What is your opinion on Windows 10 so far?
Exactly what it says. What is your opinion about Windows 10 so far? Do you have it installed? Would you recommend it? Do you think it is better or worse than older Windows versions?

So, Windows 10 was released a month or so ago along with a free upgrade for those who had Windows 7 or Windows 8. I've heard quite a bit of things about it on the internet, and since it's been a while and it seems like a lots of bugs have been fixed already, I would like to hear everyone's opinions about Windows 10. Did you install it? If you did, or even if you didn't, what is your opinion on it so far? Do you think it will be the next great Windows version like 7, or do you think Microsoft shot themselves in the foot again?

As for me, I think Windows 10 will probably be a very good operational system, it could be the next great OS from Microsoft. It certainly will replace Windows 8, but I think it'll be more difficult for Microsoft to attract people who use 7 to it. I'm preparing my computer for the upgrade to 10 as I still have to try it (which will be someday in the future, before the end of the year) but I really really like Windows 7 (I still prefer Aero over Metro UI). I might stick with 10 if I end up liking it, but chances are I'll revert back to 7 right afterwards.

Edit: Dangit, that Windows icon worked on the preview thing. Could somebody replace it with this one?

I probably will upgrade at some point, but right now it's out of the question. The privacy issues surrounding it are a bit annoying but it doesn't bother me too much. What bothers me is the forced updates. I really won't want to be forced to update my PC and then have it get bricked due to a faulty driver update or whatever. I need this laptop for work so I really shouldn't risk it.

I do remember reading the new DirectX updates are pretty amazing, so there's that for an incentive. Maybe I'll upgrade when it has stabilized - so after a year or so.

KLayout v3.1
I have tried it in a VM, so I don't have any way to know how it performs on real hardware, but I don't really care.

I don't need any of the features added in Windows 10. Privacy concerns aside (oh boy), it's the same thing that would do anything I'd need to.

Notable exception: it's said it takes one program not working to make the decision of not upgrading. The program in question is Virtual PC 2007, which doesn't run.

I'll stay with Windows 7 because it does what I need. I don't want to risk on the upgrade to get the "Same old thing"™. I also have a tendency of staying on whatever OS my computer has, so this will stay Windows 7 until the end of the ride.

EDIT: Oh yes, and the less customization available as-is is another of the bad things. Can't disable permanently Windows Defender (at least, I couldn't) and forced updates aren't something I really enjoy. I have a bunch of tools to make the experience better, but still you shouldn't have to use those.

I was debating whether or not to upgrade, but this settles it. I need that program to make KvSG!

I don't have much of an opinion on Windows 10 since I haven't installed it.

I guess I could really care less since I am perfectly content with Windows 8.1. I know how to use it, where stuff is and it runs fine for me.

As the saying goes, "if it isn't broken, don't try to fix it" and that is what I am sticking to.

Plus, I don't want to be a guinea pig for a new OS.

Windows 10's pretty alright--like what Cuber and Schezo said, 8.1 and 7 are still perfectly functional. There isn't anything notable--at least as far as for what my use calls for.

It isn't playing nice with my subwoofer, though... I'd switch back if it wasn't such a pain in the ass or if something completely stopping working (like VPC 2007, which I don't use)...

it's alright. the windows 95 startup-like sound scheme is ok

I remember there was a workaround to make it work on Windows 8/8.1, but this doesn't work anymore on Windows 10.

Or maybe I just got my facts wrong.

I remember those privacy problems, but from what I've saw most of those can simply be disabled and the ones that can't be disabled are probably an exaggeration from the community (not that I don't care about it, privacy should be a big concern). I still don't like that those options come enabled by default.

Oh, and I forgot that some programs might stop working. That will probably be an issue.

