Finished. I was gonna colour it but I can't seem to get that to work very well in Procreate with the way I've done this so… meh.

EDIT: colour

Watched the MGS episode of Boundary Break, felt the need to draw a little Meryl.

I was going to line all around, and then wondered… why? The foot (which is sketchy and kind of not properly defined anyway) isn't actually the focus of the drawing. Your eye shouldn't be drawn to it.

However, I probably shouldn't have left it as the ONLY part of the drawing that is that sketchy. If I was properly trying to achieve that look where only the focal point of the drawing is properly detailed, I should have left a whole lot more looking sketchy/roughly painted.

Also I don't seem to know how to draw that foot right now oops

Also, thanks! I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!

I think my eyes are just drawn to it because it's an area of high contrast (light foot, dark background). The eye also tends to follow it (head -> baby -> further down the diagonal, the shoe).

Yeah, that means I should go over it with a nice fuzzy airbrush and deepen the shadows more, to bring that focal point back up. It doesn't necessarily make sense from a lighting point of view, but it does compositionally now you mention it.

If I can be bothered.

So you can either airbrush it, or airbrush it off.

I'm considering it, but not at the moment.

For the past 6 months (nearly 7) the baby has been FAR too demanding for me to even consider it. However, I'm told that very soon he should start consolidating his sleep--reliably--into one long nap in the morning and one long nap in the afternoon.

That will mean *free time*!

But then I also need to figure out how to actually offer commissions because I don't actually know how to do things like take payments, price my work, or deal with the ATO and Centrelink.

If I had any tips I'd give 'em. I wonder if any frameworks exist to help out with the process? I only know many artists use Paypal's services and just make it a direct thing through that. I don't know if they count it as a taxable income or anything. Since it's like, barely anything until you get into hundreds.

Yeah, I figured PayPal was likely on the cards, but I remember reading that there are some possible pitfalls to look out for when you're not shipping something physical.

As for the Centrelink stuff, we now know they can at least try to spy on you, looking for welfare fraud. I'm not actually receiving payments, but I should probably look into how even small amounts of money affect the Family Tax Benefit thingy (I need to understand how this works generally actually).

The other thing I considered is Patreon, but then ho boy, I really have to be able to create regularly!

The only thing with Paypal is that commissioners need to check "digital goods" so that the system knows there's nothing to ship, and does not expect physical shipments to occur.

Also patreon is definitely not the way to go if you just want to do short bursts of commissions then take breaks. Patreon expects you to produce something over timeframes. And perks based on payment levels. Some artists do 'commission lotteries' though for higher price brackets.

That PayPal thing is good to know.

This post is partly for my own reference later, when I come back to this, but some very preliminary research on things shows that it's "Family Tax Benefit Part B" I am concerned about. I need to find its actual eligibility requirements somewhere…

I think I have to face the fact that I am not going to have time to do commissions for the foreseeable future.

The baby's naps are NOT getting better. I'm not getting free time. And now I have a major legal problem looming over everything, sucking up whatever time I'm not already spending on childcare, cooking, or cleaning.

It was a nice thought, I guess, but I was foolish to think it would get easier.

Opportunistic doodle of my foot.

There's a lady on Instagram whose little one is a little older than mine and she is managing to draw often and I am wondering how she is managing to do that but it's kind of giving me a little bit of hope.
