Here's an airship I tried making last week: 9F64-0000-0066-6AF7

Didn't know what to name it, so...

I've made a few levels, although my favorite one is an SMB3 styled ghost house that requires the player to use a combination of different items to reach the goal. It seems really short at first, although it may take you a few tries to put all of the pieces together!

Seems there's an update out for the game, and it is required for connecting online. Not really sure what it does.

Anyway, I made one minor stage and one full-fledged stage.

e+ Coro Coro Castle: F519-0000-005F-C471
This one is based on a promotional e-Reader level from Super Mario Advance 4. I had to get creative with replacing some of the elements not available to me (Flurry, vegetables) but I think I pulled it off.

One Way Up: BB37-0000-0063-FBAB
I accidentally discovered an interesting property of one-way walls, and decided to make a whole stage based on it. I put a lot of effort into trying to design it well so that it is a fair challenge.

that's a pretty cool property and it was executed the best when you had two walls oriented against one another, otherwise the platform is a bit small since you can only land on the thing if you're approaching it from the walled off side. it makes situations like these tougher than one-block jump obstacles to navigate through:

hella star tho fo creativity

[edit] I'm constantly falling in the above ground part of the level--a safety net below would be nice because these blocks appear to be thinner than one full 16x16 tile

Um.

Also those spikes and note blocks at the start are a bit too tough... Even though running full speed at them seems to work, there's no room for error

[Edit] I don't even know what to do with the POW block. You need more hints here, somehow
[Edit] figured it out, but getting around on those god awful note blocks ruined the clever concept for me, so I gave up
[edit] there we go. clever, but there's way too much unnecessary difficulty, making moving around/puzzling things out a big chore.

I had this really neat puzzle that used a large Koopa shell to carve a precise path through coins after a P-Switch was hit, but I had to scrap it once I discovered that kicked shells move at a different speed based on how fast Mario is running when he touches one. You could very easily make the puzzle unsolvable just by moving too fast.

I'm kind of starting to loathe the weird quirks and limitations in this game's engine.

Normal Mario games also have different shell speeds for throwing the shell vs. kicking it vs. groundpounding on it (although non-NSMB games may have less possibilities there because some of those actions aren't possible).

In those games, the player's speed doesn't affect the shell's speed, though.

I didn't realize this was a thing until a couple days ago oops.

https://miiverse.nintendo.net/posts/AYMHAAACAAADVHkeKTj6nA

Here's a level I tried making easier than the other 5 death sentences I did. Hopefully that means it's more accessible, both in the difficulty and level sense.

I'll get to play some levels from this thread once I am free from college today.

The whole level is geared towards building you up for that final section there, and requires expert-level precision platforming. If you're getting stuck at the place in the screenshot, here's a tip: it's easier when you're small, and I've made sure to include ways for you to shrink if you grab a mushroom.

Now, I don't have anything to say about my experience with Super Mario Maker, because it is non-existant so far, but I must say, this game is getting a lot of attention. I already know of a few people who bought a Wii U just to play this game, and I've also heard people talking about it in school (which is weird because they generally only care about PS/Xbox). This game is definitely getting attention on the internet too.

I feel like Super Mario Maker has the potential to be one of the main titles of the Wii U, if it isn't already. Who knows, there's a chance Nintendo might actually make the Wii U start selling more now if they are smart. The Wii U hasn't been that successful so far, but hope is the last thing to die. I can already see it passing the Xbox One sales at the very least.

Oh, and by the way, here are the current console sales, taken from this website, last updated on August 29th:

I can't confirm the accuracy of this graph anywhere else though, so there's that too.

If Mario Maker really is that great, who knows?

I would really like to create some levels for it too, but unfortunately I can't do that for a while.

Both of the levels I've made are difficult, but don't let the low clear rates dissuade you.
  • Trampolines and Tortoises (3C5A-0000-0024-88EB)
As the name suggests, the level's theme focuses on springboards, Koopa Troopas, and Paratroopas. Don't forget that holding the jump button increases your bounce height after landing on enemies and springboards.

  • Grinder Galleons (2B4F-0000-0071-5D6A)
Expect to find Grinders, tracks, and platforms in abundance in this level. It may look tricky, but all of the obstacles here can be avoided with the right timing. There are also a couple of secrets. Can you find them both?

097B-0000-007F-8E24 (To the top of the Colossus)

This one's interesting. It started with me having absolutely no inspiration, other than "I should really do more stuff in the SMB3 skin".

This started as an underground level where the point was to just keep going up. I finished the first section, and then was messing around and switched it to the airship theme and noticed it looked 300% cooler that way.

I spent a bunch of time decorating and making it look interesting, and the only reason it ends where it does and how it does is because I ran into the block limit for stages, and had to cut it a little short.

The original plan was that you'd go up to the "top" of the ship and then you'd go back down the other side, but now you just take a little shortcut down. Oh well! It was still fun to do this stage.
