I've to ask, since America is currently in its darkest timeline and keeping us conveniently distracted from world events; What happened?
We had another leadership spill.
Australian politics works differently to US politics. We don't vote for our Prime Minister the way you guys vote for a President. We vote for our local representative. Often, our local representative belongs to one of two major political parties (Labor or Liberal), and the party with the most elected representatives gets to form a government. The party has a leader, and this leader is the Prime Minister (if they're in government) or the leader of the opposition (if they're not).
Currently we have a Liberal/Coalition government, and the party became unhappy with Malcolm Turnbull's leadership so they decided to have a "spill". Out of that we got a new Prime Minister (Scott Morrison).
Also I've decided he's just as bad as the one we could have had (Peter Dutton). Scott Morrison's into the whole trickle-down economics thing, he's a pentecostal Christian who voted against same-sex marriage, and he was behind a lot of our horribly cruel policies and mistreatment of refugees. But he doesn't look like an evil potato so there's that.
