It's a real shame, because imageshack was the shit back in 2004 or so

I actually had to delete someone's userpic last night because it was one of those shitty ads. 670x120. why

I rely on a lot of instructional threads and tutorials for DIY projects (mostly electronic stuff), and I swear Imageshack has rendered 90% of them useless by deleting their images:

Step 1: Locate the component circled in the photo.

Step 2: Locate the two traces below this component and cut the one marked in blue. DO NOT CUT THE RED ONE OR YOU WILL RENDER THE DEVICE INOPERABLE!

[Click to make babies cry.]

Go to hell, Imageshack. You go to hell and you die.

Not to mention how clever it is. "Click to discover Imageshack". They somehow thought all their images would be embedded as clickable miniatures.

Because otherwise... I don't know how they expect clicking a plain image to have any effect whatsoever.

I made my board filter Imageshack links. Along with 4shared (some crappy file sharing site that requires registration to download files oh I already said that).

The shitty 404 thing also reminds me of typical free webhosts. Not only do their enforce their own 404 page, but generally it's just terrible, most times it's some dumb ad and maybe a tiny '404 not found' mention.

One of the hosts I went through had a 404 page that was mostly a lenghty explanation of what a 404 error is.

I'd love it if someone made a browser extension that recognized this image and blocked it. In the meantime, I just adblock them as I meet them.

I've actually been saving some old pages I like just because Imageshack has been doing this. Even then, some (but fortunately not all, and some more can be rescued through the Wayback Machine through some trickery) are lost.

This was bad especially if the image is used as a custom title in a thread and it breaks the layout in a horrible way.

So ImageShack has been down since last night. Apparently, it will take possibly 24-72 hours to restore everything. Cool.

Honestly, I was going to suggest blocking images from ImageShack in here, and I discovered I'm not the only one:

Can't we replace all images from ImageShack with this or something of the sort?

Honestly, the ideal long-term solution would be to have the forum grab all posted images and rehost them immediately.

Kind of tricky to implement considering we allow HTML, though.

Considering I've used Imageshack for most everything all of the years I've been here, I'm not too fond of that idea.

Imageshack is garbage and I strongly recommend relocating to some other service, even if it's your own hosted website on shared hosting or even a little VPS (it's like $5 for a cheap one at DigitalOcean, lemme know if you want a referral) or something

Imageshack gets in the way of image hosting, retrieving and viewing images, and is generally an utter nightmare, right up there with Tinypic, infamous for reusing URLs and showing people porn

I understand where you're coming from.

But this is not something that is really possible for a lot of reasons, especially on a board full of programmers. What if you create a dynamic signature, avatar, layout etc.? Suddenly it isn't any more.

There are still solutions to that, but they're not as trivial. You could allow some kind of override for power users. You could also just grab one snapshot of the image, and only start showing it if the existing one goes down.

Definitely not fun very to code.

EDIT: Keep in mind the majority of images will be static pictures in posts, though, and those need preserving the most anyway.

Probably more trouble than it's worth, and could cause the server to fill up with crap pretty quickly.

What should happen if, for example, a lamer comes by and posts a ton of porn images? You don't really want them to end up on your server.

Not that it matters any more, but if someone had a dynamic image for, say, their post count, suddenly you are storing a growing number of images that you have to start checking regularly (how regularly?). Even if you somehow disregard this, any one person's post or layout might contain many images, and especially when you start taking into account things like CSS, external CSS, etc. it very, very quickly becomes an absolute logistics nightmare.

A future block of Imageshack/Tinypic would probably be a more sensible idea, to be honest. So, the old stuff that's still up will still work until the inevitable shart from them, but future images won't be a problem.

Why not just grab all the images from image hosts sites on a blacklist you create, and rehost those? Not saying that would be very fun to code either, but I see it as more feasible.

You would still have to parse layouts and posts, then remote files (CSS), save it to a local location, save the replacements, dynamically replace them in each post (or save the altered post period). You would also have to account for things.

If a person posts a URL to a .php script, how can you be sure it is an image and not another page? What about a URL that has no extension?

Again, as I said, still very difficult. Particularly because of remote CSS files. But:

Because the blacklist specifically checks only for links to imageshack/tinypic/whathaveyou that will all have proper URLs and static images only.

Wait, people still use ImageShack? I thought everyone in here left it a while ago, which is why I thought it would be a good idea to just replace the old images with something else. Since they're already in a 404 state it wouldn't make a difference, it would just remove those annoying ImageShack ads.

...why are people still using ImageShack again? If you want to use a better image service, I recommend Imgur. It might be a little weird to get used to, but once you do it works wonderfully.

For some of the Imageshack images, sometimes you're lucky and the Wayback machine saved them. That would be a good starting point in an attempt to recover deleted images, but the problem is that it would basically require manually checking everything.

Anyway, I approve of the idea to block future ImageShack images, even if the blocklist is only partial and doesn't count .php image cyclers.
