That's my biggest problem with (somewhat) northern winters. I mean, I don't even get much snow in a typical year. I just could really use more daylight.

You can get around this by using natural-daylight-style lights, or just controlling your environment in general. Having grown up in mostly-dark areas — either windowless rooms, or rooms painted dark colors with extremely inadequate lighting — I've learned to appreciate proper lighting a lot more.

It's not a perfect remedy, of course, but it gets you a lot of the way there.

Meanwhile, it's been a warm enough winter that not once did I ever think about wearing a jacket, or even long-sleeved clothes. Feels ridiculous.

I quite like the dark, and still get childishly amused by how much the sunrise/set times vary throughout the year, but I got a daylight alarm clock a few years ago, and wow, it really makes a difference in the middle of winter when there's only like 6 hours of (rather poor) sunlight. It works as a regular light too, so if I'm feeling shitty, I can just put it on and it feels like a cheerier day.

Lately it's been cold, but not unpleasant. At least somewhere above 0°C.

Still annoys me how I can't keep my earbuds in while wearing something covering my ears. They get really cold.

The heat wave is beginning. As per last time, I've shut the roller shutters on the northern side of the house (and they're low elsewhere too), to prevent light/heat getting in. I've closed off rooms and shut off air conditioning vents to increase efficiency.

I've lost the container I had to put water out for local fauna. :/

I'm pretty sure nothing in my yard should catch fire today. I removed all the dry, dead grass on the weekend because I knew this hot weather was coming.

As a person who lives in Northern Europe, even 35°C seems insanely hot, and it happened once during a summer.

I took my work laptop home on Wednesday, because it was going to be pretty heavy snow that night, and I might not be able to make it to work. Yesterday, sure enough, we're covered in a blanket of snow, so I had a nice little snow day.

Getting to work today made me realise how thankful I am that the laptop bag is incredibly well padded, because I threw it down the street, trying to not slip on the ice. Given how long it took me to get a half-decent work laptop in the first place, I'm willing to bet I'd be waiting a long time for a replacement if I needed it. Pretty sure they didn't budget what might happen if somebody heaves a rather expensive laptop like it's a frickin' curling stone.

Apparently the forecast is calling for rain again early next week, which... well, I'm not going to complain about it at all.

It feels ridiculous that it's mid-January and it's warm enough to literally wear shorts and a t-shirt and not feel cold. I've left the window open all day and night and my blanket is keeping me more than adequately warm, even with the fan going, too.

This summer is going to be hell.
