Okay, so not all his Gear was three-star. Still, it was super-annoying yesterday when all these players had two- and three-star Gear and I was stuck here with my one-star crap.

But on the bright side...

Hooray! Three-star Gear! And holy crap that stuff adds up fast. I got level 17 before work, and still didn't have enough cash to buy up all of the day's Gear, let alone the weapons I unlocked. Guess it's... more playing tonight. Woe is me.

This is true, but my experiences with it show it to be rather limited in its scope, particularly compared with the Splattershot Jr. which, as I mentioned, covers up enemy Roller tracks as fast as they can put them down. And with shots to spare. If it's so trivial to undo the work of a Roller, I have to question just how great it is.

I will admit that it's fun to distract the enemy and have one of my own teammates Roller 'em up straight out of squid form. I've seen many three- and four-splat combos that way.

I was thinking about this one after I posted it yesterday. I think I've just been comparing everything to the Splattershot Jr., which is a very efficient Turf-inking weapon, and that I perceived anything less efficient as "too slow". Compared to yet other weapons like the Chargers or the Splatterscope, the Rollers are very efficient at inking, so I should cut it some slack.

I see what you did there. I was going more for the "pompous dweeb" approach, since there's not really an elegant way to say "I'm so great".

I didn't realize the game was out until my friend told me he was playing it!

I want to get the game, but I don't know if I'd be able to spend as much time with it as I'd want to.

Don't know if it's a regional thing, but online play is shot for me tonight. Nothing but disconnects for all players. Sometimes I'm not the first to go, and I see the other players vanish in a literal puff of smoke before it gives me the ol' 118-0006 error. There's simply no way everyone has networking problems, so it's obviously an issue on Nintendo's side.

Maybe "issue" isn't a big enough word. Well, I've got plenty of time to come up with a more eloquent, more elaborate way of describing just how "not" the game is working right now, since I can't play it.

So I'd like to talk about my first post in this thread a bit because now having played the game...

...it definitely feels like an early access game.

Don't get me wrong: this game is amazing good fun, and it is so refreshing to see a game with this style while also still being fun to play, and I have a blast just chilling in the hub and seeing what people are drawing/saying. It's a feeling I haven't had in a long time. In fact, I don't remember the last time I sat down to play a console game this much at launch.

BUT HOLY CRAP it doesn't have a lot of content. Five maps, only 2 of which everyone around the world is allowed to play in 4 hour bursts. No way to join friends except when they are in a random game -- and if whom they are playing with stays, you are stuck at the waiting screen another 4 minutes until a spot opens. No modes besides Turf Wars, and while Ranked is close to being released, it adds one mode.

Sure, single player is complete and the game functions fully, but the multiplayer is severely lacking in content. While there is promise of more content coming, that wasn't something that goes well for many games that release as full (see: Titanfall).

I still love the game, but damn if this is all the game was I'd be severely disappointed.

Hey, TF2 only had 6 maps at release. Not like the community plays more than six maps overall anyway.

Doesn't seem to have hurt it in the long run.

The lobby thing is a bit of a drag, though.

Yeah I'm starting to really notice the lack of content on Multiplayer, but the game just keeps pulling me back in anyways~

Speaking of new content, today Nintendo had a micro-direct stating that Ranked battles, a new map, and a new weapon based on the NES Zapper are coming... today!

And I still don't have the game yet.

After experiencing some more networking problems, my Wii U was having genuine difficulty connecting to my WiFi, which is about 2 feet away from the unit. I even backed out to the system settings to test the connection and it was having issues, so maybe everyone's connectivity errors are from packets getting scrambled in the airwaves on the user end.

So I installed a dandy third-party LAN adapter that supports Wii U and... haven't seen a single problem since. Of course, that's just confirmation bias--all it takes is one good network screw-up and I'm back where I started. But I have a feeling it won't be happening, because now, I'm seeing an occasional player vaporize and the rest of the game goes on.

Maybe it's not the game's fault after all. Maybe Wi-fi is the culprit for the infamous network problems.

