I'm making a thread for this because it's full of fun stuff to talk about.

An old Sega Channel development disc from 1996 has recently been released (Hidden Palace link). It's full of source files, several menu test ROMs, ...and a couple Daggerfall demos for some reason. But there's a bunch of other interesting stuff too...

First of all, two "new" Mega Drive games!? Presumably these were exclusive to the Japanese Sega Channel and I'm pretty sure they never seen the light of day since. I can barely find any mention of these online.

"NYUSHI.BIN" (入試直前チェック難問奇門危機解決) is some sort of educational quiz game. "PLANET.BIN" (プラネットメッセージクイズ) is... some sort of astronomy/astrology-related thing. I've already made a page for one of them. (Also, a copy of that mysterious "Game Can Special" is in there too.)

Second, three SC-exclusive versions of Primal Rage! ("PRIMALCN.SGA", "PRIMALRG.SGA", "PRIMALTD.SGA") These have been documented a little on the game page.

Third... a potentially early version of Yuu Yuu Hakusho: Makyou Toitsusen? There are references to a "YU_YU" file on the disc... the problem is the actual BIN file isn't there. But the "GI" folder holds files that are... based on the ROMs? I don't know if they're compressed, truncated, corrupted or what but they don't boot in an emulator. But the files do have (messy unformatted) ROM headers and the one in "YU_YU.GI" is dated a month earlier than the final version and the "GM" code is copied from Gunstar Heroes. I don't know what could be done with this.

Fourth, after comparing the rest of the ROMs of retail-released games with existing ROM dumps, the only other one that's different seems to be Kyuukai Douchuuki (KYUUKAI.BIN). No idea what's different but it's mostly some changes in the first half of the ROM.

So yeah, a whole lot of goodies in here.

I'd like to correct rabidabid on Daggerfall here. There's only one Daggerfall demo and it's the same November 1995 one already on the wiki. It's just split in two files. Remember, that demo was compiled before the Internet had any speed, so splitting it like this was needed for it to download at all. Still, nice to see its original files for distribution.

Also, the menu ROMs are likely the actual menus used during service and we've never seen these in more than two decades, so this is nice.

The .O directory is full of game descriptions and tips.

There's also the Sierra 68k assembler, which is quite a historical treat, as this was used by several American developers for their Genesis games.

That file at least (probably the rest too) definitely looks like it's compressed. The "missing" chunks are all stuff that already showed up earlier in the ROM and all chunks of data seem to have two bytes in a particular format before them. No idea exactly which compression format is this, though.

LZSS, but operating on 16-bit words instead of 8-bit bytes.

So it can potentially be salvaged? I wouldn't mind looking at it since it's one of my fav MD games. I have no idea how to go about decompressing it though.

I'm guessing these "GI" files might be what was actually sent through the service to cut down on loading/transfer times?

Also I started making a list of games listed in the menu ROMs just for the hell of it.

I've managed to decompress YU_YU.GI and get a working ROM out of it, so I'd say yes. I'm still working on the .SA files, but I suspect those are the same thing with a slightly different format.

Double post because the .SA files were a lot easier to work with than I thought they would be.

Here's the decompression tools, go nuts. (Windows x64, command-line.) Source code too.

Let me know if you have any questions or spot a file that isn't decompressing properly.

Yeeess, thank you!! This really is an early version of Makyou Toitsusen.

At a glance this is the same version I made a prerelease page for a while ago. Very nice!

EDIT: Oh my god... track 80 (and many others) in the sound test is SMOOTH CRIMINAL ripped from Michael Jackson's Moonwalker... what the hell lmao

I suspect the .GI files were for the General Instrument version and the .SA files were for the Scientific Atlanta version. Both file formats seem to specify load addresses, which makes sense if the data was to be decompressed to a specific location in RAM (e.g. so the same compressed file format can be used for menu data and game ROMs).

There's some other data in the file headers that I haven't figured out at all. Perhaps a disassembly of those two BIOS ROMs would be enlightening...

Okay so I started a page for the YYH proto. It's over here.

There are a whole bunch of unused graphics in the game that were cleaned out of the final release. Initially I assumed these were random things cut from the game, but upon closer inspection, these are actually from different games. Seems like this build was written over top of other stuff.

At the end of Kuwabara's tile set seems to be a spindash animation. I'm guessing this is Sonic because in the next graphics bank...

...it's Tails! Specifically his overworld sprites from Sonic Crackers! These are at the end of Yusuke's tile set.

Next is this at the end of Hiei's bank. I can't really tell what this is supposed to be, at least with the palettes I have going...

This is at the end of Sensui's bank. No idea what this is from but it's a little guy.

More little guy at the end of Jin's bank.

Huh, seriously?

Crackers sure showed up in a lot of places.

This is a newer set of graphics though, as Tails has several more frames of animation.

Here's the same bank, but with the proper palette for Tails.

Worth noting that there are a lot of new frames here that did not exist in the Crackers prototype we have. We just need to properly piece these together.

I think this is right. Didn't include sprites that were already in Sonic Crackers.

I managed to eke out something resembling human in that one blob of graphics and it's...

... Shiva and Ash from Bare Knuckle III.

Also the new Hidden Palace page for the game says it has data for (a prototype version of) J.League Pro Striker 2, and sure enough...

I didn't get why he looked so weird at first, and then it hit me: The front and back-facing frames are missing the little tuft of fur on his forehead!

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
