7 days from now, at 11PM EST on January 12, the Nintendo Switch presentation will go live and we'll finally know more about the Switch and the games coming out for it. Here are some links:

Who's going to be watching? What are you looking forward to? Any predictions? What's your hype level!?

As for me, I hope that BOTW will be a launch game for the Switch. It's the game I'm hyped up the most for, and it'll be really annoying to have it get delayed again. I hope the Mario Kart rerelease will have more tracks and characters than MK8. We haven't really seen much about that new 3D Mario, but I really hope it's more of an open world adventure like Sunshine and SM64. I also really hope the old rumors about a Pokemon Stars turn out to be true.

I won't be watching it since I'll be at work but I'll definitely check what news the event generated once I get home. I really like the versatility of going from a console to a handheld and back. Although, truth be told, I'd really use it more like a handheld than anything. My hype level is just in the middle. I'm not excited but I can't say that I'm not interested either.

At the end of the day, I want to see what games get released for it. The only title that I've seen so far that I could care about is Zelda.

Edit:
Just reread when this starts. Thought it said 11 AM, not PM. I might be up to watch it. We'll see.

Like someone else said somewhere else before (can't find exactly where it was posted so it might be a bit misquoted) :

at this point Zelda has been delayed so much I wouldn't mind they delay another time just to prevent rushing it in in the last few days in case they do that

I am excited to watch the stream, however, the Switch has been kept a bit more secretive than other Nintendo consoles (even with leaks here and there) so it'll be nice to see what they'll announce.

I'm totally ready.

I'm excited for the possibilities, I suppose? I've been following the leaks and rumors the last few weeks almost religiously, but I'm pretty sure there's gonna be some surprises.

As for Zelda, I assume it's gonna be their heavy hitter launch title, maybe with a couple WiiU ports and that new Mario game they showed off, just so we can get a home run in terms of games on launch. I remember reading a while back that most of Nintendo's internal and second-party teams have pretty much been radio silent since their last major releases, which has me wondering what's on the horizon.

I took off this Friday just so I could be home for that treehouse presentation. I am so hyped right now!

I really hope they announce a new Fire Emblem game for the Switch, that would be amazing :o

Why did this thread die? I was expecting a little bit of discussion after the Switch presentation.

I wasn't awake to watch the presentation in full. I basically just went to Nintendo's website and did a quick scroll through the game section for the Switch.

35 games listed here

There could be more interesting titles in the batch but these are the games that easily stood out to me:

-Mario Odyssey
-Splatoon 2
-Zelda: BotW
-Puyo Puyo Tetris

Of those four, I'd say Zelda looks the most interesting.

Am I convinced enough to buy a Switch? Eh... IDK. Maybe I'll get one further down the line but I'm not feeling it to buy one at launch. We'll see.

Everyone was too busy hunting for a Switch or Zelda BOTW Master Edition yesterday Like me, for example I was able to get the Switch and the special edition of BOTW preordered, but that Master Edition went out of stock in like 5 minutes! :/

I'm most hyped for:

-Mario Odyssey
-Zelda: BOTW
-Fire Emblem Warriors
-Xenoblade Chronicles 2

But I'll also probably be getting Skyrim, Project Octopath Traveler, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

That's a ton of games for one year; some people seem disappointed, but I'm ecstatic! There's also a Fire Emblem direct coming up on the 18th!

Fire emblem warriors could be nice, I liked the Hyrule warriors, though I feel the adventure mode was perhaps a bit too grindy with quite a few boring missions and not enough map variety.

Mario Odyssey looks nice, but it also looks like it'll be "just another mario game". It's not that new mario games don't bring anything new to table, but at this point I feel it's very easy to tell exactly what will be in a new mario game. It's most likely going to be a great game, but it just doesn't exited me in any way.

The only game out of the bunch that I found interesting was Zelda BotW, which is great for me since I can just get that on the Wii U instead, you know, the system I purchased two years ago basically for playing Zelda on. ;

IDK, the info that has poped up in the presentation and afterwards just paints an image of a system that is very unattractive to me. I generally prefer PC or handheld these days, and the 2,5-6h battery life is kind of a death sentence for using the switch in any large capacity as a handheld, at least for me. The base price for the system is not too absurd, but replacement parts and other things around it seem extremely expensive. Online stands out as the big problem. Having to pay in a subscription based fashion to play games online is something I criticise on other system, but on the Switch I'd wager it's a even worse deal.

