Yeah, I did get in. But my hype was so strong I refused to leave until I knew if they were extending or not.

I got a good number of rounds in. Oh man, it was so much fun that I'm now on permanent hype mode for it.

When I eventually bend and get a Wii U, Splatoon is one of those games I'll be looking out. The promise of unique FPS and free netplay sounds good. Has Wii U online been much better than Wii had in the past?

absolutely. Smash is a vast improvement over Brawl (in most cases, since it can still tank real badly)

Mario Kart runs pretty nicely on good days; other times, if there's lag, projectiles like red shells will act funny and the RANDOM ITEM SCROLL WOO can't be stopped for some time--usually 5-10 seconds, which is frustrating as hell (or being in 5th when you hit the finish line, only for your final standing to be 7th because server side dohoho)

I've only heard good things about Splatoon's connectivity though--aside from the server crashing hard yesterday.

I didn't really have any connection issues at all, nor did I know it was being extended. I just stopped playing and assumed it was done after they booted me off when the hour was done.

The demo really changed my opinion of the game. I've seen it covered to death in a lot of different publications. Nintendo's really pushing this game with a bunch of different media events since it was introduced at E3 last year. I'm probably going to get it on Friday.

What do you expect, considering that Iwata said in his interview that this is EAD's first new IP since Pikmin

And honestly, I'm fine with all the publicity they're giving it

Integrating Miiverse images into games has had a sort of sour past, where it always feels shoehorned and shoved in your face. But Splatoon uses the images as graffiti on the walls, and I find that particularly clever.

Click for the big version. The one on the left says "Inkvade The Smash 4 Ballot!"

I'm also noticing that the male Inkling model must have been added as an afterthought. All of the concept and "sunken scrolls" artwork they're presenting showcase only the female design, and the Octolings are also exclusively female.

Unsurprisingly, the teams you get matched with are hit-and-miss, and that's not just a shooting joke. I've had times where my team wiped the floor, and others where the floor got wiped. On the bright side, I'm winning and losing about 50% of the time, which is what should happen under hypothetically ideal circumstances.

There are two reasons I've seen on both teams that tend to lead to a loss: 1) someone goes after the other players, which isn't the objective, and 2) someone spends all their time covering the walls, which don't count as Turf. Having said that, I've played with some very bright people, and taking out enemies with them is a blast. I like to follow a guy with a Roller while hiding in Squid form in the ink trail he's leaving, using Ninja Squid so the enemy has no idea I'm there.

Speaking of Gear, I like the way they have that set up. Part of it is cosmetic, but there appears to be a randomly-assigned Ability attached to every piece (shoes, shirts, headgear) that boosts a stat in online mode. As you play while wearing a particular item, you can unlock one to three additional Abilities at a lesser strength, depending on the rarity of the item in question. I bought up everything the stores had, and I keep switching them out for other clothes as soon as they reach their maximum upgrades.

Fortunately, level doesn't mean much, other than an indicator of experience playing the game. That is to say, a higher-level player is less likely to run up to a Kraken in order to get a closer look at the model.

While you do unlock additional weapons as far up as level 20, they're not stronger weapons, so higher-level players aren't necessarily more likely to win. In fact, after level 10 or so they're not even new weapons. As it turns out, your gun, bombs and special weapon are all packed together in a set--you can't mix and match them. So the weapons available for sale are actually packs of 3, with some combinations being better for individual playstyles than others. I find myself sticking with the default Splattergun Jr./Splat Bomb/Bubbler combo because... well, Bubbler. That's my trump card.

Progress doesn't depend on whether you win or lose. In fact, the only thing that depends on whether you win or lose is the amount of coins Judd gives you at the end of the day (he's the cat in front of the Lobby). Your progress is directly linked to the amount of Turf you ink in online play: the number of units directly becomes XP-style progress (for both character and Gear) and the number of coins you get at the end of the battle. And a good player will get a solid 800 units per battle, plus 300 more if their team wins the match.

