Ah, the new Star Trek sure is different, isn't it? I'm sure it has a lot of fans of older Star Trek quite pissed off… after all, it's quite serious and dark, the characters are much… grittier… and, well, generally it bucks a lot of Trek conventions.

I like it! But I'm not very fussy about the ongoing canon for things like TOS or TNG either, which is one of the things it would interfere with. They haven't explained how all this stuff is happening 10 years before TOS and yet would still fit with TOS and… I'm sure some people would not be OK with that. But I… don't care?

I am looking forward to a bit more interesting exploratory stuff though, instead of just this war and things. I do hope they do some of that now…

I've been totally digging it! But I'm also a casual Trek fan, so any canon inconsistencies would probably go unnoticed by me.

I take issue with some of the nitpicking, because it sounds like fans just want more of the same - the same cheap sets, the same repetetive stories, the same low budget. TV's in a waaaaay different place than when VOY or ENT were on, I dunno if there's a place for that kind of Trek anymore.

The Orville is trying to be that kind of Trek, but it's a Seth MacFarlane thing so it's also full of low-brow jokes, and they have just straight up ripped storylines from Trek.

Some Star Trek fans seem to be really enjoying it though.

I'm loving Discovery, I really wasn't expecting it to be this good. It's no DS9-killer, but it's pretty amazing in its own right, and I'd probably put it right above VOY and ENT. I just hope this puts us back into a time where we have a constant stream of Star Trek. We had an unbroken streak of TNG-DS9-VOY-ENT, so I'd love to see Discovery be successful enough to warrant a new series. I can't imagine it'll run contiguously like TNG/DS9/VOY, given the end of Discovery will set up TOS, but hopefully we get something else out of it.

My personal theory is that
Spoiler:
Because the USS Defiant traveled between universes as well as back in time to the ENT era, if Discovery is planning to use it to get back home, they'll end up in the future, post-VOY.

It addresses any canon issues, as well as opens the show up to do pretty much whatever it wants.

Reddit predicted the reveal weeks ago, so it kinda diminished it for me. Still! I figured the last two big "twists" would be shown in the season finale, and there's still 3 episodes left, so it's all up in the air now!

(Also the latest episode blew my personal theory out of the water, so who knows what's gonna happen now.)

I'd been wondering what the hell was up for a long time now because… well… just… trying to put that character and Starfleet together was just… well, it was puzzling, to say the least.

I thiiiink CBS: All Access has a free month trial (which is where they air the show) so I mean if you signed up now you could probably cancel just after the season ends but you didn't hear that from me.

It made me feel SMRT for a change, I actually pegged the twist in advance (at the mid-season break). I ignored reddit for the entire run of the show, so I wasn't really influenced either way too.

Also for the record, I am excited to be in an era when new run Star Trek is happening again.

I will say one thing; I was kinda disappointed with:

Spoiler:

The fight sequences. I know firing phasers at each other isn't terribly exciting to begin with, but I feel like the previous Treks managed to make them exciting. Thought the ones in the most recent episode were kinda lacking. The hand-to-hand combat stuff was actually pretty great though!

Also, there's no way in hell Lorca's actually dead. I'm willing to bet he's somewhere in the mycelial network.

Also, do NOT follow Star Trek CBS on Twitter, because they will spoil shit not even one day after the episode airs.

I went into Discovery fearing the worst.

Spoiler:
I'd deliberately avoided anything spoilery, but a friend of mine had complained about the mycelial network as a plot device and linked a clip of the rapid-fire spore-jump sequence which really did look absurd, so my expectations were low.

What I got was well-executed and interesting television which started from a bleak place and went right around until it came out the other end as the triumph of old-school Trek over nihilism. The more I've had the opportunity to ruminate on the season as a whole the more I've come around to its way of thinking, and I believe the creators when they say they're working hard to maintain continuity.

I think Bernd Schneider has been running EAS for so long he's got tunnel-vision and can't see past the kind of incidental changes in visual design that were going to happen regardless of what fans might want - there was no way they could present a modern Trek with a visual aesthetic matching that of a series made in the 1960s. I suspect they'd have trouble even if Discovery was set post-Voyager - okudagrams have aged better than jelly-bean control panels, to be sure, but we know how touchscreen interfaces go now, and they don't go like LCARS.

Spoiler:
I actually like the mycelial network, provided they find an elegant way to write it out of existence to preserve continuity - I'd be unhappy with any kind of heroic sacrifice that renders it inoperable. It's a narrative dimension that Trek hasn't really explored much until now.

Looking forward to finding out who's on the Enterprise!
