So what started as an "I want to see this translated sometime" has turned into "I'm going to study both the Japanese language and learn how to frig around with ROMs"! My first translation undertaking is probably going to end up being one of the most confusing things known to man, because that's my luck.

The first part I'm doing is translating the script. As I haven't managed to be able to figure out how to go doing a text dump yet, I'm basically doing things the utterly hard way and taking a bunch of screenshots, translating them to romaji, and trying to translate things from there. Hard way? Yes, but as someone who's new to this, it's at least keeping me doing something and being interested in the subject.

Currently I'm only fooling around with the dialogue screens. Here's some various notes I have for the first and second stages written down. Some of the translations may be accurate, others may so totally be off the mark it's ridiculous. I've been using jisho.org to help garner ideas and maybe get a gist to see if I can figure out an accurate translation for myself. Some of these I've gone through fully, others are partials.

I don't expect full-on translations from you guys, but if you could point out say, common words or sentence structure things that would help me get it, that would be awesome of you guys.

Note: A | indicates where the line break is in the game.

Using the translator would be the best tool to turn Japanese language to English without having to know what the english ones are. I think google translator would get them to translate.

Just using Google Translate is a horrible idea. It's a gisted translation, not what they're saying in the exact context and in the correct tone of politeness, not taking things into account, and words that have multiple different meanings.

A more thorough translation is needed for this game, otherwise it's going to sound totally ridiculous.

It's a lot more manageable when you separate individual words (and particles) instead of leaving everything smooshed together.

How can you tell where the words are? I have a hard time telling where the particles even are sometimes or what they are. I'm learning, I hope!

Thanks for the first one!

Maybe we can discuss this a bit further sometime too, outside of here? It'd be nice to have a consultant of sorts. :O

I'll send you a PM.

Definitely practice, but also if the text uses any Kanji it makes it markedly easier to separate the hiragana (which are usually the verb conjugations and particles) from the rest of the text. γ―γ€γ¨γ€γŒγ€γΈγ€γ« are probably the most common ones you'll see. If you recognise whole words, the kana outside of it are often particles, too.

Aye yes, I do recognize some words here and there, so it's just trying to figure out what the particles are and what they mean for some parts. Theeeeeeen it's about reconstructing everything else.

So I was gone for a few days too and I tried to translate some of the text using FCEUX and a hex editor. I found the address where the dialogue was stored, but when I tried to change a character the game threw up. It seems that each dialogue is only loaded up in the level it needs to be in, so it looks like changing the dialogue is going to be more of a hassle than it originally appeared to be.

In good news though, I did find a full English alphabet inside the ROM itself that doesn't really appear to be used, so I can swap out a lot of things with that and not have to make my own graphics. In fact, one of the few things it appears I need to create is an apostrophe.

Thanks as well, Joe, for continuing to help translate!

Still going at it! Albeit slowly.

I had a friend try to space out some of the romaji up to Level 3, so I'll probably post something involving that soon.

Still no idea how to alter text without the game freaking out and crashing hardcore on me, though this may be because I'm trying to use the hex editor in FCEUX? I noticed the text only seems to load when I enter a level. Is there something I need to do to dig further into the ROM and find the text? I'm kinda stumped as to how I should go about this because haha n00b.

There are three address spaces the FCEUX hex editor (in the View menu), and I'd bet you're editing the CPU address space instead of the ROM address space. I'm not 100% certain how the hex editor hooks into the CPU address space, but I can think of at least two reasons why trying to edit that would crash the game.

If you edit the ROM address space instead, it shouldn't crash (as long as you're doing things right). Of course, I haven't actually tried this yet...

Oh my, what have I done here? :3

With that part down, the next and far more difficult issue is how I'm supposed to make extra space in the ROM for the expanded dialogue.

Things have been tight because work has made me its whipping bitch, but I'm slowly trying to piece it together. Though I have mentioned a common thread of "sugiyama kachou" (Chief Sugiyama) commonly among the bosses. The final boss is supposed to be some businessman guy, so I'm thinking that it's him.

Here's a few of my notes from the initial shopkeeper, and from Level 3 entirely.

I don't know who the bug character is yet (from Level 2), and looking up some videos hasn't produced anything, so if you guys got a name, lemme know, please! :3

There hasn't been a lot of time for me to poke at this, mostly because work has been sucking the life out of me. In any case, have at the very short entry for Level 4's dialogue boxes:

kawausokun. kimi ni ha nannouramimonaiga|kokode nemuttemoraimasu yo.
Kawauso-Kun. You {familiar} is what kind {bitterness/resentment/grudge} ?? ??? {to sleep/to die}

deyuwacchi!
??? I/myself {used by working men}
Note: I think this is more of a Superman-type "AWAY!" kind of saying, but I can't figure out for the life of me just -what- it means. My only guess is it's similar to what Dan Hibiki says in the Street Fighter Alpha 2 & 3 games in some of his win poses, but even then I got nothing to go on.

umumu...maketeshimattehashikataganai. kyo|unotokorohahikiapada. dehakoureinoHISO|TOdesu.
???...{to be defeated} {to put an end to} is {inevitable/can't be helped}. Today of ??? is
My defeat was inevitable.

sugiyama kachou ga, yuubeakachouchinda|naiteita.
Chief Sugiyama, {last night/evening}

deha sarabada deyuwacchi!
Well then {so}, farewell! DEYUWACCHI!

I think I figured it out randomly, finally!

I'd downloaded the Japanese arcade version of Ultraman and when you insert a coin a voice clip says "Dyuwacchi!". My guess is that it's some kind of weird-ass parody Superman stealing what's possibly Ultraman's catch phrase?

At least it's something to go on!

More work on this will come. Just gotta get back into the swing of things again.
