I'd like to gather suggestions for simple models I could create. I want to do this to both learn various tools (3ds Max, Mudbox, Photoshop, Quixel Suite, UE4) and to develop a hopefully diverse and impressive portfolio. With any luck, I should end up with a series of models with good texturing (diffuse, AO, normal, specular, emissive) and, if required, a little rigging and animation. I'll be posting both the results and the models for people to freely use or modify as they see fit. Just, y'know, give credit.

It's probably rather obvious and expected, but household objects are a good place to start. The reason being that you have the object right there to reference and photograph. I don't have anything specific to suggest, since I don't know what you have in your home. To give you an idea, the model I chose was a Windex bottle. Even though it is a manufactured item, the ergonomic design of the bottle and the complex trigger mechanism proved to be adequately challenging for me.

To make things more interesting, I'm going to recommend self-imposing the same restriction that my professor did in my 3D modeling class: no video game systems or cartridges. They're manufactured to be sleek and blocky and everyone wants to try them. I'm also going to advise against picking toys and figures, since that defeats the whole purpose of the restriction.

Huh, funny you say that. I'm actually looking for a simple radio model. (You know, household radio, those old square-y kinds with antenna?)

Should not be that hard to make I think. :V

Other than that I guess just follow what Peardian said. Since you usually don't get much simpler than some regular small household objects.

Sounds fun! If you can find me a picture similar to what you're looking for, I'll get started on it.

As for household items, amusingly, the first suggestion in a thread I made elsewhere was for a fridge, so it definitely seems household stuff is the way to start.

Something like this or similar. Detail is not a huge deal, nor is quality.

We have an assignment at the moment to add audio and music to a game project, which is cool. We wanted some diegetic "music" so we have been looking for a 3D model to put in too. :p

If you want to challenge yourself and make a character model there are plenty of character modelling sheets that, when cut apart and set up properly, can more or less become your blueprint throughout the process (you can import images in Maya 2013, not sure about other modelling programs but I'd think it'd work on those too).

So I finally finished Lunaria's model!

Here, have a sizeable image.

It's a very basic radio with only a diffuse map, since it's only to be used as a prop piece. You can grab it here!

If you are interested, I can give you some tutorials I got from school. They might help you start doing some interesting stuff.