Windows 10 COULD be a great OS; at its core, it's faster and more stable than Windows 7 and 8 (as is the norm by now), and introduces some great new features. Unfortunately, it's bogged down by a ton of problems and pants-on-head stupid design decisions, including (but not limited to):

- Forced automatic updates. I don't care if you enable automatic updates by default and make them difficult for casual users to disable, but for the love of God, give power users a legitimate option to disable them. Bury it deep in an administrative control panel somewhere, flash warning lights and play a loud siren when you uncheck the option, I don't care, just let me choose!
- Safe mode can only be enabled after Windows boots. It should be immediately obvious why this is a problem (and if it's not, consider that I got stuck in a BSOD/reboot loop because Windows automatically installed a bad driver, and mashing F8 at boot did nothing).
- Zero privacy with a default installation. This has been covered many times already.
- Ridiculous lack of customizability. Colored title bars are coming soon, but that should have been a feature out of the box (and when it does arrive, it will still be extremely limited). Absolutely flat, black-on-white windows are not everyone's cup of tea. And why are you limited to such a small set of pastel colors? Why not let users choose exactly what colors they want, and where they want them?
- A schizophrenic UI, thanks in large part to the utter catastrophe that was Windows 8. Windows 10 happily bounces between Metro-ish and classic UIs, each with their own respective graphical style. There's no coherency.
- Ads everywhere. Advertising is now an integral part of Windows and its apps. It's disgusting.
- MIDI support has essentially vanished from the OS. Granted, they're kind of a relic of the past now that everyone has broadband and can download actual recorded albums in seconds, but some of us still have a use for them.

Overall, there is a distressing lack of choice in Windows 10. Freedom of choice is one of the biggest things that set Microsoft apart from Apple, and it's really sad that they seem to have forgotten this.

I haven't had a chance to form a real opinion about Windows 10 yet. I got a new laptop with Windows 8 and upgraded it to 10, but... annoying unsolvable wifi issues and Windows 8 together killed my motivation to do anything with it.

Is the privacy fuss about shit like "send usage statistics to Microsoft", or is it actually more severe?

As people say here, it'd be mostly the same thing as Windows 7, albeit with support for newer DirectX versions. Does it handle archive types like 7zip or tar.gz natively, or does it still limit itself to .zip? Does it handle APNG files? And you know, all those things.

Forced updates? God no. Do the morons at Microsoft never use their shit or what? Do they go out of their way to ignore feedback? I figured that by the time they'd have figured out how annoying Windows Update is. And they respond by... shoving it down your throat.

Well, I'm fine-ish with it if they got rid of the forced reboot. Who likes coming back to their computer to find out that it killed all your potentially unsaved work because some idiot thinks that their "Security update for Internet Explorer KB5456416321" is more important than everything else?

And installing updates when you shut down your computer, atleast let me choose whether I want to do that, god fucking damnit. It's a good idea for a desktop computer, but for a laptop, not so much. Have you ever been in that situation where you need to leave quickly to catch a bus/train/plane/whatever? You turn your laptop off, prepare to pack, and... oh wait I need to install 57 updates first, and if you forcefully turn me off, you will find your OS half-broken on the next boot. Too bad for you!

"A schizophrenic UI, thanks in large part to the utter catastrophe that was Windows 8. Windows 10 happily bounces between Metro-ish and classic UIs, each with their own respective graphical style. There's no coherency."

This. The result is even worse on that laptop I got. It has a high-density display, and Windows is set to scale things accordingly so it's not all tiny. Well... some of the windows, the ones with the modern style, scale up nicely, while others just get stretched and look all blurry and shitty.

I'd rather much have all the windows be shitty than have a UI mishmash like that. Atleast stay consistent, god fucking damnit.

(this occured on Windows 8, but Windows 10 didn't make it better)

"Ads everywhere. Advertising is now an integral part of Windows and its apps. It's disgusting."

Are you fucking serious??

Ads everywhere are already shitty enough on Android, and now that trend is making it to desktop computers too? Fuck no. If need be I'll stick to MS-DOS, but their ads aren't reaching my computer.

Who even thinks that's a good thing? It's like if you had giant ad panels installed in your house, with contents adjusted to your lifestyle. You like playing games? Buy the new Logitech S68746dfdf joystick! You like watching porn? Buy the new, stronger Lotus tissues!

Oh well. Someone will surely figure out a way to hack those out of Windows. Hopefully they don't get slapped with a C&D.

The ads alone would be THE reason to stick to Windows 7 for me.