Video yonder

When I saw the footage of Port Mackerel, I though "Man, where have I seen that before?" Turns out they left a shot of it in the release build on the screens outside the lobby:

In other news, yay level 20!

And what do I have to show for it? More outlandishly expensive weaponry.

I'm torn between spending all 25,000 of my lilangeni on that one weapon, or saving them for tomorrow so I can buy some of the fancy three-star Gear it's gonna drop on me. Buuuuuut, let's go for the weapon. Get it out of the way, methinks.
__________

EDIT:
Heh, spoke too soon. A couple battles later and everyone exploded mid-match. Still, it's only happened once, but other matches it was able to gracefully recover. Wired network for the win.

The sudden drop-off of most players level 10 or higher as soon as Ranked Battles went live was hilarious. The ensuing battles against lowbies wielding their NZ-89s was a slaughterfest. (-:<

Also, yay new game modes! It's about freaking time.

I got the game!

The School Uniform (from the Inkling Girl amiibo) looks amazing, by the way. Sorely tempted to actually use it in end-game gear set-ups simply because of how it looks, hahaha. Just need a non-intrusive hat and some decent plain shoes...

Completed the offline story mode but I'm still having a bit of trouble aiming. No experience with dual-stick shooters made me stay with Gyro controls instead but I tend to be a bit shaky when I'm in a shoot-out and usually end up dying... even when I ambush them from behind, gah.

Anyways, I'll see if I can reach level 20 by the end of the week alongside some decent 3-star gear.

Maybe give the dual-stick setup another try. The gyro controls split the camera control into two separate functions: Left/Right and Up/Down. It's too much of a disconnect, and feels quite distracting. The movement with gyro also feels somewhat limited in comparison, and I'd rather not have to keep resetting the camera with the Y button just to maintain functionality. </rant>

Finished single player.

Final boss wasn't too hard but damn it felt fun to play. Hadn't felt that good to play a boss in a Nintendo game since Windwaker.

Some of the maps used in single player are multiplayer maps... including some you can't play on yet.

Oh, thank goodness. There's only seven new Gear items today, instead of 18. I should be able to have everything purchased before nightfall this time.

Not a fan of Port Mackerel. It's just one corridor after another, and the ledges on the sides are totally inaccessible from the middle. I think maybe you can climb up on top of the moving forklift and hop your way off to the sides, but it feels like a three-lane bout of nonsense with a bunch of obstacles in the way. At least the Roller can fill up the entire width of the paths.

I vastly prefer the motion controls, to be honest. You can still aim left and right by moving the game pad, but I can't figure out why they disable the Y-axis on the right stick when motion is enabled... Oh well.

Naw, the motion controls give me greater precision and, in combination with the right analog stick, faster turns. You couldn't get me to turn off motion controls with a $50 bill.

Yup, I just double-checked the stages and found two maps that are obviously multiplayer maps that haven't been unlocked yet: Kelp Dome and Bluefin Depot. There are actually battles with NPC-controlled characters on both of them, so you can get a sneak preview of how they play. I actually really like the layout of both of them, and can't wait for them to be available in online mode.

I got really annoyed with people wanting voice chat or saying "team-based shooter doesn't have voice chat", so I wrote something pretty quick:

My arguments aren't perfect, but I consider they're strong enough.

The server is undergoing maintenance. I guess it's bed time.

Also, I'm super-stoked that Spyke can change the Abilities on your Gear. I was under the impression that they were permanent for any given item and that you'd wind up with, like, multiple copies of everything. But Spyke can re-roll a fully unlocked Gear item's abilities, as well as add additional Abilities to Gear that already have less than 4. This is gonna be fun once I get everything unlocked.

Saw a guy whose message was "Yeah this message if you think Splatoon needs voice chat NOW." I wished I could "Nah" it instead. Two fins down.

No form of communication besides random Miiverse postings not everyone is going to see is probably the saving grace to this game. It removes any frustration from the game when you can't communicate to your teammates to blame them or flame the enemy for using "cheap" tricks.
