It's never been easier!

You'll get permanent custom firmware, which enables you to run emulators and some neat games. There's a ScummVM port and it's super great (I'm gonna play Loom and Monkey Island and Humongous Entertainment games on it). But Gameboy or Mega Drive also work really well.

Besides emulators there's a lot of utility stuff. You can use custom themes, which is pretty cool. You can dump 3DS and DS cartridge saves, which is really useful. There's a Doom port (two, actually, but devin has abandoned his). And... I guess you can pirate very easily if that's what you're into.

But can you still use the E-Shop and other crap? D:

I used to own a flash cart for the DS lite and I really got much use out of it. But I haven't really adapted that approach for the 3DS, it never seemed to get very refined. Maybe I'm just disconnected from the scene too much, but that's the perspective I have had.

My 3DS has custom firmware and it accesses the e-shop just fine.

However, I'm not so sure the "it's never been easier" thing is not sarcasm, because when I did it it took me the entirety of a day to complete the whole process. (The guide really needs to be condensed into what tools and utilities you should get first because as it is they're spread out over every step.)

There are no downsides at all - you can still access the eshop and buy games regularly (in fact I bought Streetpass Fishing after cracking my 3DS).

And yeah, the process... it is sort of lengthy. It took me like six hours. But it's not gonna get much easier, unfortunately.

The process to downgrade is a pain from what I can tell. I was lucky enough to come across 3DSs that were below the 9.2 limit so setting up emuNAND wasn't too bad once I knew how to do so.

Booting into emuNAND is always a pain though. There are a few ways I have been doing it. Of course there is Ninjhax but it kind of sucks always having to have that cart around. There is an internet exploit that will boot into rxTools. There is also homemenuhax but I was never able to boot anything beside homebrew or region free with that. It's a shame too because you can directly boot into that hack by holding L once it is installed.

I will say, from a hacking/TCRF standpoint, NTR CFW is something nice to install. It allows you to take screenshots of whatever is on your screen at the moment. Good for documenting. No idea why Nintendo could not implement this feature (no, taking screenshots of the homescreen or while in Miiverse don't count). NTR also let's you debug (memory editor and such) whatever is running in memory. There are a few features that are *new* 3DS exclusive such as setting breakpoints and streaming what you are playing to your computer. I'd Google NTR if you have yet to check it out.

Oh, and upgrade your SD card to something bigger. That 2/4 GB SD card that comes with the 3DS will just slow you down in the future.

There's a better technique today called arm9loaderhax. With it you can boot into a fully exploited system without EmuNAND, and the boot rate is 100%. It is a bit of a pain to set up though.

The process of getting arm9loaderhax going is quite long, but it's worth it and shouldn't lead to any bricks as long as you follow the instructions perfectly, at the very least for the downgrading parts - i.e. once a9lh itself is installed, I don't think it's as critical anymore to follow step-by-step. Although, I have to admit, I haven't a9lh'd my main 3DS yet, but instead a slightly broken one a friend of mine gave me for free (ex. 3D slider doesn't always turn 3D off anymore).

But yeah, add ex. AuReiNand (or, uh, "Luma3DS" now?) and you can boot into an exploited SysNAND on the latest system version, with firmware write-protection (i.e. so that a9lh doesn't get removed on a system update), with 100% boot rate and much quicker booting than ex. EmuNAND via menuhax and rxTools. Before going the arm9loaderhax route, this 3DS took 30-35 seconds from power on, through menuhax and rxTools, into EmuNAND, now it's less than 15 sec through AuRei/Luma3DS into exploited SysNAND.

You can still use EmuNAND if you want to and keep the SysNAND on 9.2, but I'd say there's not much of a need for that anymore these days, plus using SysNAND makes some things more convenient, like ex. running GBA and DSiWare, as you don't have to install these into both NAND anymore.

I might be willing to get some custom firmware on my 3DS, especially if it could enable me to play games outside my region. The rest is nice, but being able to play imported games from the US or Japan would be something that would be very very useful to me.

The bricking risk is a bit of a pain, but I have soft-modded both my Wii and PSP before, so I have some experience with it.

Got up to the TinyFormat part and the SD got stuck in the o3DS. 7/11 would hack again.

I'll softmod when it's not risky because while I do want to play Culdcept 3D I also don't want to risk a bricked console

First time hearing about arm9loaderhax. I'll have to google that up and see what it offers.

Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, I did this on the spare 3DS we had once my wife upgraded to a N3DS.

It's pretty neat, although I'm mostly using it as a glorified GBA at the moment.

The process is really long though, easy, just...long. Took me two entire afternoons to do, just because of how long NAND dumps/restores take. And because I didn't have a large enough SD card the first day (protip: the default 2GB 3DS card is too small, you'll want an 8GB at minimum).

it's fun to see what the scene has become, though

I have been there during the early days, and for a while Gateway was the only way to get homebrew until Ninjhax was released

I should definitely look into the newer hax and all, though-- my 3DS is still on 4.5, and I'm probably missing out on things (like HANS), but eh, motivation :/

I'm glad I did this.

It's simple, but a very involved process. Took me quite a few hours to complete the hacking process, although the tutorial was quite instructive.

Too bad I barely touch the system. Alas, one more device I have better control of.

Has the guide evolved at all? The biggest problem was that every step has its own "download this" list, and it often included stuff you were supposed to have gotten already, and even worse linked to pages instead of directly to downloadable versions. (Lots of fun around april 1, when a lot of crap was "released")

Well, the latest update, 11.0, breaks homebrew (temporarily) and downgrades (possibly forever), so it's now or never

It has improved in small amounts. The author claims he can't maintain a zip of all releases, but it might happen later when the process is refined and stable versions of everything are out.

Due to 11.0 breaking downgrades, there's two options:
  1. When the guide says to update to latest, don't.

  2. Use a firmware.bin from 10.7 and use that with Luma3DS.

I personally did 1. on my n3DS and it worked fine. After installing a9lh, you can update to latest safely after restoring the original sysNAND image as in the guide.

After one friend nearly bricked from this and another actually did despite doing nothing wrong, I cannot in good conscience recommend people to do this. Be careful!
