Just in case you guys think I'm just picking on the USA, my own country is pretty fucked up too.

We're having a postal survey about marriage equality now. It's the stupidest thing and it makes me very angry. Our awful conservative government refuses to have a free vote in parliament over it. So instead they've tried to have the population vote using a plebiscite—and the legislation to do so has failed, TWICE.

So because they're not allowed to have a proper plebiscite through the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC), they're having this fake plebiscite postal survey through the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). And it makes me SO MAD.

For one thing, the postal vote won't be available to a whole bunch of Australians. Homeless people, people on the silent roll, and Indigenous Australians will all find it pretty much impossible to vote. Young people will also have trouble for a variety of reasons, in particular that they move houses so often (locked out of the housing market) so the survey might not reach them in the mail. So it won't give us an accurate idea of Australia's views on this.

Oh and there'll be all kinds of hate campaign shit to go with it I'm sure.

Plus, the ABS have not had a good track record recently with the awful census last year.

JUST GIVE US MARRIAGE EQUALITY ALREADY

I am not looking forward to the hate campaigning the Australian Christian Lobby are gonna throw around, they've gotten started already.

Ughhhhhhhhhh the ACL. Oh man, and I bet the Rundle Mall preachers are going to become even more disgusting, too.

We checked our enrolment and we're good. As much as I hate this thing, it's stupid to boycott it.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that our government can ignore the outcome, too.

I'm mostly really concerned because the whole thing is a macrocosm of my family house. My sister is gay, my brother is queer and my parents are pretty typical right-ish Baby Boomers.

I'm not gonna look forward to them getting shit piled on them about how they're sub-human from religious shit-heels. The whole process has been designed to be as horrible as humanly possible just...ugh. And yes, the Hate Preachers are gonna be insufferable.

The "respectful debate" has begun, and it's sickening. There's awful "Stop the fags" posters appearing, saying LGBTQ people are child abusers, paedophiles, and full of STDs.

The Prime Minister promised this kind of thing wouldn't happen, but of course it was always going to. This is one reason this plebiscite should never have been a thing.

It sounds like the registration drive for this actually ended up signing up a lot of new youth voters, so it looks like their plan may have backfired? Especially considering mandatory voting...

I'm kind of doubtful that it's resulting in higher numbers of new youth voters. More likely there are people updating their existing enrolment information after moving house. But I could be pleasantly surprised, I guess.
