows enforcing planned obsolescence without having to carefully plan how long this or that critical part will last

"oh, this model is no longer compatible with our servers, please buy the newer model "

Sometimes not even that; I have some stuff I got as part of a box-of-assorted-crap that flatly no longer works because the home server is dead and there's no way to bring it back.

See also: Pebble. Great news! Cool new super great watch, the Pebble 2! It's gonna be gre— oops we got bought by FitBit and they're killing our product, bye

The moment I accidentally tap the microphone icon (which given this phone's screen sensitivity, is more often than you think) I just jam on any sort of button to get Google outtahere.

Speaking of this sort of thing, how about how every webpage on the planet wants to know your location now? It was bad enough when it was Geo-IP.

At least it's blockable.

I understand when it's Dominos or something but ugh yeah. Some places, like Bunnings (hardware store) use it to tell you what's available at the store nearest to you. I block it pretty much every time.
