i started using a hygrometer years ago; i have some health issues that get really bad once the air drops below 40% inside. even 35% is pushing it. i struggled with this really badly for years, but i recently realised that i can prevent a lot of the humidity loss by applying window seal in the winter. whereas last year i tried to deal with the humidity issue by leaving wet towels in dry rooms and boiling a lot of water, sealing my windows has pretty much eradicated all my issues.
if you're having issues with humidity loss, a humidifier is a good idea, but don't overlook possible insulation problems with your home. it may surprise you that in some cases that may be enough to solve the problems.
anyway the weather here has been on the chilly side but certainly not as bad as it can get in a lot of the world. it has been so cloudy though—not even exciting cloudy, like with rain, or visually interesting like fog—but just an omnipresent, uniform layer of gloom. but then yesterday it rose to 11°C and the sun came out. i went on a nice long walk and got to enjoy the weather a bit.
i'm feeling hopeful about the approaching spring. spring is such a sweet time, and i can't wait enough for its arrival.
