as long as you are discreet about it and y'know, don't share a screenshot of you using an alternative client directly with Discord staff, they don't really do much of anything (at least, not currently)

someone i know has been using an alt discord client forever and has faced 0 consequences from it to this day

it is against their ToS but they seem to be chill about it (at the moment)

yeah, unless you're userbotting you probably won't get banned, i've never known anyone that was killed for using custom clients who didn't abuse them (and api abuse is bannable if you're on the official client anyway)

Almost entirely sure that that does not count as abuse, because I know someone who has coded their own alternative client without typing notifications and for years Discord has not even cared.

I'm pretty sure sending too many requests in a row (specially if you do it faster than humans normally would be able to) counts though.

the obvious thing would be continuing to try and use the api when ratelimited

pretty sure they don't care about typing notifications and stuff like that, it's only if you're doing something noticeable (and depending on what that is, you can get banned regardless of client)

the official client scans all your processes all the time (can be disabled in settings, and is claimed to not be sent anywhere)

if you don't disable targeted advertising it sends what games you open (at the very least), and even if you turn it off it still sends the info, discord just says it gets ignored serverside

I'm not sure where else to put this, as I don't feel like making an entire thread for what is essentially a discord specific post is conducive to the general forum discussion, so here goes.

I just want to apologise for what was clearly shitty behaviour and lack of respect for boundaries over my past few years of interactions with you guys. I’ve been in extensive therapy over the past few months and have been actively transitioning gender as well and feel that I need to apologise for my absolutely shitty behaviour. I completely take responsibility for it and have over the past few months been taking some serious action towards making myself a better person, respecting others' boundaries and above all, not talking about myself so much and being less of a narcissist in general.

I know I might never truly be able to undo said behaviour’s effect on my reputation, and I also know I probably don’t deserve any more chances in people’s eyes. But I’m willing to just come back to observe and occasionally participate in a respectful manner, with certain channels muted and hidden via betterdiscord, for example. I really do value the conversations and people involved in them in the server, and I do want to apologise to everyone in a more general capacity at some point too.

If the admin team doesn’t feel it appropriate, I can’t pretend I wouldn’t be disappointed, but I would completely understand. I just ask that if that is the case, you relay a general apology on my behalf, and then we shall part ways.

look... my genuine apologies, but i gotta be blunt with you: it's not happening.
the last time you asked to return to the discord,
you basically claimed the exact same improvements in your life...
only to almost immediately return to the exact same pattern of behavior once invited back in.
you overshared repeatedly, made basically everyone you interacted with uncomfortable,
constantly vented outside of the vent channel,
talked about *extremely* upsetting topics in said vent channel repeatedly,
and... generally speaking, it was a really bad time.

your ban remains standing;
i really hope you are able to get the help you need, and i sympathize with your problems,
but we are not therapists, and we absolutely cannot provide that kind of help.

Fair enough, I mainly come back to try and at least clear the air, attempt to mend things, or at the least get a definitive response anyway. Given I have actual professional help now, I wasn't even going to mention any of that sort of stuff. I'll be honest, I wasn't being entirely sincere the past few times, which probably is a large factor in your decision. But hey, I guess I misjudged just how bad my reputation was here.

Regardless, it's all okay, I'll find somewhere else to talk tech where I don't have so much baggage, especially consdering that was one of the main reasons I wanted to return, to hang out in an LGBTI+ friendly techspace, I was legitimately going to leave all my emotional baggage at the door, given I now have the professional help I need. Once again, I really do apologise about all of this, and I respect your decision and understand that it's not only about protecting the other people in the community, but also ultimately in my own best interest. It's definitely one I would have made in the same position, and I at least appreciate the honesty. It may not have been the message I wanted, but I believe it will be the message I needed.

I wish you all a happy pride month, and shall our paths cross again, I sincerely hope that we're all in a much better place.
