Give me some examples of NES games that are generally thought of as bad games. Can be USA, Europe, or Japan.

This is for research, but didn't feel it was worth posting on the Gaming forum.

Thanks!

Deadly Towers.

Though, fun fact, once you actually get past the complete garbage early game and start getting some power ups, it's a lot more manageable. The game also features some interesting ideas too, I don't remember if all of the dungeons (aka towers) did this, but I know at least some had a "dark side" alternate world to them and stuff.

Oh, I should note, the music is probably the worst part of the game, not because the tracks are always "bad", but because of how they loop every screen and because of how short they are.

Oh man.

Bart vs. The Space Mutants

Just... did they even playtest the second level or were the testers so practiced in timing and performing some very awkward jumps during the platforming over wet concrete section, I might have had better luck making it to the thrid level.

I can finish stinking Donkey Kong Country in under an hour and yet I can barely crack this crap.

I'm one of those weirdos that actually liked Deadly Towers. :/

But to answer the question, my least favorite game ever, not only because it's boring but because of the objective and concept, is Wall Street Kid. I have nothing against a game where you buy/sell stocks, but good grief does it have to be boring? American Dream on Ouya (yes Ouya) had a similar concept, but at least that one was fun to play.

We're Back: A Dinosaur's Story for SNES.

Not many people remember it, I imagine, but I remember it sucked sooooo bad.

I'll have to play with it sometime, Robbie! Unfortunately it's SNES. :O

To elaborate further on what I'm using this for, I'm going to be doing a con panel on bad NES games (as my NES Expert side gig) and am looking for old, bad games. :3

Keep going, please! This is a great list so far!

There are some famously bad games, like these ones:
  • Action 52

  • Back to the Future

  • Color a Dinosaur

  • Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

  • Dragon's Lair

  • Hydlide

  • Karate Champ

  • Little Red Hood

  • Taboo: The Sixth Sense

  • Where's Waldo

Of these, I personally dislike Action 52 the most.

-Rollerblade Racer might fit.
Just one note: The few places I've seen it described say that tricks always fail but rather, they only work when going from sidewalk to road or vice-versa. There's a minimum speed as well, and I think they only work in the first level?
I couldn't get them to work in the city and didn't bother to test past that.

-Hoshi Wo Miru Hito is apparently very terrible also.

-Most Color Dreams games. (any beat-em-up, King Neptune's Adventure is particularly awful.)

I feel like this would have worked well in gaming, too, but it's fine here.

If you're going to say Where's Waldo, you have to also include Home Alone by the same developers. oh no!

Castlequest / Castle Excellent is also a terrible game based off an MSX game (iirc). It's not really bad in any way other than being an extremely boring maze game.

Castle Excellent was originally for the old FM-7, PC88, and X1 computers, then got ported to famicom and msx a little later. it's a sequel level pack to a game that was also on a bunch of old computers (MSX, SC-3000, FM-7, etc)

dunno why i'm clarifying this (maybe because i saw it in a FM-7 collection once?)

If we're talking about bad NES games exclusively, I must nominate X-Men.

Even if it's not objectively bad, it was definitely disappointing for someone who was starving for superhero games at the time.

Takeshi's Challenge should also get a shout out if only for the fact that it basically sucked on purpose because Beat Takeshi really hated video games.

Like seriously with how ludicrous it is to progress in the game, it should be obvious how much hate oozes out of every line of code.

Come to think of it, I actually have mentioned Home Alone. I tend to interchange between those two games when I bring up "Bethesda made some bad Nintendo games back in the day" as an ice breaker to other geeks.

I know Back To The Future has a well-deserved bad rep, but I hated Back To The Future II & III with the fury of a vengeful Old Testament deity. Why do I have to find like 50 different items in really horribly designed puzzles? Why does the BttF2 portion only include 1985A, and not 2015 or 1955? How is Biff EVERYWHERE and just some lame ass regular mob? It was just as bad as the first game! I took that one back to the video rental store the same day I rented it. I tried giving it another shot years later, and it just wasn't happening. I'll stick with Super BttF2 thanks.

Yes, Uncanny X-Men needs to be on that list. Sweet lord does that need to be on any and all Bad Games lists. I've played really bad Chinese "bootleg originals" that were more fun than X-Men. People like to say Superman (NES not N64, I won't defend the latter) was terrible, but I had SOME fun playing that one. X-Men feels like a WIP that was rushed out the door.

I didn't really mind CastleQuest too much, it was just really hard. I didn't learn until years later that you could screw yourself over if you didn't collect/use keys in a certain order since they were extremely finite and allowed little (no?) room for error. And I wasn't playing with a map.

Maybe this is personal preference, or the fact that I never played any other version of the game, but I remember Infiltrator being kind of dull. Can't say it was bad in presentation, just... not the most enjoyable NES game.

Pirate/bootleg games are probably a bit too easy (I suppose that includes Color Dreams which I mentioned earlier) since there's often no attempt at quality (any bootleg fighting game) but if you'll allow them Pyramid is especially stupid. They've managed to mess up a Tetris style game by making rows potentially (and easily) impossible to clear. The board doesn't wipe between rounds either.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

Five levels of uninspired gameplay with the first level being the hardest of the four main levels. The graphics were also underwhelming for a late NES game. Music and sound effects were also below average. Do you remember the scene from Home Alone 2 where Kevin is chased by malevolent vacuums and luggage at the Plaza Hotel? It also had to be done in one sitting, lose all of your lives and you go back to the first level.

Interestingly, this game is cited as ripping off the sound effects system from the previously mentioned Bart vs. the Space Mutants. However, both games were developed by Imagineering and both composed by Mark Van Hecke. Imagineering was folded into Absolute Entertainment shortly after Home Alone 2's Nintendo multi-platform outings were all released to negative reception.

    --

I also remember people never being able to beat Back to the Future II and III because of its ridiculously long Part II. Imagine trying to remember where all the items go. Then trying to dodge your clones that you created through time traveling, and IIRC, it was another "beat the game in one sitting" game.

(there was a password to skip Part II so at least it showed a bit of mercy)

Karate Champ is really good, I don't know what you're talking about. If both players know what they're doing you end up with a lot of interesting footsies and counter-play. Kinda like Divekick.

I recall even seeing one of those old "How To Win At Nintendo" books, which focused on gameplay strategy more than game quality, and it pretty much roasted Urban Champion in like 1988. No one I knew owned it, and I never saw it available for rent. I played it for maybe three minutes at some point, and while it's not the worst game I ever played, I see very clearly why it's hated. I will never understand why Nintendo keeps trying to bring it back through Virtual Console. It's not like they're obligated to re-release EVERY black box NES game that they legally can.

Holy Diver is the only game I can think of with a "maybe ill jump" button.

skate or die 2, while having the absolute best plot of any nes game, is a real shitter of a game.