I'll play a devil's advocate a little bit.

When Windows 8 was released it was certainly met with criticism:

-They flat out removed the start menu. A pretty stupid thing to do considering it had been there since Windows 95. It allows for easy access to recently used programs, files, and common directory locations. It would have been nice to at least have an option to re-enable the start menu.

-They added the start screen. This was Microsoft's replacement to the start menu. I can see the potential it has if you actually keep it organized. However, I will say it was a big turn off to actually use it. Half the screen is littered with programs you never actually put there. The other half seems to be a bunch of random programs/files you have/had been using with no rhyme or reason. I mean, right now I have a python command line, code blocks, cheat engine and virtual box all within the same group. All programs which I haven't used in ages might I add.

-The fucking charm bar and other edge swipe bullshit. Windows 8 (at least for laptops) added the ability to be able to get to a bunch of settings and options or open some app launched in Windows 8 mode by edge swiping the touch pad. The issue was that it was waaaaay to easy to active this shit. I can't tell you how many times I would accidentally activate the charm bar and then do something like launch the start screen from there. The worst part is that there was no way to disable these hand gestures at launch.

Like I see what they were trying to do with Windows 8. They were trying to create a unified OS across multiple platforms. Windows 8 on a tablet would be no different than a laptop and all the stuff I mentioned above does make at least some sense from that point of view. Like the start screen would make it easy to find an app on a tablet. The charm bar would be an easy way to pull up settings on a tablet. The big issue with all of this is that Microsoft didn't give you the option of how you wanted to have your OS set up. You were forced to do things pretty differently from Windows 7. However, given some time, fixes to get around these problems were made.

It's now easy to install a 3rd party start menu like Classic Shell. It's also possible to disable the stupid edge swipe stuff via the mouse in the control panel (I'm pretty sure you were stuck with it in 8 at launch).

This is where I want to make the link to Windows 10. Windows 8 did suck initially but, over time, tweaks did come out to help you customize how you wanted to control your OS. I imagine that, given time, some of this (although I'd be cynical to say all) will also happen to Windows 10. I know I might have used some dinky example here with Windows 8 but the emphasis is that some stuff did get better with time.

And I will also emphasis why I generally don't want to be a guinea pig for stuff like this. Let other people go through the headaches of trying to figure out how to fix and get the most out of the new OS. By the time I get around to it, there is an easy solution then it will take me little effort to dig it up.

Do you really think they will fix the forced update shit, though? Windows Update has been nothing but an annoyance for God knows how long, and during all that time the Windows Update team has gone out of their way to ignore user feedback about it. Why would it change all of a sudden?

That's something that they'll probably not change. The (rumored) reason that Microsoft is giving free updates to Windows 10 is to get everyone on the same platform. The next step would be making everyone use the same revision of Windows, which is where Windows Update kicks in. It sucks that it's like this, but maybe they'll fix it later. We all know that Microsoft doesn't generally fix things very quickly, but we can hope.

For right now, if I read correctly, you can defer updates for a little while (not permanently) and uninstall updates once they're installed (which still is problematic if the update glitches Windows too badly).

Can you find me a source on that? I can't find anything about it. Do you mean it can't play MIDI files without third party software? Or are you referring to something else?

Basically this. Had the tech preview on my laptop and loved it. As soon as it was released, installed it on my PC. Don't particularly give two shits about privacy, and even though I have the choice, I install updates anyway.

The UI IS a little irritating. I'd rather have a dark theme for everything, not this plain white. Also, kinda amused at the fact that I'm now using the Start Screen instead of the Start Menu.

The ONLY problem I've had so far is that my Xbox 360 controller doesn't seem to work.

So, I was going to install Windows 10 but, seems like the download file isn't just 2GB, it's closer to 20GB. I've wasted an entire day just trying to download the 2GB, I can only imagine how much time it would take to download ten times as many files.

I've thought a little bit more about it, and I decided I won't be updating to Windows 10, at least not for now. Maybe it's for the better. I'll just tinker with the Windows 7 settings to see if runs a little faster, I probably need to do some cleaning. Otherwise, that's it.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