Nintendo has already had historically horrible online services, and I doubt that'll change in any meaningful capacity. But the truth of the matter is that there aren't too many games coming out for nintendos systems that sells online as their main feature. The first year of the Switch looks promising in that regard at least with splatoon 2 and Mariokart 8/8 edition. But then what? I doubt we are going to see the latest CoD, etc, on the Switch. I'm questioning the value of the proposition. Personally I'm of the opinion that if you buy a game where online play is one of the major components then you have already payed for that service. If the itself game needs to cost extra to support that then fine, but requiring an online subscription service too? No way (It's not like Nintendo is paying and offering themselves as an ISP ). AFAIK, it's not as if MS hands out part of the profits from their online service plan to third parties to help pay for their server costs for their games. I could be wrong, but from what I know it's just another way to get money and basically offering nothing in return. And I doubt Nintendo will be different in that regard. This also means that if pokemon as a series moves to the switch system then just basic online trading and casual battling would require a subscription.

In order to make the deal better Nintendo are offering a NES or SNES game per month for subscribers. I would argue that this is not really worth much at all. Despite there being plenty of great NES and SNES games on the VC library, I do find them to be terribly over priced due to their age. This offer alone is highlights another problem with Nintendo in general: No account based purchases, sort of. Meaning that if you have already bought a VC game on one system you need to buy it again if you want it on another. It makes sense, but old consoles gets obsolete, and asking people to pay a premium for old games and constantly have to re-purchase them? Well, let's just say that peoples eyes will be drawn to much better solutions for getting their fix. While I don't think so myself, due to the wording of the deal there are those who claim that the NES/SNES game you get is basically only for rental for that one month before you lose it, which makes it an even shittier benefit for being a subscriber.

YMMV, of course. But what info has been released about the switch paints the image of a very unattractive system, despite the neat gimmick of being a mix of portable and home console. Sorry for the rant~

Lunaria, the Wii U is a Zelda machine. OoT and MM on virtual console, TWW and TP got HD remakes, SS is also on the eshop, soon to add BOTW.

Sadly, that amount of battery life is the standard in handhelds now. Look at the iterations of the 3DS. You get like 7 hours of 3DS gameplay at most when you turn brightness settings all the way down with no 3D and no wifi. The Vita gets like 6 hours of playtime. It's a battle between hardware power and battery technology.

Yeah, I know. But the thing about the 2,5-6h estimate is that high end games (like zelda botw) will be around the 2,5h end of the scale. I don't use the 3D effect on my 3DS because I don't think it adds much, and it hurts my eyes, but with it off and brightness around the middle (which is what I prefer) I get at least 4,5h on high end games on that system, but often times more. And I find this to be basically as low as I can stand. The New 3DS line offers a slight battery upgrade.

It's neat that we can cramp such nice hardware down to such a small size that it's portable these days, but if battery can't keep up then it's basically killing off the main use I'd have for the device. :c

I honestly think the 3DS and new 3DS is in a good spot for hardware for handling handheld games, sure I'd love to see improvements over time with new tech, but only if battery keeps up. Graphically I can't really complain about the outings on the 3DS line. But then, I never was one to care too much about graphical fidelity.

The battery life doesn't concern me too much. The 3DS is not that different -- I only get about 4-5 hours on my 3DS anyway. They said 3-6 hours I believe for the Switch, so I think it's close enough. Also, it's USB-C, and power banks are everywhere now, so I don't think the battery life is an issue to me.

Lunaria, did you see this video showing off some gameplay for that Mario game? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTvAQcQo3iE

I'm super hyped for it! Also I don't know what you mean by not bringing anything new -- we've been stuck with the same themed worlds for years (grassland, desert, water, forest, mountain, sky, bowser...) and this seems to be something really unique, kind of like Super Mario Galaxy.

Mmm, I haven't seen that specific video before, but I did see the trailer in the presentation. Maybe it was unclear, but I do think new mario games bring new things to the table. 3D World had plenty of interesting new ideas, same with galaxy one and two. And really, I do think the game is going to be great. My point was more that Mario games expand in a very predictable way these days, and I don't think anything in mario odyssey is going to surprise me. Mario games have just seemingly gotten rather predictable in how they end up, maybe that's cynical of me but it does make it a whole lot less interesting for me.

Also, I had an interesting thought now when I saw that video to, does this mean that mario is canonically a dwarf? It was hard to make that case before when there were basically only three or so people before and one could make the argument for artistic leeway. But now there is a whole city of people walking around, etc. If this is intentional meant to be this way then I personally think it's great, there aren't really that many dwarf main characters in media, or really shown much at all. :p

I'm really not digging the local price of this. It has been Australia taxed hard, hard enough that I'm not gonna pick it up early unless I come into a pile of money. Better off waiting for a bundle, sale or my wife to splurge on Splat2n.
