If you're wondering why I was quiet, now you know.

Fun things:

- It was cool enough that it doesn't feel hot outside, and the ocean wasn't ice-cold yet either. Not that I went that far out into it (only waist-deep at most), but it was nice.

- Having a nice beach means messing around in the sand and building an impromptu (and very simple) sand-castle with BMF. And then making goofy faces in the sand, too.

- The pool at the hotel was heated and felt really good after being on the beach, plus it's deeper than the one at home (7' vs 5')

- Being away from home was nice, too; it was my first vacation out of town since 2015, and my first vacation explicitly for myself

- The hotel we stayed at was the same one my family used to go to 11+ years ago, so there were lots of memories, good and bad

- Being in California meant that I got to play scratchies again, which are fun in limited doses

- Even though I brought my laptop and Switch (as did almost everyone else), I didn't use my Switch at all and only used my laptop for finding places to eat or checking on stuff at night, and didn't put off doing other things for it

- Getting away from work was nice...

Bad things:

- ...right up until a super-anxiety-inducing call on the way there and then spending most of the full day we had stuck on my laptop debugging a release-day thing

- Driving isn't bad, but driving non-stop for 160 miles (the trip home) or during a lot of traffic (the way there) is exhausting, stressful, and achey. My hands hurt a lot, now

- Having to come back so soon

- Almost non-existent planning; we only decided to do the trip "for real" a week before we actually did it, so it was really expensive

- I didn't take nearly enough pictures, mostly because I was a little preoccupied with spending time out

Kinda wish it was longer, but I'm glad to be home some, too

I'm glad you were able to get away for a bit, even with the work drama. On a trip to New York about 5 or 6 years ago, I remoted into my work computer to produce 1 report that took about an hour to complete. That hour was easier than the 5 hours it would have taken me to train someone on how to properly create it and verify the results.

I've never been to Laguna Beach specifically but we've driven by it on our way to Dana Point. Living in the desert, California is great to visit for a relaxing getaway. We never stay in or near Los Angeles, though. Too much smog and pollution. We'll drive through and visit Pink hot dog stand or one of the malls my in-laws love, but that's about it. Our last trip was in June when we took the kids to Lego Land. Much cheaper than Disney Land but my kids had just as much fun.

Yay, holidays! I don't know about Laguna Beach specifically, but I sure love me some beach. The end of the season is usually quite nice too. It's been a while since I swam in the ocean but now you mention it I kind of miss it.

sucks you hit traffic and soured part of the trip... traffic can really decide how things go--along with good in-car entertainment

I drove all the way down to San Diego and back (~500 miles each way, about 300 nonstop and then a quick bite to eat, total travel time around 12 hours) and had a lot of fun/relaxation with the drive. I took more days off than I needed so I could account for driving way out of the fastest way for something more scenic

one might say your mileage may vary

You know if anyone is interested in a major Jul vacation/meetup, Fanime during Memorial Day weekend is always a thing. You don't even really need to get a hotel downtown; the light rail literally has a major stop at the center itself, and presale tickets for Fanime = generally reasonable and tickets for the rail are pretty doable.

It'd be nice if we could all get together to do a thing is all. :3c

Unfortunately, it looks like the work drama only increased since I got back, so I could really use another vacation (maybe this time for a year or two)

Laguna Beach is alright, it's one of those little coastal cities. I forgot how small it actually appears to be. The hotel we stayed at shares a fairly private beach with another hotel or two, so it was really quiet and generally relaxed.

I don't remember the last time I was actually in Los Angeles proper. I think maybe when we went to Disneyland or whatever? But that was well over 15 years ago by this point, and I don't think I'll ever be going back there...

The subject has come up before, but I don't think it'll ever really happen. Too many people spread too far, and it'd probably be really awkward...
