this sums up so well exactly why i cant get enjoyment out of those types of games, i mean all the prominent elitism aside, its not even fun to me on principle! i dont mind some friendly competition and i enjoy a good challenge, i play games to win sometimes with my siblings and friends from time to time- but usually we talk ahead of time about all kinds of ideas we want to play around with when we do that. that way it doesnt fall back into the habit of just relying on your strategically 'best' options, you have more room for experimenting with fresh combinations and choices, and to get to see how your flaws will stack up as well. losses are fun, its really funny to see something go tragically wrong even when you were hoping for the best. xD

high five me too!

I'm too bad at competitive games to enjoy them, and I don't have the time to get better, so...
Plus I'll take five 12 hour single player games over pushing through 60 hours of multiplayer.

hmm yeah i guess i like mario party

everyone i know plays fpses though and i fell into the peer pressure of wasting money on them (csgo and overwatch) and had an absolutely abysmal time with them so i guess it's mostly fpses that i hate

windjammers is an ok competitive game too unless i play with someone too much better than me to the point that i absolutely can't win then it's just frustrating

I loved Mario Party when it came out, and the minigames are fun, but nowadays, I love the board game part of it the same. But it's hard getting friends to play it.

At least my friends aren't that into FPSes and play some games I like.

Funny you mention Windjammers. That was the game that got me to buy a Neo Geo cabinet (still cheaper than an AES with original cart), and it's the cartridge thats almost permanently installed in it. It is soo much fun.

If you have the chance though, try the Neo Geo CD version, it is excactly the same game, except the time limit is 90s and the winning score at 25. Makes for some intense matches.

Back on topic though: I don't know what peoples fascination is with any Zelda. I played trough Link's Awakening, but the rest, I just can't warm up to them.

I just had to check. You're parcial right. The timer can be set to anything up to 99. But the maximum score for a win is still set to 12, not 25.

EDIT / REPOST: Need to quote the correct post, silly me.

hm, could've sworn you could change the winning score. ah well, my matches with my friend would always end due to time limit anyway so they're long enough (we both suck) that changing the winning score isn't really necessary, just time limit.

Finally uploaded the image for proof:

I still think it's weird that Windjammers is one of the only Neo Geo games that was since it's initial release has only now been rereleased, and then only on PS4. Would be nice to have had on Wii Virtual Console or now on Switch.

But at least now a new generation of players can finaly bask in the glory of "Flying Power Disc".

And again about Zelda: Am I the only one not liking the N64 games music? Incl. Starfox 64?

I think so, because a lot of people like the N64 soundtrack, particularly Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask and Star Fox 64.

Am I the only one who thinks FF3 was better handled gameplay wise on the FC compared to the 3D remakes?

I don't really like the N64 Zelda games' music, other than a handful of tracks. And even then, mostly just the atmospheric ones.

No I agree with this. All of the encounter designs in the 3D remake is kind of bad, they had to rebalance all encounters for less enemies so they kinda just mashed the stats together it felt like. The random encounters are just really, really, bad.

Here's another one: Super Mario 64 is a pretty meh game in the mario series. I still like it, but I really don't see what all the praise it gets is about. I really like the level structure of letting you do objectives in mostly any order as long as you know about them, certainly one of the games best features. But what you're actually tasked with doing? Kinda meh. I have some nostalgia for the game, but it's telling that I have no interest to go back and play it again.

i feel like it’s pretty typical to hate on Mario 64 at this point, so i’d like to say the opposite and say my unpopular opinion is it’s a great game. there isn’t rly another game where it’s as fun to control Mario.

Sunshine is a good risky game, one with environmental overtones that tie Mario into something concrete in our world; for that i rly respect it. but i don’t think it’s the most fun physics-wise. i just am not rly happy w/ F.L.U.D.D. tbqf.

I like a lot about sunshine, but they kinda had to thrown a lot of the actual platforming out the window when dealing with fludd. Like, platforming in the actual stages is on such a large scale because you can hoover and fly everywhere. It's probably why so many of the platforming challenges are in those side rooms instead where you don't have it.

I kinda group my interest for sunshine around the same as for SM64, even if what I like and dislike about them differ.

if we're talking about aesthetic/music/setting/the environmental overtones i actually think sunshine is great and i could understand how people love it, but yeah, i can't get past fludd. a lot of the issue with fludd is that they don't really do a good job of designing the game around it -- a lot of puzzles can be solved by just hovering up realllly slowly (or worse still that's the solution). when you sequence break something in mario 64 it feels good! it feels like you're doing something clever that takes skill and just feels fun to pull off. in sunshine it too often feels like you remembered you can press a button

also blue coins kinda suck frankly

(for all that stuff i just said i still really love sunshine)

a wild opinion: mario 64 is actually really good graphically. not that it looks good, but it's good at what it's trying to accomplish. like, it's overly simplistic and uses a lot of bright primary colors and a lot of gaussian shading, and it's better for that. a lot of problems with early 3D games is that everything just looks kind of muddy and foggy and kinda blends together, but by using techniques that make objects stand out more, not using too many complex textures, and not having to obscure far-distanced objects with fog, the game ends up being a lot more playable today than a lot of its contemporaries. the fact that mario uses very bright shades of red and blue for his outfit was also a good choice, as it makes him stand out more, and keeping track of where mario is is important

another wild opinion i have is that the N64 zelda games' soundtracks are good because of the atmospheric music

like, fricken, forest/water/spirit temples are my fav songs in OoT

Hottest Take MKII: I never really liked Secret of Mana
Seiken 1 and 3 are p nice, Legend of Mana is GOAT

----

Also, Sonic Adventure 1 aged extremely badly but it's not completely unplayable outside of maybe Amy (Big is just a matter of knowing how to angle, press down and pull back gently). Adventure 2 has far worse issues in the gameplay department and it's the more stable one of the two which says something.

chao are good tho i need to start raising some again

----

Also this is gonna make a lot of people upset with me but Majora is just as overrated as Ocarina
I came in hyped for all the sidequests and world-building but all the waiting and obsession with dumb minigames and sidequests that require you to clear a dungeon in the 3 day cycle before being able to do it and aaaaaaaaaaaa

I didn't 100% it, just went for all masks
It's a great world but it's not that special a game lol

LttP was p overrated in my eyes too, Awakening did it better (need to replay the Oracles and Minish but I remember them being outstanding too)

----

Also this is technically an unpopular opinion due to how big the meme got lol

KH's plotline isn't as convoluted if you play the games in release order (KH-CoM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-DDD-0.2-χ Back Cover-KH3)

It just suffers from the Star Wars issue of "the writers made shit up as they went along"

Fuck playing χ tho why would you play a mobage for the story
