"Bank switching" as a puzzle game mechanic is a surprisingly good idea for me having come up with it in a dream.

I wish game development for old consoles didn't only take the form of homebrew novelties. I'd like to think once we've moved past capitalism and the profit motive is removed, all kinds of hardware will be considered seriously viable platforms for new art. Maybe that's just wishful thinking, but a girl can dream.

...so homebrew isn't valid? I'm not sure I agree; even if your criteria for it being art is "has a story", there's been more than a few of those. Lunar Assault on the Ultra 64, The Mad Wizard on NES, and my own Game Boy project. And none of this is easy, Ultra 64 programming is difficult enough that most prospective hopefuls give up after learning more about it -- you wouldn't know the amount of people who came to the n64brew server expecting to be able to use C# or OpenGL, and when told they can't, and they have to learn a hardware arrangement with 4 kilobytes of texture memory and a strabge hardware setup where the GPU is the top dog that gives commands to everything else, just leave and make something in Unity. I have serious doubts it'll become massively more popular than it is right now even if profit no longer matters because it's too limiting and time consuming for most but the die-hard dedicated, who are already making homebrew.

But hey, I'm all for you being the change you want to see in the world. Thanks to homebrew, there's SDKs for just about any console you can name. I'm not trying to be sarcastic when I say that "I'm certain you'll come up with something good", so if it seems that way through text, I'm sorry.

Homebrew is very much valid! If anything, it's more valid in my eyes than commercial games. What I mean is that no one sets out to make a game and then settles on the NES to develop it for, or something. It's the other way around: they decide to make a game for the NES because they're retro nerds and then figure out what they want to do.

It's only considered an option by those already into it. The major exception I can think of is the Game Boy with GB Studio, where the Game Boy is seen as a viable platform among some groups of indie devs who aren't otherwise interested in homebrew.

Putting aside boring business aspects like console manufacturing and ownership, I think the biggest reasons that most people don't develop for older consoles is due to the limitations of the hardware. Why force your developers to crunch graphics into tiny 8x8 tiles with 4 colors per palette when you can just mimic the art style using modern tools? That's what Shovel Knight did, and the resulting product is far more robust and visually complex than a real NES game could ever be.

This video by the developers of Micro Mages details the type of problem solving and technical wizardry required to cut file sizes in a game for the NES, though their 40 KB goal is far smaller than most NES games.

The biggest argument I can see for older consoles is the controllers. Even though the Switch has superior specs and features, the Wii U's game pad allowed for some really neat game design possibilities.

I once found a copy of the Glide 2 API for download online. I'd like to do something with it some day.

Also, I just bought that EZ Flash Junior to test my Game Boy game on.

That would be great, especially if they actually added some stuff to sweeten the deal, as doubtful as that is. I just want to see that series get any love from Nintendo at all.

Ultra 64's trident controller is perfectly fine. I grew up with the Xbox 360 and even I can get a fine enough grip. Are the buttons in an inaccessible place? Maybe, but even if they were, there's almost no reason you'd need both the dpad and joystick at one time in even a modern game.

Plus, it's iconic and comfortable in my troll hands.

The regular-size N3DS makes my hands hurt, it's too small for them.

Also, I want more games set in FFXII!Ivalice. Like a viera-focused prequel and a Giruvegan-focused one and a Rozarrian side story and an actually-free-to-play MMO and and and

Yesterday I beat Mike Tyson for the first time ever, and I'm still feeling pretty great about it. As a kid I would get stuck on Bald Bull 1 and dream of ever even getting to Tyson, so this was a nice childhood wish fulfilled. Tyson is such an anti-boss, punishing you for using the pattern recognition skills that defined the rest of the game. He disregards the rules of his own game, and while I can see that pissing people off I found it really refreshing.

I'm continuing my way through Mega Man 2 after playing through the first a few months ago. I'd toyed around with it in the past but this is my first time actually making it anywhere in the game. I'm not sure I get what makes this The Big One yet. It's more refined than the first, fixes many of its annoyances, and has classic tunes everywhere, but I'm not seeing too much that makes it stand out. I have to imagine the later games keep the refinements from this one...I'm not being wowed by the level design or bosses or anything. Nevertheless, I'm enjoying myself when I'm not busy dreading going back to the disappearing blocks over the lava on heatman's stage.

Recently I've been trying to have a more conscious and intentional engagement with the games I play. Sometimes it is too easy to slip into the "consumer" mindset, playing games to finish games and move on to the next exciting thing, rinse and repeat.

When I think back to my youth, I remember playing games because I loved existing within those worlds. Hours spent in front of our boxy little TV on the PS1, playing the same levels of the same games, and absolutely loving it.

Where's the rush? What's the hurry? The other games I want to play will likely be there in the future for me to play. For now, I'd just like to slow down, enjoy, and completely fall in love with a world.

Do you all have any games you love to play, purely for the pleasure of existing within them?

i've been playing Super Mario RPG again for the first time in perhaps 20 years.

1. i'm shocked by how simple this battle system is. It really dumbs down every single RPG mechanic, almost to the point of absurdity. i have yet to encounter a game that has such shockingly simple mechanics. The timed hits are actually what make the battles enjoyable, imo
2. i don't understand the plot?? why does Smithy want to destroy wishes? the Axem Rangers literally says 'this star gives people hope and we must destroy it'. a lot of things don't make any sense upon scrutiny
3. i also learned that the Jump spell becomes stronger with each use, maxing out after 255 uses. i ran the calculations and discovered that at max power, Jump is roughly equivalent to 32 timed Super Jump hits. so what's the point in using Super Jump ever, except to get the bonus items associated with it? i actually found this completely shifted the way i approached the game, even leading me to just rely on Mario constantly since further calculations showed that Jump actually overpowers Lazy Shell. lots of balancing problems in this game.

This might be a case of the localization muddying things up. The game's localization has a lot of weird quirks about it that makes it somewhat fascinating, such as weird monster names or Japanese pop culture references being mangled.

i'm not fully convinced the original plot was so much more coherent. i actually read that article a few days ago, but if anything it leads me to believe the game wasn't ever meant to be a very serious RPG.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
