if we're talking about aesthetic/music/setting/the environmental overtones i actually think sunshine is great and i could understand how people love it, but yeah, i can't get past fludd. a lot of the issue with fludd is that they don't really do a good job of designing the game around it -- a lot of puzzles can be solved by just hovering up realllly slowly (or worse still that's the solution). when you sequence break something in mario 64 it feels good! it feels like you're doing something clever that takes skill and just feels fun to pull off. in sunshine it too often feels like you remembered you can press a button

also blue coins kinda suck frankly

(for all that stuff i just said i still really love sunshine)

a wild opinion: mario 64 is actually really good graphically. not that it looks good, but it's good at what it's trying to accomplish. like, it's overly simplistic and uses a lot of bright primary colors and a lot of gaussian shading, and it's better for that. a lot of problems with early 3D games is that everything just looks kind of muddy and foggy and kinda blends together, but by using techniques that make objects stand out more, not using too many complex textures, and not having to obscure far-distanced objects with fog, the game ends up being a lot more playable today than a lot of its contemporaries. the fact that mario uses very bright shades of red and blue for his outfit was also a good choice, as it makes him stand out more, and keeping track of where mario is is important

another wild opinion i have is that the N64 zelda games' soundtracks are good because of the atmospheric music

like, fricken, forest/water/spirit temples are my fav songs in OoT

Hottest Take MKII: I never really liked Secret of Mana
Seiken 1 and 3 are p nice, Legend of Mana is GOAT

----

Also, Sonic Adventure 1 aged extremely badly but it's not completely unplayable outside of maybe Amy (Big is just a matter of knowing how to angle, press down and pull back gently). Adventure 2 has far worse issues in the gameplay department and it's the more stable one of the two which says something.

chao are good tho i need to start raising some again

----

Also this is gonna make a lot of people upset with me but Majora is just as overrated as Ocarina
I came in hyped for all the sidequests and world-building but all the waiting and obsession with dumb minigames and sidequests that require you to clear a dungeon in the 3 day cycle before being able to do it and aaaaaaaaaaaa

I didn't 100% it, just went for all masks
It's a great world but it's not that special a game lol

LttP was p overrated in my eyes too, Awakening did it better (need to replay the Oracles and Minish but I remember them being outstanding too)

----

Also this is technically an unpopular opinion due to how big the meme got lol

KH's plotline isn't as convoluted if you play the games in release order (KH-CoM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-DDD-0.2-χ Back Cover-KH3)

It just suffers from the Star Wars issue of "the writers made shit up as they went along"

Fuck playing χ tho why would you play a mobage for the story

sequence breaking in sunshine can be fun, but there aren’t many opportunities for it. the best one is getting into Pinata Village really early. i guess that’s cool.

honestly, the worst parts are the “secret” stages—like the Mario places where there’s an a capella version of the Mario theme playing. those expose all the problems of the physics of the game. it’s bad enough w/ F.L.U.D.D.; it’s even worse w/o.

wish you could fill F.L.U.D.D. up w/ other things, like acid.

I can understand not being into MM more, actually, and I wouldn't call it a very unpopular opinion, the game is a rather divisive title. People like me who like it seem to like it a lot, but there are plenty who don't like it, especially in comparison to OoT.

Anyway, you never really need to complete a dungeon in the 3-Day cycle before getting accesses to a side quest. Technically that is something you have to do, but once you have cleared a dungeon once then the dungeon activates a warp from the first room directly to the boss if you should have to come back to it and deal with it again. I can sort of see this being annoying, but the boss fights are generally not the large time constraint when it comes to dungeons.

Also, fun fact, you can actually beat the game without all the masks! Maybe you know this, I didn't myself as a kid. The final boss is more interesting without the Fierce Deity mask if you ask me!

The the Digimon World DS titles are great. Well, the first one was so/so, but Dawn/Dusk is great. I was tracking the Lost Evolution translation project but I kinda gave up on it I guess. I waited many years for it but it kinda seemed to slow down more and more.

My favorite is Zelda 2, and the best overhead view one is Minish Cap. And no, it's not because you can turn into a fairy / very tiny.

It'd also be better having him not interrupt you in mid-battle or mid-dungeon with some of the most obvious things.

I always viewed Ezlo's obnoxious interruptions as a sort of proto-Fi.

Nintendo is very good at coming up with a terrible gimmick and then sticking with it for a decade even though no one wants it.

Anyway, does anyone feel like Sunshine could've been a lot better if the controls in the 3D platform segments were more responsive and precise?

I know some people said that Mario 64's controls were bad, whereas the DS remake has it more prevalent and evident because of it infrequently not responding to controls.

The DS remake also has a much more limited set of controls (UDLR) than analog input. Unless you used that wacky, awkward, useless... touchscreen... thing. Blech.

Apparently the intended use for that uh, "control scheme" was with the thumb stylus that shipped with the original DS, and even weirder it supposedly worked pretty well?

I don't think that was the original thumb stylus; the original one was part of a lanyard, iirc, with basically just a rounded, flattened nub at the end. I don't recall it working well, but I also have big hands and effectively having to use the center of the device to control things sucked.

here's an apparently unpopular opinion:

The Squenix Steam ports for FFs III-VI and CT are good, actually, and often the best version.

Can you go into some details on why?

They are pretty lazy conversions of their mobile ports which often had their fair share of issues. So I'm legitimately curious why anyone would opt for these over, say, the DS port of CT or the GBA port of FF V, etc.

i never said my DSi take in here?

imo the best way to experience DS games is through the DSi. the GBA port is unnecessary and adds clutter. i like my older consoles to play one type of game well rather than play one well and one sorta awkwardly w/ weird matting and jutting out of the console. the menus are all around better in the DSi, too. at the time of its release it was a bad investment, but now it’s as cheap as the DS Lite so i think it’s a better experience.

similarly, Game Boy Micro for GBA games (unless you get a modded GBA with a glass screen). i never liked the feel of the GBA SP.

and i’m split between Game Boy Light and Game Boy Pocket for GB.

GBC games only has the GBC to work with, of course, but again if they’re backwards compatible i prefer playing it in GBP 90% of the time.
