I feel like people boast their 50Mbps or 100Mbps connection as if it was a perfectly normal thing, and France is way behind in that regard.
Living in a shitty place doesn't help. Shit Telecom theoretically provides 2Mbps, the actual speed depends on their mood. Generally it's acceptable, but it can be really terrible (as in, Youtube switches to 144p and even then it gets buffering pauses). But that's not the best part. The best part is their epic stability. Who thinks that random 3-5 minute disconnects are acceptable? Apparently, they think so. I don't really get it, either. Even something like my phone's internet is perfectly stable if given a reasonable signal (and 20Mbps if given a 4G signal). Eh. I will move to a better place this summer, hopefully getting me a better connection ![]() How about you guys? |

As I mentioned quite some times in the past, I consider the connection I have pretty slow.
I mean, even though it's still better than some years ago, what I have today is still not exactly wonderful. It's still stable (except in some random days when it promptly drops around mid-day for whatever reason) unlike the phone, which is atrociously bad and is never stable. ugh While I'm now amazed there is even worse out here (Italy is a place with very bad connection speed in general), that doesn't excuse in any way what Telecom offers here . |

still better than mine, eh
regarding the phone, I need to try it again since I changed providers, maybe it's more or less stable/fast (and maybe it doesn't go through the same kind of proxy that completely defeats the purpose of caching) |

probably the same thing here, considering we have another line from another ISP and it's not really better (except a top speed of 5Mbps)
our primary ISP (Shit Telecom) also owns the phone lines and all that they have also tried to abuse their ownership of telephone poles to cockblock fiber operators, but eventually that was resolved and fiber is getting installed... it's not happening anytime soon though seeing how it's going |

I measured my phone's connection (with a good 4G signal) and got 35Mbps down, 17Mbps up; that's a fairly big upload speed
haven't had a chance to test stability yet, though dad asked for fiber, but seeing the rate at which it's going (and how professional the fiber company is, apparently sending emails that contradict eachother...), I probably won't get to enjoy it before I move out |

(I was going to post this 6 hours ago, but I had to "fix" a motherboard issue, yay crappy computers)
![]() ![]() My ISP is bad, but I never saw it as too terrible (even though it is according to the majory of people). The connection is mostly stable at least. Apparently there is also a download/upload limit I guess? But I never really noticed it. I can watch, or rather, could watch YouTube videos up to 480p without a problem, but now that we have Netflix instead of cable TV (too costly), nope. ![]() Haven't tested mobile, but it isn't very stable here either way (using any of the five providers). There was also a monopoly over here, like +5 years ago, from a company called Telefonica which also owned all of the phone lines (they still do, but they now have another brand name and also aren't as bad as before). It was very common for the internet to be unstable. They provided dial-up (what we used) and "Speedy", which was 1Mbps for a very high price (or 2Mbps for an even higher price). EDIT: Ignore that it says "Embratel", my ISP is actually NET "Virtua" (the companies merged). |

And I thought Shit Telecom was bad... dial-up in 2010 is fucking terrible. That's a good example why monopoly is a bad thing. |

Seeing some of the Speedtest results in here, I think I'm thankful for what I have right now:
![]() It's not great, but also not that terrible; the <=1Mbps upload speed is the worst part, really. I could switch to some other ISP or even just a different plan with my current DISABLED_one, but then the question would be what specific terms other plans have (ex. transfer and/or speed limits). This DISABLED_one's internet access is an unlimited flat rate, with landline telephony having alright prices per minute, and I'm not really using the phone much anyway. |

![]() (this) It's nice and stable, but also a bit expensive (+$30/month for unlimited bandwidth, for a total of $105 + taxes) ... the basic cheap plan is 5/1 and 20GB/month ![]() But after going through 2 years of cheap shared 8/1 (in 2010-2012) and 2 weeks of 5/0.6 (after a move in 2014), it's worth the price ![]() |

I should note that I frequently mistype Comcast as Cocmast, so I legitimately wonder if there's some subconscious stuff going on around that little quirk of mine. |

![]() It's currently thunderstorming and the connection is being sillier than normal, but this is what I have to put up with on an average day since the copper failed and the Telco wouldn't replace it. |

last time I had measured the speed at univ, I had ~45Mbps down, although that was with ethernet hijacked on my laptop...
I tested it on one of their computers, and man, they have fucking gigabit |

The internet here isn't that bad, despite occasional complaints. It's mostly just that the router we have likes acting up ![]() I don't have a speed result, but it's pretty comparable to most of the stuff here. Certainly sufficient for streaming... |

![]() This was shared between three people who watch streams and/or play online video games. If it were just for me, a quarter of this would more than enough. |
