What is your opinion on Windows 10 so far?
Exactly what it says. What is your opinion about Windows 10 so far? Do you have it installed? Would you recommend it? Do you think it is better or worse than older Windows versions?
I installed it and it's good.

The TPM requirement is the one that's causing the mass kerfuffle online right now. That and the processors are 8th gen Intel/2nd gen Ryzen for the cutoff (so roughly 2018).

Makes me wonder why the TPM is needed. Are we going to be in a position where drive encryption is the norm? I'd rather not have to ask people what their 48 digit BitLocker key is that they have no clue about when their mobo pops and they want 10,000 pics of their grandkids back that they have no backup of...

Apparently the TPM 2.0 thing might be a dev testing requirement and they just shipped their dev requirements as their prod requirements because their project managers are freaking out right now and that it's likely to be dropped back to TPM 1.2 or firmware TPM emulation as a minimum for the actual released.

Microsoft may be a megacorporation but they're not stupid.

They've had their moments. The forced W7 -> W10 debacle as well as W8's debut are two things that instantly come to mind.

Hell they had to change their terms during setup so you didn't sue them.

Now that I'm on my computer, I'm having to use Windows 10. So far... I'm not impressed. Everything, from the interface design to the folder navigation and handling of file icons, seems like a step backwards from Windows 7. I'm annoyed that I can't change my computer account's name without also affecting my Microsoft account (which I don't use anyway) and that my main user directory was named "peard" without any choice.

Also, it's weird to me that there is a dedicated special folder for "3D Objects" and that "3D Print" is one of the built-in menu commands. Do they really expect that many people to own 3D printers?

It's possible to register an offline account with Windows 10. They just make it annoying to find inside the installation process. Apparently Windows 11 Pro has similar shenanigans - 11 Home will mandate signing into a Microsoft Account.

when i installed windows 11 pro it didn't require an account if i was disconnected from the internet. can't say for windows 11 home though

Windows 10, and by extension 11, can be just a local account if you unplug from the Internet or if you say 'I don't have Internet' or whatever it is on the bottom left corner when you go to choose your type of Internet during setup...but they did at least give you the option (buried, of course) with the Internet connected on 11 during its setup, I did see that much.

(edit: thing i forgot to mention: Feels like Windows 11 is just going to be something akin to 8.1 or 7 SP1. So the name change feels more like a marketing decision than really an actual new Windows. Windows 10 itself changed many of its icons to look like 11's in an much earlier update so *shrug*)

I'll probably be an early adopter of Windows 11 if only because I literally never use Windows. I've gone for about a year without even booting up to Windows, even if it's completely and utterly broken it hardly matters for me. Plus it'll be cool to see what Microsoft has changed.

Forcing 64-bit seems natural at this point. 32-bit has already reached its age. Forcing a Microsoft Account for Windows 11 Home...I wonder how that will go? Maybe it'll be like 10, but maybe not. Fun fact! I recently realized that 8.1 is also similar to 10 when it comes to that, it will ask you to set up a Microsoft Account or create one, and you have to play detective to find the option to create a local account.

TPM 2.0 and SecureBoot requirement is going to suck, but from what I've heard there's some tinkering you can do with the installation files to make it ignore those requirements and install anyway. I sure hope so! I have a 6th gen Intel, and my father has a Core 2 Quad, so that's definitely below the CPU "requirements".

My motherboard does support both TPM 2.0 and SecureBoot, but I have those disabled as I honestly don't see the point for me. Furthermore, Linux actually complains if I enable TPM, saying "[Firmware Bug]: ACPI region does not cover the entire command/response buffer". So apparently, my motherboard has a faulty implementation of TPM, and I'm already using the latest version so there's nothing I can do about it! Awesome.

I want Linux to become more common place so that it's seen as a viable alternative rather than "hahah, Linux, lol" but it's also true that most non-tech users are probably better off with Windows. I don't see a problem with that, as long as the user has a genuine option of switching to a different OS that's fine by me. Because at that point it comes down to preference, not system functionality and compatibility.

windows 11 is so god awful that i, as a right side taskbar user, will probably just move to windows 10 and linux fully at that point. microsoft continues to be inexplicably awful

Curious. I made that happen with a mouse on Windows 11. Not sure if DWM is losing its mind but...

Basically, if I rotate the mouse around and around for a few seconds, it'll spin up a core on the process as long as you spin the mouse cursor around on the desktop with no windows open. Granted, it was on one screen of three but what was interesting was if I spun it around in an open window or program, say Discord or TweetDeck for examples, it wouldn't spin the processor up nearly as much.

I'm not quite clear on if that's supposed to happen or not but I don't remember a mouse causing a Ryzen 5 3600 to spark nearly that much electricity trying to keep up. I don't get how mouse polling can generate half a core's power.

EDIT: It's part DWM and MOSTLY Explorer.exe, according to Task Manager.

I guess I should've seen this coming but they made it more difficult to change your default browser in W11. Can't even search for 'default browser' now since they've removed that entirely.

I'm of the opinion that that's more of a "tech user annoyance" than an actual problem. Microsoft Edge is just Chromium with a Redmond skin on top of it and considering the nightmare that is actually getting normal people to not fuck up their browsers and computers, having a standards-compliant and relatively sandboxed browser is honestly a good thing.

That being said I also have spent the past six years dealing with the various blends of dipshittery that normal every day computer users have to deal with, and as a result I tend to look at operating system design as a holistic meta-system where you need to give the "power users" the tools they need while also making sure that Jim-Bob Q. Chunderfumble Jr. doesn't turn the PC he needs to use to scan delivery receipts in for 8 hours a day into a nonfunctional bitlockered and adware-packed mess, because while ol' JBQ is getting paid minimum wage to receive packages it's going to cost the big mighty capital three or four times that to go get some non-uniformed dick like myself out there to fix the problem, and it's going to take a few hours, and big mighty capital is going to look at that and wonder who they can fire to make up for it, it's going to be ol JBQ and his friends because big mighty capital hates the littlest of little guys more than anything else.

It may be the weed talking but I guess my point is that making the number one most used operating system on the planet idiotproof while leaving the power user tools available behind the curtain is a genuinely good thing because it makes it more difficult for human error to be used as an excuse for billionaires to ruin the lives of comrades yours and mine alike because the billionaires don't want to settle for having to give up the five hundred grand that would normally be spent on their winter Ferrari.

tl;dr when presented with a complex interface, the average person is likely to accidentally break things in unprecedented ways because the myriad switches have a lot of complex interdependencies (stay tuned for my talk about why programmers are horrible UX designers), and bad people will exploit this to ruin their lives, so condensing the user interface into more simple standard chunks is a good thing

I'm in break-fix for a living. Trust me, with 99% of computer users, you don't want to leave it this way.

With Chrome as popular as it is, I don't need call after call after call after call from people wondering why Chrome can't be their default browser and 'what is Edge, I thought this was Internet Explorer'.
