As of yesterday, it's out! (Unless you're playing on PC...)

Anybody else playing it? I'm finding it scratches that nostalgia itch really well, despite being basically all new content. The remixed stages are hugely expanded upon, but they feel like their original counterparts. Also, the music is really good.

There are a few things I'd definitely change:

Bonus Stages just don't feel rewarding or fun? There's no indication of what the rewards are, and you don't get to keep anything of value. If you at least got to take the Rings you got out of them back into the stage... There's so many of them that you can easily spend far more time putzing around blue spheres stages than the actual act you're trying to play.

I feel like they'd have been better as unlockables for beating Acts ("You can now play Blue Spheres stages 1 and 2!") or whatever, and then replace the bonus games with ones similar to Sonic 3's or Knuckles Chaotix -- a fun way to get more items/rings/bonuses.

Special Stages are fun (if a little hectic). I've only done the first one but they sound pretty challenging, too, later on. The endings feel a little anticlimactic where when you get close enough the game just enters cutscene mode; if they let you get a little closer and, say, jump to hit it, it would've felt a lot more satisfying.

The acts themselves are alright, if feeling like huge mazes. CPZ in particular (one of two I've played) is massive and there are so many paths it's usually impossible to tell where you are, as opposed to just "this direction is progress".

Also there's been a few little issues and bugs, like camera lock problems or getting stuck in walls. I'm really glad that the 2P Tails mechanic is back but I wish they dedicated a button to a Kirby Super Star-style "just immediately reappear next to Sonic" method because it takes forever to catch up if you fall behind, and there's no indicator of where you are offscreen.

Also the boss of CPZ is nice but I wish they made it a full game with the later series' rules, but supposedly that was something they were expressly forbidden from doing Eggman Robotnik isn't even a challenge in that fight because, I'd assume, they wanted people of any skill to be able to win.

haven't played it yet, (PC preorder here,) but i'd like to say that getting stuck on walls was present in the first two games as well, such as in CPZ where an unbounded vertical speed could increase your momentum crazy amounts and get shoved into walls or loops, or in Wacky Workbench where falling too far after being launched by the ground lodges you into the floor. not trying to excuse this from happening in Mania, but if they removed the speed cap like i heard they did, i can see why it's happening if they didn't adjust the collision routines as well.

Still trying to figure out why getting wedged against this spring incidentally can kill you.

Anyway, lots of thoughts:

  • Act 1 bosses should not exist. It's a dumb pattern from S3K and I hate it.
  • Most bosses have downright terrible design. CP2 is the worst offender because to be frank, sudden genre changes are bad in so many ways.
  • I got frustrated and annoyed by the above and actually stopped playing for a while. Turns out things get better after CPZ, it just has a bit of a rough start.
  • I admit, I chuckled and smiled at HC1's boss. But one of the pitfalls it has is that the controls for that section are not obvious at all; I missed out on some things until after the fight ended.
  • HC2 boss: Why do I not hear claims of rehashing for the second half? Oh, because the Sonic community is full of hypocritical bastards, that's why.
  • The original levels are a lot more fun than the levels that are taken from other games, but unfortunately there's fewer of them.
  • PG1's presses lead to cheap deaths if you aren't expecting them though. The first one I encountered caught me totally off guard and I was in exactly the wrong position.
  • Tails' flight has ... problems. Brushing up against a wall that's not at a right angle causes you to drop like a rock for no good reason, for one major one.
  • Blue Spheres does not belong as a bonus stage. If the completionist in me didn't demand it to unlock everything I'd never play them.
  • The special stages have some really dodgy controls; they feel very unresponsive. As Xk stated the cutscene ending is a massive letdown, too. Someone in the SRB2 community made a mockup of how it should've been, and it's much better.
  • for gods sake please fix the home button not working half the time

wait, is Blue Sphere the only bonus stage? since the reveal for it jumped into the star ring with 100+ rings, i assumed it was one of a couple different ones a la sonic 3.. and i'll agree, using a previous game's special stage as a minigame is pretty... eh. that's like if they brought back the end-of-level rings from sonic 1, and they did the half pipe special stage, but instead of getting emeralds you just... lose your rings. is this a correct comparison? makes little to no sense if it is

You keep your rings and shield, but otherwise yes. It's the only bonus stage. It never gives any tangible benefits to the game you're playing either, only unlocking extras and such.

ah, that's a bit lame. until they showed off Studiopolis 2 a couple streams ago i had thought the bingo-roller thing was a minigame too like S3's gumball machine

Lots of little bugs here and there, it feels like it's going to need at least one or two patches in the future to fix everything.

Playing as Tails is alternatively fun but also kind of frustrating; it's difficult/impossible to keep up with the other player most of the time, you still can't do anything useful like break monitors, and the game doesn't care that a second player is there at all when Tails respawns. I really wish they'd finally make it into a serious cooperative mode instead of just making it feel like a cheap afterthought.

Admittedly, I've been watching Game Grumps play this game, and yeah okay, Arin has weird taste in video games, has weird criticisms, but seeing him actively enjoy a Sonic game when he has never really enjoyed one before makes me interested in buying it.

Because, I admit, I'm in the same boat he's in. Except I've never played Sonic games period. Only made fun of them.

So, that two week PC delay to "optimize" the game?

It was actually to add Denuvo DRM to the package. With such a setup that requires you to be online to play the game.

Requires you to be online. To play a single-player game with no online functionality beyond leaderboards.

Haha, oh wow. And I was actually considering maybe giving this game a try since everyone keeps saying it's the best sonic outing in a really long time.

having finished a playthrough of it now, it's... pretty good. if you didn't like the classic games, you probably won't love it, but i do recommend people to give it a try if they're able.

the game being in widescreen certainly helps see upcoming enemies and pitfalls and react as opposed to 'learn the levels' (until the later levels - there certainly is a difficulty curve), and the platforming experience is quite solid, i haven't encountered any bugs with it yet (and i encountered two or three bugs playing the Sonic CD remake years back).

that said, i definitely think there's a LOT of the game's content that is great if you're a fan of the old games, nice references and creative recycling of old ideas. unfortunately this bonus appeal just isn't there if you haven't played the old games.

now, others have said it, and after playing it i definitely agree that having the bonus stages be Blue Sphere is a questionable decision at the very least. they're too long! they get intense! and they don't give any sort of ingame reward! (read: doesn't give bonus rings or a shield or chaos emeralds. i know they unlock gameplay options.) i think if they were accessible in some other way it might be better, but..

the stages get pretty large, as well - i Time Over'd twice! the final Zone's Act 2 is also not too clear about what it wants you to do at first - i think i made two 'cycles' before i realized that i was actually making progress.

i must say though... i really enjoyed it overall. i do have some complaints, but i do recommend it to people who enjoy platforming games.

Graphics? Great. Audio? Pretty good. Gameplay? Aside from the special stages and the occasional gimmick you need to figure out, it's good. Definitely a love letter to 90's SEGA. If they make another game in the vein of Mania, i hope it's not as reference-y/recycle-y, though.

Huh? I thought the Blue Sphere stages did give you Chaos Emeralds in this one.

Shit, you're right, I had them and the goalpost things backwards. Never mind

Anyway I just bought it on Steam so I'll probably get a few stages in tonight. Hooray!

posted not too long ago to the steam announcements:

"Like you, we've noticed an error in the Steam store not mentioning the DRM for Sonic Mania.

We're fixing that now.

Sonic Mania is intended to be played offline and we're investigating reports on that.

We're also investigating other issues like controller support, these are all PC specific things that Christian and the team have been working on these last few weeks

Please bare with us while we collate and investigate problems that are being brought to our attention"
