as much as mastodon tries to mimic all of twitter's features, it can't and won't ever be able to mimic twitter's biggest selling point: clout. what's a tweet if there is no possibility that it can ever be a "banger"?

every time i see that someone i know has a mastodon profile, they haven't tooted since two corona variants ago but they'll have a (very) active twitter account. that's because there's no clout to be had on mastodon. why would you post an update on your life for others to see, if no one is going to see it?

these days i only look to the privacy-conscious alternatives if i think they'll be healthier for me. mastodon just isn't that. i think the healthiest solution to a twitter addiction is to simply not use twitter, rather than just finding another platform that functions the same but with less people.

Well yeah, of course, that's the ideal. I've been avoiding twitter myself and every time that I go on I'm worse off for tor it, but some people are fine with being Twitter addicted, they just want to feel like they're doing their form of praxis at the same time.

tumblr's been a good alternative for me. maybe just because of the people i'm around, but it actually seems to be consistently more active than mastodon has been whenever i've tried it.

i see cute art and funny posts... that's good enough to keep me off twitter. and i can say ridiculous things on my blog too

oh, and instagram. i like instagram

Well, guess we'll see who comes out of February on top!
Mastodon was cool for a while, but yeah, it was pretty lonely even back in like 2019. I want to say there were only three or four regular users of the instance I was on, and I imagine most instances blocked me, so probably not much more than that would ever see my posts.

imagine this... what if we had a social software... completely federated, not interconnected through a larger network... where people could make THREADS... and POST in those threads... and their posts could have CUSTOM LAYOUTS... and they would get EXPERIENCE and COINS whenever they POST on the BOARD... and SPEND those COINS on (completely cosmetic ) ITEMS...... we'll call it ..... acmlmboard

I recently remade a Mastodon account. I go back and forth between "Mastodon inherits too many of Twitter's problems to be worthwhile" and "Mastodon is the main hub for Old Web nerds, foss enthusiasts, and weirdo cyberpunk queers and I can put up with some questionable design decisions to be more connected with those people." Currently I'm on the latter, after deleting my previous account in a spell of the former. Plus I got an invite to cybre.space, which I always wanted to join...it's lovely!

Anyway, I'm now @whom@cybre.space~

I tried using that a few years back but I think I ended up deleting the account. Wasn't really doing me much, in the end, and I just ended up modifying my Twitter follows and preferences to suit me instead. I'm pretty sure I went that route to begin with BECAUSE Twitter pissed me off at some point for something.

Probably wouldn't shock me if I change my mind later on.

the best way i found to make twitter usable for me was to turn off the retweets for everyone i'm following, and blocking everyone under 18. i would also mute anyone who kept posting or quoting things that bummed me out

another rule of thumb i followed on twitter was if i saw a paragraph, i kept scrolling and didn't read it. twitter isn't and never will be a place for intelligent discussion

Yeah. I don't think I've ever seen a good conversation on twitter. I used a perfectly good word that was the shortest way to describe the concept I was going for (on searching in my Discord history when I complained about it to my then fiancée, it was "thus") and was told "this isn't English class, Shakespeare".
