i'd say it's healthier to have less clout-chasing, but it's one of the big reasons why the fediverse won't ever overtake twitter (although i guess that isn't the goal for everyone, but i've definitely seen people be optimistic that it could happen)

For some reason, the most vocal alternatives people are genuinely optimistic that their little competitor will beat [insert trillion dollar company here] at their own game, and chase that to the detriment of actually building a community with good enough content to actually justify said optimism. i'm satisfied enough that alternatives exist, though. it makes web 2.5 feel less dystopian.

I recently tried 0.4.14 out in VirtualBox and I gotta say, it's not nearly as bad as the reputation claims... sure, it's still in alpha and unstable, but it kinda feels like using Whistler 2419. Especially now that they've hired two full-time kernel developers, and support for programs written for later NTs is just iterative once Server 2003 is done. It definitely will never beat out Windows, but it'll probably be a good replacement for it for Linux users to dual-boot with before 2030.
Yeah, it is nice that they're there at least. It would be worse that they aren't there and people had no choice but to keep the status quo up, I just think that if they were slightly less ambitious and more interested in serving the community they do have (and enforcing some baseline standard of quality), that they'd be better off for it.

hmm... i suppose ReactOS as an alternative to Wine would be interesting... but given all the work put into Wine, Proton, and all that lately by Valve et al, makes me wonder how much better Wine will be by 2030.

Considering the two projects heavily share code with each other, probably pretty well. There's stuff that WINE just won't do, though --- such as anything requiring physical hardware access. I experienced this with a Game Boy cart flasher program (eventually sidestepped the problem with a different flash cart), but it could manifest as some $150,000 equipment where the company is bankrupt and drivers won't be made for any versions of Windows newer than like, Vista.
Personally, I just like the idea of having an open source version of Windows NT. As much as I like POSIX, there's just something that kinda feels... I dunno, charmingly antiquated, even "retro" if you will, about Windows. Especially if it's open source and you can modify the UI to be a perfect replica of an older version --- NT 3.51 for me.

I kinda hope that twitter becoming unusable for non-users will make it bleed people. Probably not platform ending but you know, the less art that's gated behind that shithole the better.

With how much art only gets posted over there, it'd actually be pretty disasterous if it died overnight. Real cool how much of our cultural output is once again dependant on one place not keeling over again. We sure learned from tumblr