Well, that's level 16, but I gotta go back to work tomorrow. Life is cruel. The shopkeeps are indicating that I'm now at maximum freshness, so maybe tomorrow they'll give me some gear that has more than just the one star.

For the life of me, I can't fathom exactly why the Rollers are so popular. Sure, they can flatten a foe in one hit, but beyond that, they're slow, can't charge Special worth a darn, and are hiddeously short-range. Whenever I see like three of them on the opposing team, I think "Yayer!" because once you see one coming after you, you just... run backwards a bit. One of my favorite pastimes is following an opposing Roller user and just covering up the path he makes.

I wound up getting placed in a game with lower-level and/or inexperienced players tonight. We're talking levels 1 through 6. Yes, it was lopsided. Yes, I stayed in that game as long as I could because I'm ornery.

Eventually, a level 20 guy got lumped in too (which I think is the maximum, since I've never seen anyone above that), and I was happy to see that the system consistently put us on opposite teams. Not that I necessarily wanted to play against him, mind you: he earned that level. He was a clever tactician with his choice of strongholds and use of Squid Beacon to cordon off valuable Turf real estate, and all his Gear was three-star (4 Abilities each). He reserved his Kraken for the same situations I use my Bubbler for, and we gloriously stalemated when we engaged each other. Plus, he had Ninja Squid just like I did, so we weren't able to keep track of one another.

Uh... My Nintendo Network ID is GuyPerfect. Won't someone be my friend?

the object of splatoon is to paint turf

the roller is effective at covering turf with little effort

I imagine people who are more focused on the objective than trying to take down other players will find the roller attractive

I was really hesitant at first (especially because of the price here), but I decided to pick up Splatoon. I've been watching this thread and talking to a few people about some of the things that concerned me. I do have a few gripes about the game here and there (like forced motion controls for the tutorial), but all in all I'm having fun and I'm excited to see how far Nintendo takes Splatoon.

I find the roller is good at zone control and holding enemy teams back too I like sitting in really awkward spaces waiting for them to try to get me, then splashing them just as they try to reach the point.

It's also good for pushing and getting your own team to move forward. Otherwise they also move slow, get caught in enemy ink, or have to recharge constantly.

I also haven't had issues with "slow special charge".

I just remembered that the router here is two floors above the WiiU so I probably wouldn't be able to play online without lag. I probably won't be getting the game anytime soon, at least not until I bother to test other online games...

Kinda sucks too - the 90s atmosphere, the fashion aspect of the clothing combined with the Hyrule Warriors-esque "grind equippable items to unlock and optimize skills" would've probably convinced me to play online and not care too much about the rated mode and whatnot, but if I'd have to pay over 70$ for only the offline experience... no thanks.

Anyways, if you wanna experiment with weapon combinations, it seems like you unlock a new load-out every level, as well as after every boss in story mode, so it's probably common to find people just grinding levels as soon as they get the game without really trying to improve yet.

I honestly was a bit hesitant in pre-ordering this, since I was only going on the hype I had back when it was shown in E3 and not having seen anything else about it as well as shooters of any kind not being a genre of game I play often. That and my general reluctance in playing any game online with others.

This is definitely a good game though, and I had a ton of fun with online battles. I don't forget that the point of turf wars is to have the most painted ground, but sometimes I just get caught up trying to defeat some opponents when I really shouldn't and end up wasting the rest of the time in the match. If I do focus more on gaining turf for most of the match, then normally I end up covering the most in my team.

I need to do the single-player stuff sometime since I only did the first two missions just to get used to the controls. Unfortunately, I don't have much time to spend on something like this for too long lest I wind up with little sleep the next day. I will definitely try to play more, hopefully with some of you guys at some point.

I finished Single Player with all the scrolls. I'll keep you from spoilers, but I'll say it's very unusual to see such things from Nintendo. Even laughed a bit, but man, what a deep lore.

Final Boss is worth it. If you found the other bosses too easy, likely you'll find the final boss actually pretty difficult, it might take a while, even if you mastered the controls. And you get catchy music.
