So I got Wii U access, yay!

All I have is Mario Maker right now. My roommate and I agreed that we're going to be real bastards to each other and make the hardest levels for each other we can possibly make. I'm going more the "psychological" approach.

Here's my first level, "Pave My StationWagon". Have fun! I know I did watching my roommate suffer.

Stranded Pikmin Learn to Leap
(9909-0000-015D-D52B)

Three Pikmin fall off the side of a cliff near the end of the day! They’ll need to learn all about how to jump in order to hop through a clearing, traverse a cavern and find shelter before dusk.

Yeah, it's a remake of an earlier level of mine. I was always disappointed by how easy it was up until the checkpoint at which point it suddenly demands a perfect running jump, but making a level without vertical scrolling or a sub-area was very limiting, so I thought I'd try and smooth out the difficulty curve.

It's still a no-enemy obstacle course level, which is pretty difficult to make in SMB1 without all the fancy spinjumps and air stalls and walljumps from future games. People who play Mario games a lot shouldn't have trouble with this level (up until the optional reach-the-top-of-the-flagpole challenge, at least) because I designed the level with the idea of having someone who barely knows how to play gradually learning about the limits of stationary jumps, walking jumps, running jumps, mid-jump acceleration...

I also took the opportunity to include some references to my earlier Olimar level, haha.

edit 2: no plans on completing it. it's not fun. sorry if i'm being too harsh, but this encompasses a lot of what makes me skip levels in 100 Mario and it's stuff i see too much that, in my eyes, disrespects the player.

edit 3: though you said syobon whatever is your inspiration, so if making a jerk level and not one that's necessarily fun is your intention, then more power to you

Yeah. I played through the whole level. A lot of things, I felt I needed to be psychic to get past. The Megaman vertical spikes are the worst. Especially the spikes at the bottom you wouldn't know was there until the very last second. I like the puzle element with the P-Switches, but the process of dropping you off into doom with every single stop gets exhausting.

You got puzzle potential! Stick with a theme (Other than make it trollish) and you'll do fine.

Well the "trolling" part is kinda hit right on the head, as that's what our roomie and I have been doing with each other in these levels. I get it ain't everyone's cup of tea though. Is cool! Guess it's gotta be one of those certain mindsets. I wasn't trying to hide it, but I guess I really understated it all. Sorry 'bout that.

I'll make a more serious attempt sometime in the future once I get some ideas. I'll evolve out of this phase and everything will be honky-dory.

It's been a while, but I finally made another course. A few weeks ago, a friend of mine noticed that pipes and doors reset a lit Bob-omb's fuse. And so...

This one is meant to be challenging but fair. I designed it so that you don't need to have perfect platforming skills to be able to complete it.

Luca kept bringing up the idea of taking one's courses and blending them into a Remix Level of sorts, and I was eventually convinced to try it out myself. I mean, considering this is about my 21st level or so, it's not like I'm missing sources to draw inspiration from... But trying to include bits from every single level would mean I'd have less than one screen per level, so in true Rhythm Heaven fashion I picked four levels to base this remix on.

Can you guess which four they are? =P

This is only tangentially related, but...

In an interview/Q&A with the developers about Super Mario Maker, one of the questions they answered was why the game uses New Super Mario Bros. physics for all four game styles, rather than recreating each game's physics faithfully. Their answer was that when they tested the other game physics, the players realized that the old physics were more difficult than they had remembered.


After playing Super Mario Advance 4 on Wii U virtual console, I definitely see what they mean.

So I started trying to get to work a simple project of trying to re-make Parapa Palace from Zelda II.

Unfortunately space limitations are currently making me its bitch. I'm currently trying to figure out how to work around them at the moment, as I have to cram about four more screens worth of content in, for starters. I've already shrunk down some hallways but even that's not enough at the moment.

As ugly as it's going to be, I might have to sneak in a door somewhere instead of having an actual elevator to the basement level. It's making my perfectionist sense twinge.

I'll figure it out over making some more troll levels for my roommate.

It's been three weeks since I've played SMM but I've been incredibly dissatisfied with the boss from my Crusher-Ship Infestation level, so today I went back and tried a different idea for it (while also adjusting a few other things in the main level). Could people check out both versions and give some feedback?

Old one is still F047-0000-019B-39DF;
new one is 6020-0000-01C2-F910.

I'd give you much more detailed feedback but, uh, you don't own the game. Still, even though the level's fairly obviously a 'my first level' with a lot of experiments but without a cohesive theme to the level, I do like how you don't punish the player with a death pit if they fail the jumps near the start, and how you made sure that the last 'puzzle' near the end can't be made impossible.



...Oh yeah, and there's a new Mystery Mushroom skin if you go back through the event courses.

Been experimenting with making autoscrolling levels lately (as unfun people tend to see them), although I only uploaded one. I admit I find them fun as long they scroll fast (I hate the world 8 autoscrolling levels in SMB3 cause how slow they are).

It's probably a bit too easy again, but when you're combining elements people find unfun I admit I tend to err on the side of making it easy.

Also turns out that people really like the Yoshi level I make awhile back, although I'm not sure whenever that's due to it being a good level or due to me encouraging people to comment if they find a (not so hidden) secret.
