What is your opinion on Windows 10 so far?
Exactly what it says. What is your opinion about Windows 10 so far? Do you have it installed? Would you recommend it? Do you think it is better or worse than older Windows versions?
I installed it and it's good.

i don't think the current model is sustainable. the way i see it, one of 3 things is gonna happen:

1. microsoft rides out windows 10 until they decide to move away from desktop operating systems (the most probable but also most unfortunate)

2. microsoft realizes their mistakes and creates windows 11 in order to move away from 10's issues, and continues the major release plan

3. microsoft realizes that they're reaching the end in point 1 and open sources windows, instead resorting to their old tactic of getting their name on everything. i'd hope in that case that the source code of older versions would be released

so, today i was trying to uninstall a redundant program on my computer, and i was greeted by this



i hate sounding all tinfoil hatty, but i am absolutely terrified that microsoft is trying to slowly condition people to accept the bottom option as the default. it's already their recommended, which implies it's gonna become the default at some point if it's not already. we're normalizing people not having control over their own computers and telling them it's for their own good! as if malware, sketchy apps, or apps that literally steal money have never shown up in app stores online. the inevitable endpoint is that people are going to accept apps that are, essentially, the same as malware or spyware today, but legitimized because people are going to think "it's on the microsoft store, it must be safe!"

it's deeply disturbing what apple has done to the app industry, and it's even more deeply disturbing that microsoft is following in their footsteps. it shows a complete lack of regard for the end user and a tacit approval of dishonest business practices.

Apple has been moving that way for a long, long time, and even with their successes on that path, they haven't made it there fully yet. So I'm not too worried about it happening with Windows.

I don't think I've posted in this thread yet, so here's my opinion: I think Windows 10 is actually the best version of Windows. Period. I almost said for its time, but even going back to, say, Windows XP which shipped with a firewall that was turned off by default. Or Windows 7 which used a lot of system resources for its day.

But that's not to say there isn't plenty to be annoyed about with Windows 10, and as time goes on, it seems like Microsoft is intent on making it even more obnoxious.

I guess what I'm saying is, Windows 10 is the best Windows, but you should still use something else.

i agree with that, but also Apple is fucking everything up in their own, stupid way, and desktop Linux is still a little slow and crappy and not really all that simple to use (even if it has gotten way better in the last ten years)

ah well. ...

suddenly realizing i kinda miss having a laptop to mess around and install random OSes on ;;

Windows 10 has so many improvements and new features against Windows 7

but I always run into weird obscure hardware issues with it that I never ran into while using Windows 7 or Linux

so I dunno, I like how convenient it is for most users but I like having control over my computer. Windows 7 was a nice compromise between easy-to-use and control options (to me), 10 is not

also I still fully believe Microsoft with turn Windows 10 almost fully into Windows as a service later on (if they can)

I've been tinfoil-hattish in the past about software, believing that corporations are trying to dumb us down with big-button idiot software so they can make the most money off of us as sheep.

I've toned down on this belief, but I still think it's partially true. all I know is: there is absolutely nothing I can do to change this

So the next version of Windows is getting announced next Thursday. A lot of people seem to think it will be called Windows 11 (even though it was announced six years ago that the next version would just be called "Windows").

For my part, I think it will be called Windows365, but I hope it's called Windows 12.

I would be trying 11 and various customization/fun tools (OpenShell, deskn.cpl, WineVDM, old malware, etc...) inside a VM as well if I had a more powerful computer.

In other words, maybe next month/in the next few months.

And I used OTVDM in this case for CC. But yea, similar concept on both.



They announced 11, btw. Out this holiday. Plenty of systems reporting they can't update to it though. Because M$.

As far as I know, OTVDM is just the older name for WineVDM.

For the compatibility checker extravaganza, now you've just got to wait for the "Mandatory Update" for Windows 10/others coming with gw11.exe to suddenly report that the machine "can be upgraded" now. Of course, removing gw11 should be impossible/extremely unintuitive and horribly break the Windows install if you just go and delete it through a live CD.

Neither do I. I can only imagine how it was like to manually remove gwx on god-knows-how-many machines.

Also, I found out the hard way by breaking an install on my desktop PC running Windows 7. It would just boot to the recovery partition and consistently fail to repair anything, requiring me to use the restore CD.

(while the Windows 7 laptop I'm typing this on never got the "update" to begin with)


I didn't really care that much though, since I had HBCD so nothing was lost.
It wasn't a repeat of 2008, where there was a failed attempt at removing Norton Antivirus from a 2004 XP machine, and the restore CD by Packard Bell for some reason did *not* offer any way to preserve the contents of the C: drive, and so a bunch of data was lost.

Even the later restore CD from 2011 (the one used for Windows 7) did not offer any way to recover the C: drive either. Thanks there!

I'll probably end up being an early adopter of Win11. I was an early adopter of Win10 as well, and I've honestly never had any issues with it, and it's only gotten better as time has gone on (and not in the "it's finally functional after five years" sense; rather, after improvements to the general Microsoft software stack, Windows serves literally every purpose I need other than one). So long as Office, Vivaldi, wt, VSCode, Discord, f.lux, and a handful of video games run on it at launch (which I suspect they all will, except maybe Riot Vanguard might need an update), I'll have no real reason to not upgrade.

Honestly I like that Microsoft is continuing to chase the macOS design philosophy without ripping it off too obviously. Apple has historically been great at making user interfaces that non-technical users can just reason their way through without much trouble, and Microsoft has lacked in that department in at least a few aspects in the past. Most of Windows' more unusual UX choices in recent years make a lot more sense when you watch a bunch of sales people try to struggle through basic technical things like "open the sound control panel and check your microphone volume" and realize that those of us who are posting on web 1.0 forums in 2021 are an extreme exception to the rule of "the user is generally completely non-technical and will throw their hands up in frustration and complain that computers are too hard if they see too many scary computer words on the screen at once".

Windows does UX stuff that's weird to us technical types like upgrading the OS overnight because the average user will never update their ancient, Facebook-ad-sourced-malware-clogged horror show of a Walmart discount tier laptop, then when they get pwned by every worm and exploit out there shell out $200 a pop to Joey E. Silicon's Electronics Butchery to run Malwarebytes on the poor then and then hand it back to them so they can continue posting the 21st century equivalent of chain letters on Facebook. It's also the core reason that the Year of Linux on the Desktop is a thing that continues to be a current_year+1 concept but that's probably a ramble and a half about user experience for a different thread.
