Today is the 10th anniversary of Jul:

It has certainly been quite the adventure, but for the most part we made it here in one piece.

Should've picked chocolate :|

And I can't believe I've been here for nearly 9 years now. It really has been quite the adventure

It's just coated in frosting, really.

Anyway, yeah. It's certainly been a while; a ton of stuff has changed even in my own life. It's weird to think that 10 years ago I was still living in this city, but at home; and then soon after, I moved in with BMF54123, then back home, then he moved here...

Jul itself has changed a lot too, of course. A lot of big names drifted or left, some new faces came in... Even then, a lot of people still hang around on Discord or IRC, and a few people are on Twitter. It'd be neat to have a little anniversary party here with everyone.

Speaking of, if you can't log in for whatever reason, message me on Twitter or at xkeeper @ gmail.com and I'll help get your account set up again

But probably most amusingly is that this community largely spawned TCRF, which has since grown into its own thing (even though the "Wiki" link in the header still goes there); TCRF will be 8 years old on October 25th.

...Now I just feel old

Happy 10th birthday JUL, you were my first exposure to internet message boards and became a place for me to learn and mature.

I have a fond nostalgia for this place, it's nice to see it's still around.

Shit, my 10 year's only a couple months behind, then. Feels like practically a lifetime ago? This place (and to a lesser extent Acmlm's before it) was my introduction to online communities in general.

I hope it was a good introduction, especially compared to the (relatively) toxic outside world compared to here

Hah, well, considering the internet world now is either "shout into the void, but collectively!" or "hide behind anonymity being an asshole", Jul was (and still is) an actually "community".

Can't believe that this place is 10 years old. I'll list some things that were around or weren't around back then

Blockbuster video was around

Circuit City was around

Football music would not be identified as a distinct genre for another 10 years (It would be identified as a genre on Jul's birthday)

Walmart did not have grocery pickup.

I don't necessarily think that the anonymity part of that matters; it's been shown time and time again that it doesn't actually matter that much, and that people are more than willing to put their real name in front. I would instead suggest that it's a lack of moderation, and that without moderation, an environment that encourages and produces assholes flourishes. (You see that on Twitter and Facebook especially.)

IDK, I feel it's scary that TCRF is approaching the 8 year mark. I've been around TCRF since 2011 and even though my contributing days are pretty much over (too busy), it's weird how the time just passed.

@Pokemonmaster1000
I personally miss RadioShack which only recently went under. I always loved strolling in there and looking through all the digital/analog components and stuff. That being said, I think I understand why it went under.

I can say that I would have been a lot less willing to contribute to TCRF if I had been required to attach my real name to my account. It actually goes beyond TCRF and my reasoning is simple. It's not to be mischievous but because I don't see the reason to attach a real identity to something I consider a fun hobby.

To be specific, I meant that I don't think that being anonymous is a requirement to being an asshole.
